To use a Roborock robot vacuum’s mopping function, vacuum loose dirt first, fill the correct tank with cold water, dampen and wring the mop cloth, install the mop assembly, choose Mop or Vac&Mop in the Roborock app, protect carpets, and wash and dry the mop system afterward.
The exact procedure depends on the model. Older S5 and S6 units use a removable tank-and-cloth module, while S7 and S8 models may lift a vibrating mop and Qrevo models commonly use rotating pads with a self-cleaning dock. Confirm your model in the Roborock tutorials library before installing parts or changing settings.

Before you start
Roborock’s mopping systems are intended mainly for maintenance cleaning on suitable hard floors. They are not a substitute for manually treating dried spills, heavy grease, grout, or large amounts of wet debris.
- Confirm that your model supports mopping. Not every Roborock vacuum has the same tank, cloth, mop plate, pad, or dock.
- Remove obstacles. Pick up cables, toys, clothing, pet waste, valuables, and anything that could be dragged under the robot.
- Vacuum first. Dust, sand, and crumbs can turn into wet grime when mopped. For some Q-series models, Roborock recommends vacuuming the floor at least three times before the first mopping run. This is a model-specific recommendation, not a universal requirement for every Roborock.
- Protect carpets and rugs. Roll up valuable or loose rugs for the first test. If your robot cannot reliably lift, retract, or detach its mop, create a No-Mop Zone, No-Go Zone, or invisible wall in the app.
- Charge the robot and leave the dock in its normal position. Starting from the dock generally gives the robot the best opportunity to use its saved map and return for servicing.
Roborock provides model-specific instructions for families including the S5, S6, S7, S8, Qrevo, Q5 Pro+, and Q-series models. Hardware and app controls should not be assumed to be interchangeable.

Set up a Roborock with a removable mop module
This workflow applies broadly to basic models with a detachable water tank and washable cloth. Your model may use a slightly different latch or attachment shape.
1. Remove the tank or tank assembly
Take the water tank, or the combined dustbin-and-water-tank unit, out of the robot. Open the stopper or lid without forcing it. If the assembly contains electronic components, do not immerse the complete unit in water.
2. Add cold water
Fill the appropriate tank with cold tap water unless your model’s manual says otherwise. Close the stopper firmly and reinstall the tank until it is fully seated. Roborock manuals warn that hot water can deform some tanks.
Recommended Free Tools
Basic models may not warn you when the tank becomes empty, so inspect the water level before a long job and check it manually if the mop stops leaving a damp track. Roborock’s support guidance says an empty-tank alert is not universal.
3. Dampen and wring the cloth
Wet the mop cloth, then wring it until it is damp but no longer dripping. A completely dry cloth may give poor initial coverage; a saturated cloth can leave excess water, streaks, or puddles.
4. Attach the cloth
Slide or insert the cloth into its slot and press it flat against the fastening strips. Check that it is not folded, bunched, twisted, or hanging loose. An uneven cloth can reduce contact with the floor and interfere with movement.
5. Install the mop assembly
Slide the water tank, mop bracket, or mopping module into the rear or underside of the robot as shown in the model manual. It should sit flush and lock or click into position. Do not start a run if the module is loose.
Older S5 and S6-style machines generally use a simple manual cloth-and-tank arrangement. S7 and S8 models use dedicated mop mounts or vibrating mop plates, so their installation is different even though the preparation principles are similar.
Set up S7, S8, Qrevo, and newer systems
S7 and S8-style vibrating mops
Supported S7 and S8 models use a dedicated mop assembly and, on some versions, can lift the mop when carpet is detected. Install the specified cloth mount, attach the cloth flat, fill the compatible tank, and check the app for water-flow, scrubbing, and carpet options.

Roborock states that certain S7, S7 MaxV, S8, and S8 Pro Ultra models can vacuum without mopping either by removing the water tank or by selecting Vacuum instead of Mop or Vac&Mop.
Qrevo rotating-pad systems
Qrevo configurations commonly use two rotating mop pads beneath the robot rather than the flat cloth module used by older models. The dock typically supplies clean water, washes the pads, collects dirty water, and may dry the pads. Attach the correct pads underneath the robot and fill the dock’s clean-water tank when required; do not assume that a Qrevo’s procedure is the same as an S5 or S6’s.

