The most effective way to increase home security is to combine physical protection, visibility, detection, secure technology, and a practiced response plan. Start with the weaknesses a camera cannot fix: unlocked or poorly fitted doors, vulnerable windows, concealed approaches, unsecured garages, and access codes or keys that no longer need to work.

Work through the home in layers: deter unwanted activity, delay forced entry, detect opening or movement, respond quickly and safely, and protect the privacy and reliability of the systems you install.

1. Audit the property before buying equipment

Walk around the home during daylight and after dark. Inspect every possible approach, not just the front door:

  • Front, side, rear, basement and garage-entry doors.
  • Ground-floor windows, sliding glass doors and windows hidden by landscaping.
  • Doors with glass panels, mail slots or pet doors near the lock.
  • Garages, sheds, workshops, gates and side passages.
  • Balconies, roofs or other elevated access points where applicable.
  • Shared entrances, package rooms, parking areas and hallways in apartments or condos.

For each opening, ask: Can it be forced? Can the lock or frame be bypassed? Is it visible from the street or a neighbor? Can someone work on it without being seen? Will anyone know if it opens? Is it routinely left unlocked?

Tapo 1080P Indoor Security Camera, Baby Monitor, Dog Camera, Wired, C100
  • ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
  • EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
  • PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
  • VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
  • FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.

Rank each weakness:

  • High risk: accessible, concealed, weak or routinely unsecured.
  • Medium risk: partly protected but lacking good visibility or detection.
  • Lower risk: strongly secured, visible and monitored.

Fix high-risk physical weaknesses before adding more devices. CISA’s personal security guidance similarly emphasizes doors, windows, lighting, landscaping, tools and cameras as parts of a broader protection plan.

2. Secure doors and frames first

A strong lock is less useful if the door, frame or strike area fails. For exterior doors:

  • Use a quality deadbolt rather than relying only on a spring-latch lock.
  • Inspect the frame for cracks, looseness and poor anchoring.
  • Reinforce the strike area with appropriate longer screws that reach structural framing where suitable.
  • Consider a reinforced frame or security strike for a vulnerable entry.
  • Secure exposed hinges or use security hinges when hinges are outside.
  • Add a door viewer, video doorbell or another way to identify visitors before opening.

Re-key or replace locks after moving in, losing keys or ending a relationship with someone who had access. Change electronic codes when they have been shared or exposed, and remove former residents, contractors and guests from smart-home accounts. Do not hide spare keys in predictable locations or leave entry codes where visitors can see them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat the garage-to-house door as an exterior entry. Keep it locked, inspect its frame and hardware, and avoid leaving garage remotes in vehicles parked outside. Check that garage windows and emergency-release mechanisms cannot be easily exploited.

Are smart locks safer?

Not automatically. A smart lock may improve convenience, temporary-code management and access records, but it adds batteries, an app account, firmware and potentially remote access. Before choosing one, check whether it has a mechanical override, what happens when batteries die or the internet fails, whether codes can be revoked, whether the account supports multifactor authentication, and whether administrator privileges can be limited.

3. Protect windows and sliding doors without blocking escape

  • Repair or replace defective window locks.
  • Use secondary stops where appropriate.
  • Use a dowel or security bar for a sliding door, together with an anti-lift measure where suitable.
  • Consider security film as a delay and glass-retention measure, not an impenetrable barrier.
  • Keep climbable objects away from windows.
  • Use door and window sensors where a physical opening would otherwise go unnoticed.
  • Use curtains or blinds to reduce views of valuables and private rooms.

Do not permanently block a bedroom window or other required exit. Security bars and stops must have a safe, readily operable release where required, and all work should comply with local fire, building and accessibility requirements.

  • Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).

4. Improve lighting, landscaping and sightlines

Good visibility makes approaches and concealment areas easier to observe and gives cameras a better image. Prioritize front and back doors, side passages, garages, driveways, steps, gates, sheds and basement windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Trim shrubs around doors and windows so a person cannot easily hide behind them.
  • Maintain clear sightlines from the home toward the street and neighboring properties.
  • Secure ladders, tools, bricks, stones and other objects that could assist entry or cause damage.
  • Lock sheds, garages and gates.
  • Be cautious with tall opaque fencing that creates concealment, unless privacy or another safety need justifies it.

Motion lighting can draw attention to activity but may trigger from pets, wildlife or weather. Dusk-to-dawn lighting provides consistent visibility but uses more energy. Aim lights carefully: glare can reduce camera quality, and lights should not unnecessarily shine into neighbors’ windows or public spaces.

5. Add alarms, sensors and cameras strategically

More equipment is not automatically more security. Every added device brings batteries, maintenance, alerts, accounts and privacy decisions. Cover a specific weakness instead of buying a maximum number of devices.

Entry sensors and alarms

Door and window contact sensors can notify you when an opening changes state, including openings a camera cannot continuously monitor. Motion sensors, glass-break sensors and audible alarms can add detection, but placement, sensitivity, pets, loose doors and low batteries affect reliability.

Alarm options include:

  • Local alarm: sounds at the property but may not notify anyone remotely.
  • Self-monitored system: sends alerts to you or designated contacts.
  • Professionally monitored system: routes signals to a monitoring center.
  • Integrated system: combines intrusion sensors with cameras, smoke, carbon monoxide, water or medical alerts.

