A cement-based energy-storage prototype has powered a small array of LEDs, but it has not powered a house. The laboratory-scale device uses 3D-printed electrodes on a concrete slab to store and release energy. Its reported strength and demonstration are promising research results—not proof of a building-ready foundation.
How the cement-based supercapacitor works
Researchers Jing Zhong, Wencai Ren and Haiping Wu mixed carbon nanotubes, carbon black and cement into a printable electrode ink. They deposited it on a small concrete slab in an interlocking-finger pattern, creating electrodes with a short path for charged ions to travel.
As the cement hydrated, pores filled with water, allowing ions to move between the electrodes. The reported design was more efficient than earlier iterations. It stores energy electrochemically rather than generating energy: a nearby source, such as solar panels, would need to charge it.
Why use a supercapacitor?
Supercapacitors generally store less energy than batteries but can absorb and release it rapidly. The trade-off matters for buildings: a device that can deliver power quickly is not necessarily able to supply enough energy to run a home over time.

What the prototype demonstrated
Three devices printed on one slab and wired together powered a small array of LEDs, according to Industrial Equipment News. The report also says the device’s compressive strength was comparable to commercial concrete used in slabs and stairs.
Those results establish a small electrical demonstration and a limited strength comparison. They do not show a full-scale foundation installation, code compliance, long-term structural durability, or enough stored energy to meet a building’s demand. The report provides no device-level capacity, energy density, cost, lifetime or charge/discharge efficiency figures.
What remains unproven for construction
The report describes stable operation under moderate heating and cooling, but says performance began to decline at around 0°F (−18°C). Improving cold-weather performance is identified as future work. That temperature limitation and the absence of full-scale durability data leave important questions for foundations exposed to seasonal conditions.
Other essential measures are also not reported for this device, including cycle life, installation complexity, safety, usable energy capacity and performance at building scale. The report notes that some supercapacitors can last millions of cycles, but gives no cycle-life measurement for this prototype.

Although the article contrasts embedded storage with bulky batteries and mentions solar panels as a potential energy source, it does not present a measured comparison with commercial battery systems. Those examples describe a possible future application, not a demonstrated advantage or product recommendation.

For now, this is a research prototype—not an available foundation technology. The study report points toward a concept in which building materials might store energy as well as support structures, but it does not show that a home’s foundation can power the entire building. As Zhong put it: “If building materials could not only support structures but also store energy, sense their surroundings, and even interact with people, buildings would become more than passive shelters. They could become truly smart environments.”