Premium newer models
Some newer Q-series and Saros models add features such as mop lifting, retraction, automatic pad detachment, extending mop arms, hot-water washing, detergent dispensing, or heated drying. These features are model-specific. Enable them in the app only if your particular robot supports them, and follow the supplied manual for tank and dock maintenance.
Choose the correct cleaning mode in the Roborock app
Open the robot in the Roborock app, select the room or zone, choose the cleaning mode, and adjust the available water or scrubbing controls. App labels may change with firmware and app updates.
| App choice | What it generally does |
|---|---|
| Vacuum | Dry vacuuming only. |
| Mop | Mopping only, where supported. |
| Vac&Mop | Vacuuming and mopping during the same run. |
| Room or zone cleaning | Limits cleaning to selected rooms or map areas. |
| Water flow or scrub intensity | Changes moisture delivery or agitation on supported models. |
Choose Mop when loose dirt has already been removed and you want a mopping-only pass. Choose Vac&Mop for routine combined cleaning, provided the floor is not heavily covered in loose or wet debris. If a floor is dusty or sandy, vacuum it first rather than asking the robot to turn that debris into mud.
Some models also offer room cleaning, zone cleaning, schedules, routines, mop-washing frequency, and carpet behavior. Do not assume that installing the mop automatically starts a mopping cycle; the selected mode still matters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a water-flow or scrubbing setting
There is no single best setting for every floor. Start conservatively and adjust after observing the result.
- Low: Suitable for light maintenance cleaning or surfaces that should receive less moisture. It can leave the cloth too dry if the tank, filter, or flow path is restricted.
- Medium: A sensible starting point for many sealed hard floors.
- High or stronger scrubbing: Useful for heavier residue on suitable floors, but it increases drying time and the risk of streaks, puddles, or over-wetting.
Floor finish, room temperature, cloth condition, and the robot’s design all affect the result. For moisture-sensitive flooring, follow the flooring manufacturer’s guidance and use the lowest effective water setting. Do not make a blanket assumption that every hardwood floor is safe to mop.
Keep carpets and rugs dry
Carpet protection depends on the robot’s hardware, map, and settings.

If the robot lifts the mop
Enable the supported carpet-avoidance or mop-lifting behavior and verify the carpet settings in the app. Mop lifting reduces contact with carpet but is not the same as removing the mop entirely; test the behavior before scheduling unattended cleaning.

If the robot retracts or detaches the mop
Confirm that automatic retraction or mop-cloth mount disassembly is enabled and supported by your model. Roborock documents automatic mop-mount disassembly for selected products, not every robot.
If the robot has no reliable carpet handling
Create a No-Mop Zone, No-Go Zone, or invisible wall, or remove the rug. No-Mop Zones are the conservative choice for valuable rugs, thick carpet, and homes where the map is not yet reliable. Some older systems apply No-Mop Zones only when the mop bracket is installed.
Run a short supervised test in a mixed hard-floor and carpet area. A robot can wet carpet if the feature is unavailable, disabled, misconfigured, or working from an inaccurate map.
What cleaning solution can you use?
Plain water is the lowest-risk default. Do not add vinegar, bleach, disinfectant, dish soap, essential oils, or generic floor cleaner. Roborock warns that non-approved cleaner can create bubbles that block a filter or water outlet; other chemicals may leave residue, cause corrosion, or conflict with the model’s instructions.

That guidance should not override your model or dock manual. Use an approved solution only where the manufacturer says it is compatible, and measure the dilution rather than pouring concentrate into the tank.
For docked models, check whether solution belongs in a designated detergent container rather than the clean-water tank. If the manual does not clearly permit a product, use plain water.

