The $599 device clips onto many existing toilet bowls, uses optical sensing and spectroscopy to analyze bathroom-related signals, and sends trend information to the Kohler Health app. A membership is also required, and the current app listing identifies the service as iPhone-only.
That makes Dekoda an intriguing premium experiment in passive wellness tracking, but not a medical diagnostic device. Its value depends on whether long-term bathroom data justifies the hardware cost, recurring subscription, privacy trade-offs, and installation limitations.

What Kohler Dekoda actually is
Dekoda is a compact sensor that attaches to the rim of an existing toilet with an adjustable clamp. Kohler says the clamp fits most toilet bowls and installs without tools. The unit is rechargeable and can be removed magnetically for charging.

In construction terms, it is a connected bathroom accessory rather than a new plumbing fixture. You keep your existing toilet; Dekoda adds sensing hardware to the bowl. It does not provide the features people usually associate with an intelligent toilet, such as a heated seat, bidet wash, automatic lid, deodorization, lighting, or app-controlled flushing. Kohler’s conventional smart toilets are a separate product category.

The product was reported at a $599 launch price, with shipments beginning October 21, 2025. Kohler’s official page confirms that a membership is required, although current membership pricing should be checked at checkout.
How a bathroom visit works
- Install the device: Attach Dekoda to the toilet rim using its adjustable clamp.
- Identify the user: Authenticate with a fingerprint scan or through the Kohler Health app. Kohler also depicts a wall-mounted fingerprint remote, but available product information does not clearly establish whether that accessory is included with the $599 package.
- Use the toilet normally: During an authenticated session, the device analyzes waste and related signals from inside the bowl.
- Review the result: Results, scores, baselines, and trends appear in the Kohler Health app.
Authentication is intended to keep household members’ results separate. In a shared bathroom, however, attribution depends on people consistently identifying themselves. A guest, child, or household member who skips authentication could create an incorrectly assigned session.
What Dekoda claims to measure
Kohler describes Dekoda as tracking patterns rather than delivering laboratory results. Its advertised outputs include:
| Advertised output | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|
| Stool frequency | A record of bathroom habits that may reveal changes over time. |
| Consistency and shape | Automated stool classification, including categories associated with the Bristol Stool Chart. |
| Hydration | An inferred wellness signal—not a blood test, urine test, or laboratory measurement of body chemistry. |
| Gut health | A pattern-oriented score, not a clinical assessment of the microbiome or digestive disease. |
| Possible blood presence | An alert that requires medical interpretation; it does not confirm gastrointestinal bleeding. |
| Personal trends | Baselines, timelines, frequency charts, time-of-day patterns, and other historical comparisons. |
Kohler and launch coverage describe optical sensing, computer vision, AI, spectroscopy, and a four-camera optical array. Those are descriptions of the system’s design and advertised capabilities—not independent proof that every measurement is clinically accurate.
The app listing describes Gut Health and Hydration scores, session results, personal baselines, six-week and yearly trend views, frequency charts, time-of-day patterns, and filters for reviewing past results. Later app updates added features such as stool color and amount measurements. The current listing identifies the app as available for iPhone and lists Kohler Ventures as the developer; Android support should not be assumed.
Is Dekoda a medical device?
No, according to the app’s own disclaimer. The Kohler Health app describes Dekoda as a general-wellness product and says it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease or medical conditions.

- Interior dimensions: 17-1/4"W x 13"D
- Vitreous china.
- No faucet holes; requires wall-or counter-mount faucet.
- Undermount.
That distinction matters:
- A blood-presence alert is not a diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding.
- A hydration score is not a clinical hydration test.
- A gut-health score is not a diagnosis of digestive disease or a measurement of the microbiome.
- A normal result cannot rule out illness.
- Stool changes can have harmless explanations, including food, supplements, medication, or temporary illness.
Anyone with persistent bowel changes, visible blood, severe pain, unexplained weight loss, or other concerning symptoms should seek qualified medical advice. Dekoda may help a person notice a pattern, but it should not replace a clinician, laboratory testing, or an appropriate screening program.
The real cost of ownership
The headline price is only the starting point. Dekoda requires an ongoing Kohler Health membership.
Launch coverage reported membership pricing of approximately $6.99 to $12.99 per month, or about $70 to $156 per year, depending on the plan. These figures should be treated as reported historical pricing rather than a guarantee of current checkout totals.
Using the reported $599 hardware price, the approximate cost would be:
| Ownership period | Lower reported annual plan | Higher reported annual plan |
|---|---|---|
| First year | $669 | $755 |
| Three years | $809 | $1,067 |
These calculations exclude tax, shipping, accessories, discounts, and any changed membership tiers. Before buying, confirm the current hardware price, membership terms, cancellation policy, and what—if anything—continues to work after cancellation.

Kohler presents Dekoda as privacy-conscious. The sensors point downward into the bowl rather than toward the user, and the company describes authenticated sessions, encryption, and fingerprint-based access.