Monitoring does not guarantee police or fire response. Ask how signals are handled, who is contacted first, how false alarms are managed, and what local registration or dispatch rules apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When cameras help

Cameras can provide live views, verify visitors, document package delivery, alert you to activity and preserve evidence. They can also be obstructed, disabled, stolen, disconnected, aimed incorrectly or defeated by poor lighting. The U.S. Department of Justice describes CCTV as a deterrence and investigative aid, not a replacement for target hardening or alarms; see its burglary-prevention material.

Place cameras according to the property’s likely approach routes:

  • Point the main-door camera toward faces and the approach, not only the top of a visitor’s head.
  • Cover side gates, driveways, garages and rear approaches when those are vulnerable.
  • Test daylight, night, rain, glare, moving foliage and Wi-Fi performance.
  • Do not assume a wide-angle camera covers every direction.
  • Avoid indoor cameras in bedrooms, bathrooms and other sensitive areas.

A visible camera may deter opportunistic activity, while a less conspicuous camera may be harder to disable. A layered setup can use both, but neither guarantees prevention.

6. Secure the smart home and camera accounts

A connected camera, lock or alarm can expand the ways a home is exposed. Use this checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Change default usernames and passwords.
  2. Use a long, unique password for every security account.
  3. Enable multifactor authentication where available.
  4. Install firmware, app and router updates promptly.
  5. Use encrypted connections and HTTPS where supported.
  6. Secure the router with a unique administrator password and current firmware.
  7. Use WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi security.
  8. Consider a separate guest or IoT network for cameras and other smart devices.
  9. Disable remote access and unused features.
  10. Review account permissions, shared links and access logs.
  11. Remove former household members and suspicious integrations.
  12. Set recording retention and deletion rules deliberately.
  13. Use physical privacy shutters or covers for indoor cameras where possible.

The FTC’s camera guidance and its advice on home Wi-Fi cover passwords, MFA, updates, encryption, network security, remote viewing and account access.

7. Choose the right approach for your household

Household Practical starting point Important trade-off
Renter Ask about re-keying; use removable door reinforcement, portable alarms and no-drill cameras where permitted. Lease, building, fire-egress and privacy rules limit permanent changes.
Budget-conscious homeowner Harden doors, secure windows, improve lighting and add targeted sensors before buying multiple cameras. Self-monitoring shifts maintenance and emergency decisions to the household.
Frequent traveler Use sensors and cameras, MFA, backup power and a trusted local contact; arrange mail, packages, lawn care and snow removal. Connected automation must not expose occupancy patterns through insecure accounts.
Pet owner Use carefully placed sensors and pet-appropriate motion detection where suitable. Pets and wildlife can create false alarms.
Privacy-sensitive household Favor local storage, physical shutters, granular permissions and minimal cloud dependence. Local systems require protection of the recorder and a plan for theft or hardware failure.
Large, rural or complex property Consider a site assessment, multiple approach zones, cellular backup and professionally monitored alarms. Installation, maintenance, contracts and monthly costs may be higher.

DIY or professional installation?

DIY systems suit renters, smaller homes and people comfortable configuring apps, batteries and networks. Professional installation or monitoring may suit complex homes, households wanting 24/7 monitoring, or anyone needing integrated fire, medical, water, battery and cellular backup. Compare total equipment, installation, activation and monthly costs—not just an advertised introductory price.

8. Plan for outages, false alarms and emergencies

Before choosing an alarm or smart lock, ask what happens during an internet or power failure:

  • Can cameras record locally?
  • Does the lock work offline and have a mechanical key?
  • Will alerts resume after reconnection?

Test notifications repeatedly, improve network coverage if needed, enable priority alerts, and replace batteries before failure. For false alarms, adjust sensor placement or sensitivity, use pet-appropriate equipment where suitable, establish a household disarm procedure, and understand local registration and false-alarm rules.

Create and practice a household emergency plan. Decide where occupants go during a break-in or fire, who receives alerts, how children, older adults, disabled residents and pets are handled, and which trusted contacts can access the home.

If a smart-home account is compromised

  1. Change the password from a trusted device.
  2. Revoke unknown sessions and users.
  3. Enable MFA.
  4. Change reused passwords elsewhere.
  5. Review access logs, shared links and integrations.
  6. Update firmware and apps; reset the device if unauthorized access continues.
  7. Contact the vendor and preserve relevant logs.

If you suspect a break-in

Do not enter if the property may still be unsafe. Move to a secure location and contact emergency services. Once authorities clear the property, photograph damage, preserve video and device logs, notify your insurer, and re-key or replace compromised locks. Change physical codes, digital credentials and access permissions without wiping evidence first.

9. Avoid bad contracts and home-security scams

When comparing a security company, slow down—especially after an unsolicited door-to-door visit. Verify the business and licensing, obtain written estimates, and ask:

  • What is the complete equipment, installation and monitoring cost?
  • Is there a contract, automatic renewal or cancellation fee?
  • Who installs, monitors and repairs the system?
  • Are subcontractors involved?
  • What happens during a power or internet outage?
  • Who owns the equipment after cancellation?
  • Can it move to another home?
  • What warranty and replacement terms apply?
  • Are local alarm registration, police, fire or false-alarm fees charged?
  • Which features continue without a subscription?

The FTC warns that “free” equipment can be tied to expensive long-term monitoring and recommends researching the company and reading the complete written contract.
