The examples below show what each one does and what to check before choosing it. They are a discovery guide, not a ranked list: the cited sources describe these products and categories but do not provide controlled, side-by-side performance tests.
Watering and saving water
Start with the job: keeping a container watered, automating a larger garden, or collecting rainwater. Products in this group differ in their need for a reservoir, power or plumbing, and in how much monitoring they offer.
1. POTR Origami self-watering pot
The RHS named the POTR Origami the Sustainable Garden Product of the Year in 2024. It describes POTR Pots as flat-pack, self-watering planters made from waste and designed to fit through a letterbox; the Origami uses recycled plastic and has an in-built watering system. It may suit someone who wants a compact container with a water reserve. Check the pot size and how its watering system fits the plant’s needs. RHS award details.
2. AutoPot reservoir-fed watering
The RHS licensed-products directory describes AutoPot systems as automatically watering plants from a reservoir without electricity. That makes them distinct from app-controlled irrigation: the directory supports the reservoir and no-power details, not smart monitoring. Check reservoir capacity, the number and type of containers supported, and how often the reservoir needs refilling. RHS licensed-products directory.

It is a simple option for an individual pot; check that the spike fits the container and that its water supply suits the plant and conditions. RHS magazine feature.
4. Water butt with an integrated planter
This combination stores rainwater for dry spells while preserving planting space. It may be useful where a separate water butt and planter would be awkward to accommodate. Before buying, check where it can collect rainwater, its capacity, and whether its planting area suits the intended plants. The RHS features the combination in its garden magazine selection.
5. Weather-adjusting smart irrigation
Some AI-backed watering systems track weather and adjust watering schedules, according to the RHS. They may appeal to gardeners who want schedules to respond to conditions rather than rely only on a fixed timer. The RHS gives a broad price range of under £100 to more than £1,000 for smart domestic gardening technology, including watering; this is not a quote for a specific product. Compare power, water connection, capacity, setup, weather response and the level of control offered. RHS discussion of AI and gardening.
Monitoring plants and remembering care
Monitoring gadgets and apps can help make plant conditions or routine jobs more visible. Their readings and reminders are aids, not proof that a plant needs a particular intervention.
6. Soil-monitoring probe
AP describes FloraPod as a probe inserted into soil that sends moisture, humidity, temperature and light-exposure readings to a phone, along with care recommendations. This kind of tool may suit someone who wants to check several growing conditions in one place. Compare which readings a device provides, how it communicates them, and whether its advice is informational or tied to a specific care system. AP’s account is a product description, not an independent test. AP’s smart-gardening feature.

7. Plant-care reminder apps
AP names Planta and Plant Parent as apps that can tailor schedules and send reminders for jobs including watering, fertilizing, pruning and repotting. They may help people who lose track of recurring care tasks. Check which plants and tasks the app covers and whether its current features and pricing fit your needs; app offerings can change. AP’s feature.
8. Camera-based plant identification
The RHS says its Grow app can identify plants using a smartphone camera and provide care tips. It may be a handy starting point when an unfamiliar plant needs identifying, but the RHS description does not establish an accuracy rate. Treat the result as a prompt for further checking rather than a definitive diagnosis. RHS discussion of AI and gardening.
Growing indoors and automating lawn care
Indoor systems package light and watering into a compact growing setup; robot mowers take on a recurring outdoor task. In both cases, practical fit depends on space, setup and ongoing requirements.

9. Soil-less hydroponic indoor garden
AP describes smart indoor gardens that can automate watering, fertilizing and lighting, including soil-less hydroponic systems such as Gardyn and AeroGarden. These may suit people growing herbs or vegetables indoors who want an integrated setup. Compare footprint, plant capacity, lighting, nutrient routines and how the system is controlled; the cited feature does not establish comparative results for the named examples. AP’s feature.
10. Pod-based indoor garden using growing media
Not every “smart garden” is hydroponic. AP distinguishes Click & Grow’s pods, which contain traditional growing media, from soil-less systems. A pod-based format may simplify planting, but check the availability and cost of replacement pods, the plants supported, lighting needs and any app dependence. These are comparison questions, not test findings. AP’s feature.

Some garden products stand out because of their material or design. The RHS descriptions below come from its 2024 sustainable-product competition; they establish what was featured or recognized, not broader life-cycle performance.
16. twool renewable British-wool garden net
The RHS highly commended twool’s renewable British-wool garden net as a biodegradable alternative to plastic netting. It may interest gardeners looking for a non-plastic netting option. Check that its intended use and physical properties suit the plants and protection needed; the award description does not quantify durability or environmental impact across its life cycle. RHS 2024 competition details.
17. Hannah Marchant plantable calendar
Hannah Marchant’s calendar embeds seeds in paper, according to the RHS’s 2024 finalist description. It combines a calendar with a planting opportunity. Check which seeds are included and whether their growing requirements suit your space and conditions. RHS 2024 competition details.
18. Sneeboer handspade made using renewable energy
The RHS described Sneeboer’s handspade as made using renewable energy in its 2024 sustainable-product competition. The RHS licensed-products directory also points to useful categories beyond connected gadgets. Licensing identifies products associated with RHS partners; it is not a performance ranking.
19. VegTrug space-saving raised planter
The RHS directory names VegTrug for space-saving raised planters. A raised planter may make productive use of a limited footprint; check its dimensions, growing depth and placement against the plants and available space you have. RHS licensed-products directory.
20. Melcourt peat-free growing products
The RHS directory lists Melcourt peat-free growing products. This category may suit gardeners seeking growing products described as peat-free. Check the exact product and its stated uses before buying, since the directory entry does not compare formulations or growing results. RHS licensed-products directory.
How to choose an innovation that will actually help
Choose the problem before choosing the gadget. A smart feature adds little if it creates more setup or maintenance than the task warrants. Annette Giardina, Avanade’s Chief Innovation and Sustainability Officer, puts the test simply: “AI which adds benefit, not AI for AI’s sake.” The RHS interview.
- For watering: check whether the system needs a reservoir, hose or electricity; how much water it holds or delivers; how it is set up; how often it needs refilling; and whether you want a fixed schedule or weather response.
- For monitoring: identify the readings provided, how they reach you, and whether recommendations are informational rather than a guarantee of plant health.
- For indoor growing: compare the growing method, footprint, light, plant capacity, nutrient or refill routine, replacement pod availability and app dependence.
- For mowing: check the individual mower’s setup and suitability for your garden rather than assuming all robotic models work the same way.
- For hand tools: match the task, reach and adjustability to your garden, storage space and physical needs.
These examples span low-tech water-saving products, connected monitoring, automated growing and lawn care. The RHS and AP descriptions are useful starting points, but neither source establishes a controlled head-to-head comparison or proves that a particular gadget will save money, water or time in every garden.