- Compact, streamlined one-piece smart bidet toilet with integrated personal cleansing. Elongated bowl offers added room and comfort
- Comfort Height feature with chair-height seating that makes sitting down and standing up easier for most adults. The electric toilet has dual flush offers a choice of 0.8 or 1.0 gpf (3.0 or 3.8 lpf)
- Stainless steel wand offers adjustable spray shape, position, water pressure, temperature, pulsate, and oscillate functions. Front and rear wash modes provide warm water for cleansing
- Self-cleaning function uses UV light and electrolyzed water systems to automatically clean the wand surfaces. Motion-activated, hands-free opening/closing of seat and cover
- Quiet-Close lid and seat prevents slamming. Bowl is automatically misted prior to use for more effective rinsing while flushing
Those measures may reduce exposure, but “encrypted” does not mean Kohler cannot access the data. The important privacy questions are more specific:
- Are raw images stored, and for how long?
- Are images deleted after analysis?
- Which derived measurements and scores are retained?
- Are data used to improve products or train models?
- Can users export or permanently delete raw and derived data separately?
- What happens to data after a subscription ends?
- What information is shared with service providers?
- How are sessions handled when a user forgets to authenticate?
The product and app pages do not answer all of those questions. Read Kohler Health’s current privacy policy and terms before purchase. Apple also notes that app privacy disclosures are supplied by the developer and are not verified by Apple.
Will it fit your existing toilet?
Kohler’s “most toilet bowls” language is useful but is not a guarantee of universal compatibility. Check the manufacturer’s current installation documentation before ordering, particularly if your bathroom has:
- An unusually narrow, thick, curved, or irregular rim.
- A wall-mounted or compact toilet.
- A bidet seat or integrated smart toilet with little exposed rim space.
- Seat hinges or bumpers that interfere with the clamp.
- Unusual bowl geometry that could affect sensor positioning.
Also consider whether the device could be knocked loose by a user’s leg, the toilet seat, cleaning tools, or routine maintenance. For remodeling projects, Dekoda should be evaluated as an add-on accessory, not as a reason to replace a functioning toilet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Daily ownership and practical drawbacks
Dekoda operates in a wet, dirty environment where cleaning chemicals, water conditions, lighting, bowl shape, and waste position may affect sensing. Kohler’s current care instructions should be followed rather than assuming ordinary bathroom cleaners are safe.
Other foreseeable friction points include regular charging, app and connectivity requirements, inconsistent use, multiple users, guests, children, and changing scores or labels after software updates. A household may need frequent use over an extended period before trend data becomes useful. If the membership is canceled, the hardware could retain limited value depending on what local functionality Kohler supports.

- Silent Fill Technology: Provides a gracious experience by filling the tank quietly
- Adjustable with Multiple Fill-rate Inserts: Are provided to optimize performance and conserve water
- Compatibility: Compatible with Kohler Class 5 toilets; confirm shank color to determine correct part; If grey, use this part and if black, use GP1083167
- Please note: Cap color may vary. Never use an abrasive material such as a brush or scouring pad to clean surfaces
Accessibility also deserves attention. Buyers who cannot use fingerprint authentication should confirm whether app login or another supported method works reliably for their household.

Who should buy Dekoda?
Dekoda may make sense for someone who:
- Wants passive, long-term tracking rather than manual journaling.
- Uses an iPhone or confirms current platform support before purchase.
- Has a likely-compatible toilet rim.
- Will use authentication consistently in a shared bathroom.
- Accepts a recurring membership and connected-service risks.
- Is comfortable with intimate bathroom data being processed by a commercial service.
- Understands that results are wellness indicators, not diagnoses.
It is probably a poor fit for someone seeking a one-time medical test, a clinical diagnosis, bidet or heated-seat features, subscription-free ownership, or maximum privacy. It is also a weak purchase for an Android-only household unless Kohler has since released confirmed Android support.
Alternatives to consider
Manual tracking
A symptom or bowel-movement diary is less convenient, but it avoids the $599 hardware purchase, subscription, camera, and connected-service data concerns. For many people, consistent notes plus a conversation with a primary-care professional may be more actionable.
Throne
Throne is a competing toilet-monitoring product. Homes.com reported historical figures of roughly $400 for hardware and $6 per month for membership, but current pricing, compatibility, supported phones, authentication, and privacy terms should be verified directly with the vendor.
Withings U-Scan
Withings U-Scan is an adjacent bathroom-health product focused on urine analysis rather than Dekoda’s stool-focused monitoring. It is not a direct substitute, so check regional availability, supported tests, and current pricing before comparing them.
Conventional Kohler smart toilets
Kohler intelligent toilets are designed around bidet washing, heated seats, flushing, lighting, and other comfort features. They are a separate purchase category and should not be expected to provide Dekoda’s health-tracking functions.
Bottom-line buying verdict
Dekoda is best understood as a subscription-based household sensor that turns repeated observations of stool and bathroom behavior into personal trend data. It is not a smart toilet in the usual construction-and-fixtures sense, and it is not a medical analyzer.
For an iPhone-owning buyer with a compatible toilet, a strong interest in passive tracking, and a willingness to pay for years of data, Dekoda could be worthwhile. For everyone else, the $599 hardware, required membership, unresolved data-retention questions, platform limitation, and lack of established independent clinical validation make it an expensive novelty rather than an essential bathroom upgrade.
