Where and when will I-70 close?
The planned closure covers the I-70 segment from The Paseo to Van Brunt Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. It does not mean all of I-70 in the Kansas City metro or elsewhere in Missouri will be closed. MoDOT’s project notice lists January 11, 2027, as the scheduled start, weather permitting; its closure page describes the overall window as January through December 2027. This 11-month closure is Phase 3 of the larger Improve I-70 KC project, which began construction in spring 2025 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2028. The wider project runs between The Paseo Boulevard and U.S. 40/31st Street. MoDOT describes it as a design-build project coordinated with the Federal Highway Administration. Which routes should drivers use?
There is no single best detour for every trip. MoDOT says regional I-70 through traffic will be routed south of the closure using I-435 and I-470, with message boards directing drivers on both the Missouri and Kansas sides. For local trips, the appropriate route depends on where the trip begins and ends; follow current signs and check navigation against MoDOT’s live information.

Downtown and stadium trips
- Downtown to the stadiums: MoDOT lists I-35 north to I-435 south, or US-71 south to I-435 north.
- Stadiums to downtown: MoDOT lists I-435 north to I-35 south, or I-435 south to US-71 north.
Other Kansas City metro trips
MoDOT identifies I-435, I-35, I-29, I-635 and US-71 as possible highway alternatives. Its closure page also provides examples for trips involving the airport, Kansas City, Kansas, and other east-west metro journeys. Use its map and current navigation guidance for those specific origins and destinations rather than assuming one route fits all trips.
MoDOT’s instruction is: “Drivers are encouraged to utilize GPS and other navigational tools to find the best route for their specific travels.” These are route suggestions, not travel-time estimates; the agency’s pages do not establish how long a particular trip will take during the closure. Will streets crossing I-70 stay open?
MoDOT plans to keep nearly all streets crossing I-70 open to reduce the effect on local travel. That is a plan, not a guarantee that every crossing will remain open at every point in construction. Check signs and current MoDOT information for the status of a particular street.
Why is MoDOT closing the interstate instead of keeping lanes open?
MoDOT says a full closure allows crews to work across the corridor at the same time, avoids repeatedly setting up and removing work zones, and keeps live interstate traffic out of the active work area. The agency expects this approach to shorten the overall project by about a year and let it complete more work within the fixed project budget. These are MoDOT’s stated reasons and expected benefits.

MoDOT also reports that its traffic modeling found a westbound one-lane alternative could mean peak-period speeds below 20 mph and delays of about 50 minutes, and estimated that roughly two-thirds of drivers would divert anyway. The closure page does not identify the underlying model’s report, date or assumptions, so these figures are MoDOT-reported projections—not observed conditions or independently verified travel forecasts.

MoDOT says the project addresses deteriorating infrastructure, reliability and safety concerns, and pedestrian and bicycle connectivity. The agency says the Benton and Jackson curves will be rebuilt to current design standards. It is not adding a fourth westbound lane now because of capacity constraints west of the project in the downtown loop; MoDOT says the new bridges and walls will leave room for a possible future lane. - Confirm the latest closure dates and limits on MoDOT’s closure page.
- Use MoDOT’s live route map and current navigation tools to choose a route for your particular origin and destination.
- Follow posted message boards and allow for route changes as construction progresses.
- Check the status of any cross street you plan to use rather than relying on the general plan to keep nearly all crossings open.
