Blocked vents, a door that is not sealing, settings, or a model-specific fault can all cause this symptom. It does not identify one failed part by itself. First protect any perishable food, then check cooling, doors, airflow, and actual temperatures.
Why the freezer can stay cold while the refrigerator warms
Many refrigerators produce cold air in the freezer and circulate some of it into the fresh-food compartment through vents. A damper may regulate that airflow. If a vent is blocked or the air-transfer system is not working as intended, the freezer can remain cold while the refrigerator warms. Other possibilities include a door that does not close, incorrect settings, cooling switched off, or an internal fault that needs model-specific diagnosis. The symptom alone cannot confirm which cause applies.

Vent locations and control behavior vary by model. Some controls change airflow to the refrigerator compartment; others affect compressor runtime or both compartments. Use the owner’s manual rather than assuming a control works the same way across refrigerator designs.

- Confirm cooling is on. Check the controls and the owner’s manual. Some models may need to be turned back on after a power outage or surge, or may have been switched off during cleaning.
- Check the doors and gaskets. Make sure food containers, drawers, or shelves are not preventing the refrigerator door from closing. Inspect and clean the gasket as the manufacturer recommends.
- Clear the vents. Find the supply and return vents in both compartments using the manual. Move food and containers away from them, and leave space for air to circulate. Vent locations differ by model.
- Review the temperature controls. Follow the manual’s instructions and make only small adjustments. Allow time for temperatures to stabilize before deciding whether a change helped.
- Measure temperatures directly. Place appliance thermometers in both compartments. A display or a touch test is not a substitute for a temperature reading.
- Arrange diagnosis if the refrigerator remains warm. If basic checks do not restore safe temperatures, seek service for your specific make and model rather than replacing a fan, damper, control, or other component based only on the symptom.
Keep food safety separate from appliance troubleshooting
The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service recommends keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F (4.4°C) and the freezer at or below 0°F (-17.8°C). A cold freezer does not establish that food in the refrigerator is being held safely; measure both compartments.

FoodSafety.gov advises discarding perishable food that has been above 40°F for two hours or more, or for one hour when the surrounding temperature is above 90°F. If you do not know how long perishable food has been warm, use current official food-safety guidance and err on the side of caution.
When a model-specific repair clue applies
A Whirlpool technical service pointer issued in January 2019 describes warm-refrigerator, cold-freezer symptoms accompanied by ice growth and a ticking or clipping fan noise on a limited set of KitchenAid and Jenn-Air French-door refrigerators. It covers model families KRFC604F, KRFC704F, and JFFCC72EF with serial numbers K601–K750, and directs technicians to follow a fault-tree process before carrying out the specified repair.

That document is not a general diagnosis for other refrigerators, including other serial ranges or models. Ice buildup or fan noise may be worth reporting to a technician, but neither proves that the same fault or repair applies to your appliance.
When to stop troubleshooting
- The refrigerator remains above the recommended 40°F threshold after basic checks and time for temperatures to stabilize.
- You see ice buildup or hear unusual fan noise and need a technician to determine whether a model-specific service procedure applies.
- You cannot determine from the owner’s manual how your model’s controls or vents work.
Share the make, full model number, serial number, measured temperatures, and any relevant noises or visible ice with the service provider. This helps them assess the issue without guessing at a replacement part.
