You can make a cylindrical wooden enclosure by gluing thin wood plies around a rigid form, then trimming the cured shell and fitting a base and lid. This bent-lamination approach is a practical general method for curved walls; the right dimensions, stock, joinery and finish still depend on what the enclosure will hold and how it will be used.
1. Define the enclosure before choosing materials
Decide what the enclosure needs to contain and establish its finished inside diameter and height. Also determine whether it needs a lid, whether it will face moisture, and whether it must carry a load. Those answers affect wall thickness, base and lid construction, joinery and finish. No single size or load rating applies to every cylindrical enclosure.
2. Choose how to make the curved wall
For a controllable, repeatable curved wall, bent lamination is a useful starting method: thin plies are glued together around a form. Steam bending is another option when you want continuous grain around the curve, but its feasibility depends on the wood species, stock and bend radius.
| Consideration | Bent lamination | Steam bending |
|---|---|---|
| How the curve is made | Thin plies are glued together around a form. Fine Woodworking | Heat and moisture soften a solid piece of wood, which is bent on a form. WOOD Magazine |
| Control and repeatability | A form, prepared stock, adhesive and evenly applied pressure help control the result; it also suits repeat pieces made on the same form. Fine Woodworking | Success depends on suitable stock and handling the wood quickly after steaming. This Old House |
| Grain appearance | The wall has glue lines between plies; choose the outer ply for the visible face. Fine Woodworking | The grain can follow the curve continuously. WOOD Magazine |
| Equipment and hazards | Requires a form, adhesive, cauls and clamps; it does not require a steam setup. Fine Woodworking | Requires a steam source or box and a bending form. Steam is a burn hazard, and the box must be vented rather than sealed. Woodworkers Institute |
The steps below focus on bent lamination. If continuous grain is essential, first confirm that your chosen stock and radius are suitable for steam bending, then consult detailed guidance for a properly vented steam setup.

3. Draw the cylinder full size
Mark the intended finished diameter and height on a full-size drawing. Account for the entire bending package—not just the wood wall. The plies, adhesive layers and any release liner between the work and form all affect the curve and resulting dimensions. Use the finished shell, rather than the form alone, as the reference for later fitting.
4. Choose and prepare consistent plies
Use straight, sound stock or suitable veneer, prepared so the plies are consistent in thickness and width. Fine Woodworking offers 1/8 to 3/16 inch as a starting thickness for a test laminate, not as a universal specification. Thinner plies may be needed for a tight curve or stock that resists bending. Fine Woodworking’s bent-lamination guidance discusses test thickness and preparation.

- NON-MARRING PADS: Grip firmly and protect your workpiece from scratches and scuffs
- QUICK-GRIP DESIGN: One-handed triggers release the clamps instantly
- STURDY: Resin construction with hardened steel bars to prevent flexing and bending
- 140LBS of force: Keep your workpiece together and evenly distribute 150LBS. of force
- EASY-TO-USE: Ideal for clamping smaller workpieces and working in confined areas
5. Test the bend on the intended radius
Before preparing the full set of plies, test the selected wood and thickness on the planned radius. Check whether the stock bends without cracking and whether the layers can be brought together on the form. If the test resists the curve, adjust the ply thickness or reconsider the stock and method.
6. Make a rigid, accurate form
Build the form to match the cylinder geometry and stiff enough to withstand the clamping force without shifting. Plywood, MDF and particleboard are among the sheet materials discussed in bent-lamination form guidance. Lay out the form with the laminate and any liner thickness in mind so the finished wall reaches the intended curve.

7. Arrange clamps, cauls and a release layer
Plan clamp positions and prepare cauls before applying adhesive. Arrange them to spread pressure around the curve rather than concentrating it at a few points. Where needed, add a suitable release layer between the laminate and form so squeeze-out does not bond the shell to the form. Fine Woodworking’s tray project covers liner and release considerations. Read the project guidance.
8. Dry-fit the plies
Stack the prepared plies on the form and rehearse the clamping sequence without glue. Confirm that the stack can be brought into position, the cauls sit as intended and the clamps are within reach. Accurate stock and even pressure help the layers conform together instead of slipping or leaving gaps.

9. Apply adhesive and clamp the stack
Choose an adhesive suited to the intended exposure and follow its manufacturer’s directions for application and assembly. There is no universal adhesive choice or spread rate for every enclosure. Bring the plies together on the form, then tighten clamps progressively so pressure is distributed along the curve. Bent-lamination guidance emphasizes controlled pressure and prepared stock; a tray project provides an example of the process without establishing a one-size-fits-all glue specification. Fine Woodworking.

Leave the laminate clamped for the adhesive’s specified cure period, taking its directions and shop conditions into account. A Fine Woodworking tray project describes leaving a workpiece clamped overnight and longer in a cold shop, but that is a project-specific example, not a general cure time for this enclosure. See the project example.

11. Release, inspect and trim the shell
After the adhesive has cured as directed, remove the clamps and release the shell from the form. Inspect the wall for visible gaps and unwanted springback, then trim the ends square and true the edges. The amount of cleanup needed depends on the work; no enclosure dimensions are specified here.
12. Fit the base and lid to the finished wall
Use the trimmed shell to size the base and, if needed, the lid. Choose joinery that suits the wall material, diameter and intended use. The appropriate joint and its capacity cannot be specified without those project details. Likewise, a lid or joint should not be treated as weatherproof unless its design and materials support that use.
13. Sand and finish for the intended use
Prepare the inside and outside surfaces, then select a finish compatible with the enclosure’s contents and expected exposure. Do not assume that a finish is food-safe, water-resistant or structurally protective without product-specific information supporting that claim.
If you choose steam bending instead
Steam bending softens solid wood with heat and moisture before the piece is bent around a form. It can preserve continuous grain, but suitable stock and a workable radius are essential, and handling must be quick after steaming. A steam box needs an open path for steam to escape: do not seal it or operate it as a pressure vessel. Steam can cause severe burns. Woodworkers Institute advises wearing thick leather gloves, attending the steamer and allowing steam to escape. Woodworkers Institute steam-box guidance.
