A consistently clean-looking home comes from small, repeatable habits: stop dirt at the door, remove routine dust with low-moisture methods, control humidity, dry spills quickly, and use cleaning products exactly as labeled. The 47 tips below are organized so you can adopt them room by room without turning cleaning into an all-day project.
Entryway habits that prevent mess
1. Put a mat at every exterior door
Use a washable or cleanable doormat outside or just inside each entrance to catch soil before it reaches your floors.
2. Make shoes-off entry easy
Place a bench, tray or shoe rack by the door so removing shoes is convenient rather than disruptive.
3. Keep the entry mat clean
Shake, vacuum or wash the mat according to its care label; a saturated mat stops trapping dirt effectively.

4. Create a drop zone
Give keys, bags and mail designated places so they do not spread across counters and tables.
5. Empty the drop zone regularly
Return items to their proper rooms and recycle or file mail before the entryway becomes a second storage area.
6. Sweep the threshold
Remove grit from the strip immediately inside the door before it is carried farther into the house.
7. Check door seals
Replace or repair visibly damaged weatherstripping so drafts do not carry outdoor dust through gaps.
8. Keep a small cleaning cloth nearby
A dedicated cloth lets you wipe fresh fingerprints or tracked moisture before they dry.
Routine cleaning that keeps surfaces presentable
9. Dust hard surfaces with a damp cloth
Damp dusting captures soil instead of simply moving it around. Use clean water or water with detergent for ordinary dirt.
10. Work from high surfaces to low ones
Clean shelves and ledges before lower furniture and floors so falling dust is removed at the end.
11. Vacuum carpets regularly
Use a vacuum suited to the carpet and follow its maintenance instructions.

13. Choose the highest-efficiency compatible vacuum bag or filter
EPA guidance suggests a high-efficiency vacuum or the highest-efficiency compatible filter bag. Do not use a filter that the machine cannot safely accept.
14. Ventilate after vacuuming
Vacuuming can increase airborne dust during and shortly afterward. Allow air to clear, especially if anyone is sensitive to dust.
15. Damp-mop hard floors
Use a well-wrung mop and the floor manufacturer’s approved method; excess water can damage some finishes.

32. Do not cover a recurring damp spot
Paint, caulk or furnishings can hide appearance without correcting the moisture source. Investigate repeated dampness.
33. Keep storage off visibly damp floors
Move boxes and furnishings away from areas with water problems until the source is corrected and materials are dry.
34. Dry bathroom surfaces after use
Wipe excess water from ledges and floors and leave the room arranged so surfaces can dry.
35. Watch for condensation
Regular water droplets on windows, pipes or cold walls indicate moisture that deserves investigation and drying.
Safer, more effective cleaner use
36. Read every product label
Use a cleaner only as directed, including its approved surfaces, dilution and application method.
37. Measure dilution accurately
More concentrate is not automatically better; incorrect dilution can damage finishes and create unnecessary residue.
38. Never mix cleaning products
Keep products separate. In particular, never add bleach to other chemicals.
39. Ventilate while cleaning
Increase ventilation during dilution and use, and continue ventilating afterward when conditions safely allow.

41. Test an unfamiliar product first
Apply it to a small, inconspicuous area and check the surface manufacturer’s guidance before treating a visible section.
42. Store cleaners securely
Keep products in their original labeled containers and store them where children and pets cannot reach them.
Air, ventilation and filtration
43. Reduce pollution at the source
Preventing or limiting a source is EPA’s primary indoor-air approach; do not rely on a filter to compensate for ongoing moisture, smoke or chemical emissions.
44. Bring in clean outdoor air when conditions allow
Use safe ventilation opportunities appropriate to outdoor air quality, weather and the building’s systems.
45. Use portable air cleaners for the room they serve
A portable unit is designed for a single room or area. Select coverage appropriate to that space and follow the equipment instructions.
46. Maintain HVAC filters as specified
Use the filter size and type compatible with your system, and clean or replace it on the schedule in the equipment instructions. There is no universal interval for every home.
47. Treat filtration as a supplement
Portable cleaners and central HVAC filters can reduce some indoor pollution, but neither removes every pollutant. Source control, moisture repair and ventilation remain essential.

Start with the habits that prevent the most visible buildup: entry mats, shoe removal, damp dusting, vacuuming, damp mopping and linen washing. Add a humidity gauge and a weekly moisture inspection if your home has condensation, leaks or musty odors. Keep product labels and surface-care instructions available, and adjust cleaning frequency for household needs; EPA notes that people with allergies or asthma may need to clean more often or more extensively.
