The useful approach is to match the tape to the job, the surface, and the conditions it will face. Painter’s tape, general masking tape, duct tape, electrical tape, packing tape, double-sided mounting tape, HVAC foil tape, and PTFE thread-seal tape each have distinct uses; a few other categories may be worth keeping if your projects call for them.
Before buying, check the product label for compatible surfaces, bond strength, heat and moisture limits, UV exposure, and removal guidance. Tape performance varies by product, so do not assume one roll can substitute for another. Lowe’s tape buying guide outlines these selection considerations.
Which tape should you reach for?

The last three are conditional additions, not universal household essentials. Their performance depends on the exact product and application; follow its instructions rather than assuming that all tapes in a category behave alike.
Masking tape for paint and general jobs
Painter’s tape
Painter’s tape is designed for masking during painting, with lower tack than many general masking tapes and grades intended for different surface conditions. Choose a grade suited to the surface and follow the roll’s removal window. A clean-removal claim is not a guarantee for every finish: surface condition, paint cure, sunlight, and time in place can affect results. Test a discreet area first on a sensitive finish. Pro Tapes’ building and construction applications describes painter’s tape grades and clean-removal uses; Lowe’s also distinguishes painter’s tape from general masking tape in its buying guide.

General-purpose masking tape
General masking tape is a broader-purpose option for masking and temporary holding. It is not automatically the right choice for a clean paint edge or a delicate surface. Match the adhesive and removal guidance to the job instead of choosing by the word “masking” alone.
Tape for repairs, electrical work, and packages
General-purpose duct tape
General-purpose duct tape can help with light-duty repairs, bundling, and holding. For example, 3M describes its DT8 product as having a cloth scrim and conformable backing for those kinds of tasks. That product description does not make ordinary duct tape a permanent repair material or an HVAC duct-sealing product. See 3M All Purpose Duct Tape DT8.

Electrical tape
Keep electrical tape only for work its rating and instructions cover. Check that the specific roll is suitable for the electrical application; tape alone should not be treated as a substitute for an approved repair method. Electrical tapes are a distinct product category in the Electro Tape product library, but that category label is not a safety specification.
Packing tape
Packing tape is made for closing cartons. Lowe’s describes it as water-resistant, not fully waterproof, so do not rely on it to protect a package from sustained water exposure. See the Lowe’s tape buying guide.

Mounting and building-system tapes
Double-sided mounting tape
Double-sided mounting tape bonds two surfaces without a visible strip on top. Check the maker’s instructions for compatible materials, surface preparation, supported load, and whether the bond is intended to be removable. “Mounting tape” is not a universal load rating. Double-coated products are listed as a distinct category by Electro Tape.
HVAC foil tape
Use a foil tape specified for the duct material and the application, rather than substituting general-purpose duct tape. For example, 3M identifies Foil Tape 3340 for HVAC duct closure and vapor-seal uses and lists UL 181A-P and UL 181B-FX. The same product page specifies an operating range of -40°F (-40°C) to 300°F (149°C); that range applies to 3340, not to foil tapes generally. Check both the tape listing and duct material for your job. 3M Foil Tape 3340.

PTFE thread-seal tape
PTFE thread-seal tape is for compatible threaded pipe connections, not for wrapping unrelated leaks. Oatey offers thread-seal tapes for threaded pipes, valves, and fittings carrying different fluids and gases, and specifically recommends yellow gas-line PTFE tape for natural gas installations. Check the tape’s service compatibility, follow its instructions, and comply with applicable local requirements. Do not infer that any color or grade is suitable for every service. Carpet or floor tape
Consider a carpet or floor tape only when the product instructions name your flooring or intended use. Test first if removal could affect a finish; products in this broad category can differ in adhesion and removability.

Anti-slip safety tape
For an anti-slip application, use a product whose label and installation directions match the surface and exposure. Do not treat the category name alone as evidence of suitability for a particular step, floor, or outdoor condition.
Weather-sealing or repair tape
Choose weather-exposed repair tape only when the product documentation covers the substrate and the expected moisture, UV, and temperature conditions. A tape that sticks indoors may not be suitable outdoors.
How to choose a roll before you buy
- Name the job. Decide whether you are masking paint, bundling, closing a carton, mounting, sealing ductwork, or sealing threaded pipe. Start with a product designed for that task.
- Identify the surface. Check the tape maker’s compatible substrates and any surface-preparation requirements. Test a discreet spot when the finish is sensitive or removal matters.
- Check exposure and bond. Compare the product’s stated heat, moisture, and UV limits with the job conditions, and make sure its intended holding strength is appropriate.
- Plan for removal or permanence. Read the removal window and permanence guidance. A tape suitable for temporary masking may not be suitable for a lasting bond, and vice versa.
- Verify special requirements. For HVAC or pipe work, check the product listing, material compatibility, and service instructions rather than relying on a general category name.
- Buy the practical size. Compare width and roll length against the job; do not trade away a required rating or compatibility just to get a larger roll.
Tape categories are not interchangeable. 3M’s masking and duct tape overview and the Electro Tape catalog show how manufacturers group products by application, while the product-specific instructions determine whether an individual roll suits a particular task.