Basic removable-tank models
- Remove the mop module.
- Wash the cloth after use.
- Empty unused water from the tank rather than leaving it standing.
- Rinse only the detachable, water-safe components specified by the manual.
- Let the cloth and tank dry before storage.
- Remove the mopping module when switching back to dry vacuuming, unless your model’s instructions say otherwise.
Roborock’s Q5 Pro+ instructions specifically recommend washing the mop cloth after each use and regularly emptying unused water to help prevent odor.
All-in-one docks
- Check the clean-water tank and refill it when necessary.
- Empty the dirty-water tank when prompted or when full.
- Make sure mop washing and drying are enabled where available.
- Inspect the dock’s cleaning tray, filter, and water channels.
- Do not assume the mop is dry merely because the robot returned to the dock.
Roborock identifies some detachable rollers, roller covers, tanks, and filters as washable, but electronic components and the upper portion of the charging dock must stay dry. Consult the model manual before rinsing any part.

Troubleshooting common mopping problems
The mop cloth stays dry or barely damp
- Pause the robot and confirm that the tank contains water.
- Check that the stopper is closed correctly and the tank is fully seated.
- Remove and reinstall the cloth flat and securely.
- Raise the water-flow or scrub-intensity setting if the model offers it.
- Inspect and clean the water filter and outlet according to the manual.
- On docked models, check the dock’s clean-water tank, tray, and filter.
- Run a short supervised test.
Roborock’s S8 troubleshooting guidance identifies the tank, cloth installation, and scrub-intensity setting as initial checks when little or no water reaches the floor.
There is too much water or puddling
Lower the water setting and inspect the tank, lid, stopper, and filter. A damaged tank, poor seal, incorrectly fitted filter, or unsupported detergent may cause leakage or foaming. Stop unattended operation until the cause is identified.
The robot wets the carpet
Check whether your model actually lifts, retracts, or detaches its mop. Verify the relevant carpet setting and map. If the result is unreliable, create a No-Mop or No-Go Zone, use an invisible wall, or remove the rug.
The robot refuses to start mopping
Check that the water tank and mop assembly are installed, the cloth is attached, the battery is charged, and the app is not set to Vacuum only. Also check for tank, tray, dock, or mop-related error messages.
The robot misses a room or zone
Look for a closed door, an obstacle blocking the entrance, an inaccurate map, or a robot that has been moved manually. A dirty wall sensor can also contribute to missed areas or abnormal paths; clean it with a damp cloth and retry.
If a selected zone was previously behind a closed door, Roborock recommends opening the door, running normal cleaning near that entrance, and then retrying the zone-cleaning request.
The mop smells
Wash the cloth after each use on manual systems, empty unused water, and allow the cloth and tank to dry. For docked systems, empty the dirty-water tank and clean the dock tray and filters. Confirm that drying is enabled and completing its cycle.
Which Roborock mopping system do you have?
| Roborock family | Typical mopping arrangement | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| S5, S6, and similar older models | Manual removable tank and cloth. | Expect to wet, wash, empty, and dry the components yourself; use map-based carpet restrictions. |
| S7 and S8 families | Dedicated vibrating mop systems, with lifting on supported versions. | Check mop-lift, scrubbing, water-flow, and carpet settings for the exact model. |
| Qrevo family | Often rotating mop pads with an all-in-one washing dock. | Maintain clean- and dirty-water tanks, trays, filters, and drying functions. |
| Saros and newer premium models | May include retraction, detachment, extending mop arms, hot-water washing, or detergent handling. | Automation varies considerably; use the exact manual and app guide. |
If you need replacement cloths or pads, buy parts listed for the exact model. Roborock uses several incompatible shapes and mounting systems, and a Qrevo pad is not automatically suitable for an S5, S6, S7, S8, or Saros.
A safe first mopping cycle
- Identify the exact robot and read its model-specific mopping instructions.
- Remove clutter and vacuum the floor first.
- Roll up rugs or create No-Mop Zones.
- Fill the appropriate tank or dock reservoir with cold water.
- Dampen and wring the cloth until it stops dripping.
- Attach the cloth or pads correctly and install the mop assembly.
- Open the Roborock app and select Mop or Vac&Mop.
- Start with a moderate or low water setting.
- Supervise the first run, checking hard-floor coverage and carpet behavior.
- Wash, empty, inspect, and dry the mop system when the run ends.
That process accommodates the main differences between manual mop modules, vibrating systems, and dock-washed rotating pads without treating them as identical.
