For a container that looks full from every angle, choose a spiller whose light and watering needs match the other plants in the pot. Spillers trail over the rim; pair one with a tall thriller and rounded fillers, then choose from these 28 flowering and foliage options by site conditions and the effect you want.

What is a spiller plant?

A spiller is a trailing plant positioned at the front or sides of a container so its stems, leaves, or flowers cascade over the edge. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources defines it simply: “A spiller is a plant that spills over the edge.” In the thriller-filler-spiller approach, the spiller softens the pot’s outline, while a taller plant provides a focal point and fuller plants fill the middle. Choose all three for compatible light and moisture conditions.

28 spiller plants to consider

Use this list as a starting point, not a guarantee that every plant suits every climate or container. Match the plant to your sun exposure, watering routine, desired look, and available room.

Flowering spillers for color

  • Bacopa: Small flowers on a delicate cascade; commonly grown in sun to partial shade.
  • Creeping zinnia: A low, spreading annual with a trailing habit.
  • Cascading lobelia: Fine-textured blue, white, or purple flowers.
  • Million bells (calibrachoa): Abundant small blooms suited to pots and hanging baskets.
  • Moss rose (portulaca): A heat-loving, succulent annual for sunny containers.
  • Nasturtium: Round leaves and edible flowers drape over rims.
  • Spreading verbena: Flowering stems travel across and over the container edge.
  • Wave petunia: Long flowering stems work well in baskets and window boxes.
  • Sweet alyssum: Low, honey-scented flowers soften a container’s edge.
  • Scaevola (fan flower): Heat-tolerant blue or white flowers for sunny spots.
  • Trailing lantana: Flowering stems for hot, bright positions.
  • Trailing begonia: Flowers and foliage for filtered light.
  • Trailing petunia cultivars: A high-color option when regular watering and feeding are practical.
  • Trailing verbena cultivars: Long flowering stems suited to baskets and window boxes.

Foliage spillers for texture and contrast

  • Licorice plant: Silver foliage contrasts with flowers and green leaves.
  • Swedish ivy: A foliage-focused trailer for bright shade or filtered light.
  • Sweet potato vine: Vigorous foliage for warm, sunny containers; give it room so it does not crowd its neighbors.
  • Vinca vine: Glossy leaves and dependable trailing growth.
  • Asparagus fern: A shade-tolerant foliage spiller included in Mississippi State Extension’s shade-container example.
  • Creeping Jenny: Chartreuse or green trailing foliage, often used in partial shade.
  • Creeping wire vine (Muehlenbeckia axillaris ‘Nana’): Compact foliage that can spread widely. UF/IFAS Extension Charlotte County reports a mature height of about 3–4 inches and spread of up to 3 feet.
  • English ivy: A classic evergreen-looking cascade where climate and local growing guidance permit.
  • Trailing tradescantia: Striped or purple foliage for shade containers.
  • Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’: Silver, fan-shaped leaves provide a contrasting cascade.

Trailing plants for sunny, sharply drained pots

  • Trailing rosemary: Aromatic foliage for a sunny container with sharp drainage.
  • Sedum: Succulent texture for sunny containers and a comparatively dry growing approach.
  • String of pearls: Distinctive succulent strands for protected, bright sites.
  • Burro’s tail: Trailing succulent foliage for dry, sunny conditions.

How to choose the right spiller

Start with the light at the container

Observe how much direct sun the pot receives, including afternoon sun, rather than relying only on the garden’s general exposure. Mississippi State Extension’s examples distinguish sweet potato vine for full sun, asparagus fern for full shade, and creeping Jenny for partial shade. Bacopa and Swedish ivy offer options commonly used in sun-to-partial-shade and bright-shade settings, respectively, but check the plant label for the specific cultivar.

Match watering and drainage

Plants sharing a container share the same soil volume and watering schedule. Avoid combining a spiller that prefers consistently moist mix with succulents that need sharply drained conditions. Illinois Extension’s container guidance names bacopa, ivy, sweet potato vine, and calibrachoa as spillers and emphasizes matching light and moisture needs across the planting.

Choose flowers, foliage, or both

For sustained leaf color and texture, consider silver licorice plant or dichondra, glossy vinca vine, or a distinctive succulent. For a floral edge, consider calibrachoa, lobelia, bacopa, scaevola, or verbena. Combining flower and foliage spillers can create contrast, provided their growing requirements align.

Account for vigor and mature spread

A plant that looks modest at planting can overtake a small pot as stems lengthen. Allow room for mature growth, and trim vigorous vines before they shade or crowd the thriller and fillers. Creeping wire vine ‘Nana’ can reach up to 3 feet wide, according to UF/IFAS Extension Charlotte County, so it is better suited to a container with enough space for that spread.

Check how it behaves in your climate

A plant may be an annual, tender perennial, or perennial depending on local winter conditions. The list includes options whose suitability depends on cultivar and climate. Before planting English ivy or another potentially vigorous species, check local hardiness and invasive-plant guidance, as well as whether the plant is available and appropriate for your area.

Planting and care for a container with spillers

  1. Choose a roomy container. Select a pot slightly larger than the combined root balls, with drainage holes. A saucer can catch runoff, but do not let the container sit in standing water.
  2. Use container mix. Fill with a quality potting mix rather than heavy garden soil. Leave about 1 inch of space below the rim so water can be applied without immediately washing over the edge.
  3. Arrange by role and growth habit. Place the thriller as the focal point, fillers around it, and spillers near the front or sides where they can cascade. Keep each plant’s mature size in mind.
  4. Water thoroughly after planting. Water until it exits the drainage holes. Then check the mix and water again when the top 1–2 inches are dry, adjusting for weather, container size, and plant needs.
  5. Feed during the growing season. OSU Extension recommends slow-release fertilizer or worm castings at planting and several times during the season. Follow the product directions for the amount and frequency.
  6. Maintain the shape. Remove spent flowers when appropriate for the plant, and trim vigorous stems before they crowd neighboring plants or block light.
