You can keep an outdoor kitchen usable through winter by operating only appliances approved for the conditions and winterizing components that can freeze. In places where freezing temperatures, snow, or ice are possible, make a component-by-component plan: keep a properly maintained grill available if its manual permits, and shut off and drain water-fed equipment according to its installation and manufacturer instructions.
Outdoor-rated does not mean freeze-proof or suitable for operation at every winter temperature. Check the manuals for your exact appliances, and call a qualified professional if you cannot safely drain plumbing, find gas damage, or encounter electrical faults.
Map the Kitchen Before the First Freeze
List the systems in your kitchen and decide whether each will remain in use, be shut down seasonally, or need inspection during winter. A mixed plan is often practical: use the grill while winterizing the sink and ice maker.
| System | Winter decision | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Grill and fuel | May remain in use if the appliance manual permits | Cleanliness, burners, connections, fuel, placement, and snow or ice |
| Sink and water lines | Shut off and drain lines that will not be used through freezing weather | Dedicated shutoff, plumbing layout, drain points, traps, and appliance connections |
| Refrigerator or ice maker | Follow the exact model’s ambient-temperature and winterization instructions | Published operating range, water-line instructions, and restart procedure |
| Outlets, cords, and lighting | Inspect and protect against moisture | Weatherproof covers, GFCI protection, and damage or water intrusion |
| Approach path | Keep clear and lit before cooking | Snow, ice, visibility, and safe access while carrying food or hot cookware |
Shut Off and Drain Water That Could Freeze
Frozen water pipes can burst. University of Minnesota Extension advises shutting off and draining pipes that are not used frequently in winter, especially pipes leading outside. Find the dedicated shutoff before cold weather and confirm which fixtures it controls.

The right drain-down sequence depends on how the kitchen was installed. A sink may have supply lines, a trap, shutoff valves, a drain, filtration, or hot-water connections. Follow the installation and appliance instructions. If plumbing is complex, has backflow equipment or a pump, or cannot be confidently drained, consult a licensed plumber rather than improvising.
Insulation and air sealing can reduce exposure to cold air, but they are supplementary; they do not make it safe to leave water trapped in an unused exterior line. An insulated outdoor faucet cover may add protection for a compatible exposed faucet after the water supply has been shut off and the line drained where required. It is not a guarantee against freezing.
Maintain the Grill and Propane System
Before a long pause in use, clean food and grease from the grill, including its grease-management area, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Weber notes that residue can trap moisture and contribute to corrosion or oxidation. Cover the grill only after it is completely cool. A cover protects against weather and debris, but does not fix a damaged hose, blocked burner, corrosion, or a gas leak.
Before first seasonal use, after storage, and whenever you reconnect a propane cylinder, inspect the connections and perform the leak test recommended by the grill or fuel supplier. A leak-detection solution or thick soapy water can reveal leaks; if bubbles persist after tightening, close the cylinder valve and contact your propane retailer. If you smell gas, suspect a leak, or find damaged or shifted piping, stop. Leave the area if a leak is suspected and call the fuel supplier or a qualified gas professional.

- Turn off the gas at the cylinder after use.
- Keep portable propane cylinders upright and outdoors. Never store or use them in an enclosed space, and do not store spare cylinders under or near the grill.
- Keep snow and ice off exposed regulators, piping, and meters. Clear carefully with a broom rather than striking or loading components with a shovel.
- Never use a fire, heater, or other external heat source to warm a propane cylinder.
Cook Safely in Winter
Use the grill outdoors in the placement and clearance configuration required by its manual. Do not enclose a live fuel-burning grill to create a winter shelter: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns against indoor grill use because of fire and carbon-monoxide hazards.
Before cooking, clear snow and ice from the grill, shelves, and approach path. Use outdoor lighting, wear heat-resistant grilling gloves rather than bulky snow gloves near the hot appliance, and keep the lid closed as much as practical. Cold and wind can lengthen preheating and cooking time; Weber recommends allowing extra time and minimizing lid opening in cold or windy conditions.
Before each use, check the grill and its surroundings for debris, blocked burners or vents, shifted piping, and storm damage. Keep the area around the appliance clear as required by its manual. Do not use it if a connection appears damaged or you suspect a gas leak.
Check Refrigerators and Ice Makers by Model
An outdoor-rated appliance is not automatically suitable for operation in freezing weather. Check the exact model’s published ambient operating range and use-and-care manual; refrigeration equipment does not warm its contents when the surrounding air is below its operating range.

For example, Sub-Zero describes a 60°F–90°F environment for non-outdoor products and lists an approved 50°F–110°F range for its UC-15IO outdoor ice maker. These examples apply to those products, not to every refrigerator or ice maker.
Water-fed appliances also need model-specific winterization. Sub-Zero says that turning off water alone while leaving a unit on is insufficient because residual water can freeze, and directs users to disconnect and drain the ice-maker water line. Scotsman’s manual gives a different detailed procedure for its machine, including draining and disconnecting water; it specifies propylene-glycol RV antifreeze only for applicable pump drains and says automotive antifreeze is not appropriate. Follow your exact manual or use qualified service rather than applying another brand’s procedure.
Protect Outdoor Electrical Equipment
Rain, melting snow, and condensation can affect outdoor outlets and plugged-in equipment. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises using weatherproof covers on outdoor outlets and GFCI protection. Test the GFCI before seasonal use, keep receptacle covers closed when outlets are unused, and do not operate wet or damaged cords or appliances.
Do not bypass a GFCI or rely on an indoor extension cord outdoors. If a GFCI repeatedly trips, water gets into fixed wiring, or you feel a shock, stop using the equipment and call a qualified electrician.

Restart After Storage or Severe Weather
- Inspect the grill, burners, hose, grease system, and cover. Remove debris or animal nesting material before lighting it.
- Check for snow, ice, impact, or other damage to regulators, piping, meters, and ventilation areas. If gas equipment appears damaged, do not use it; contact the fuel supplier or a qualified gas professional.
- Inspect cords, lighting, outlets, and weatherproof covers. Test the GFCI and call an electrician for moisture intrusion, damage, or repeated trips.
- For propane, inspect connections and conduct the recommended leak test before use, including after reconnecting a cylinder.
- Restore water only after winterized lines and appliance connections are correctly reassembled. Follow the appliance’s startup, sanitizing, and filter instructions, and check for leaks.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a licensed plumber if you cannot confidently drain the plumbing, find a burst line, or have complex equipment such as backflow protection or a pump. Call the fuel supplier or a qualified gas professional for a gas smell, suspected leak, or damaged gas equipment. Use a qualified electrician for wet or damaged wiring, repeated GFCI trips, or any shock sensation. For appliances, follow the model’s manual and use its recommended service route.
