1. Bamboo flooring
Bamboo is worth considering when the project is a floor and the alternative under consideration is hardwood flooring. An EU technical report characterizes bamboo flooring as βvery hard, dimensionally stable and durable.β That supports a flooring discussion; it does not show that bamboo boards can replace framing lumber or beams.
Before choosing a product, check its specifications for the intended room and installation. The cited evidence does not provide comparable current specifications for named products, so it cannot support a brand or model recommendation.

2. Cork flooring
Cork is another flooring category identified alongside bamboo in European Commission material. The evidence establishes its place as a hardwood-flooring alternative, but it does not provide enough current, comparable product details to rank cork against bamboo on durability, moisture performance or maintenance.
For a real project, evaluate the particular flooring product and the conditions where it will be installed rather than assuming all cork floors perform alike.

3. Wood-plastic composite for decks and railings
Natural Resources Canada defines WPC as a non-structural material made from wood residues and recycled plastic. The agency says wood accounts for 30%β65% of finished WPC products by mass; the page does not state a publication date for that figure. In North America, WPC is commonly used for residential decks and railings.
NRCan notes several relevant advantages for exterior use: moisture resistance, dimensional stability, durability outdoors and high resistance to rot. Its trade-offs matter too: colours fade with sun exposure, WPC needs periodic cleaning, and it is not as strong as solid or composite wood products.

Recycled plastic lumber may appear in searches for alternatives to wood, but the evidence here does not establish its performance, appropriate applications or how it compares with WPC. Keep structural wood products in a separate category
Engineered wood is not a non-wood substitute. APA describes engineered wood as strands, veneers, lumber or fiber combined with adhesives for structural applications. Plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), glulam and I-joists are wood-based products; they belong in a discussion of engineered wood, not among non-wood alternatives.
How to choose for a project
- For flooring: Consider bamboo or cork as flooring alternatives, then compare specifications for the actual product and room conditions.
- For a deck or railing: WPC is a non-structural option with documented moisture and rot resistance, but also sunlight fading and periodic cleaning requirements. Verify the productβs intended use and ratings.
- For structural framing: Do not infer structural suitability from flooring or decking claims. Identify the required structural application and use a product specifically specified for it.
- For recycled plastic lumber: Seek product-specific evidence before deciding whether it fits the intended use.
These materials cannot be ranked on one shared performance scale: the available evidence covers different applications and does not provide comparable tests across flooring, decking and structural products.
