If your dishwasher smells bad, the best cleaner is usually a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner used after you physically clean the filter, gasket, spray arms, and sump area. That order matters. A cleaner tablet can dissolve mineral film and detergent residue, but it will not remove a wad of food from the filter, fix a kinked drain hose, or stop sink water from backing into the machine.
For most US homeowners in 2026, expect to spend about $5 to $9 for a single-use or small-pack dishwasher cleaner, or $13 to $23 and up for multi-packs. Brands such as Affresh, Finish, Glisten, Cascade, Lemi Shine, Active, and Oh Yuk can all be useful when matched to the problem. The bigger question is whether your odor is maintenance, water chemistry, or drainage.
On our kitchen remodel and service punch-list work, we use a simple rule: if the smell improves for several weeks after cleaning, you are dealing with maintenance. If it comes back in 1 to 3 days, inspect the drain path, disposal connection, air gap or high loop, and standing water in the tub. That is where many homeowners waste money buying cleaner after cleaner when the dishwasher is telling them it has a system problem.
Best Dishwasher Cleaner for Smell: The Short Answer
For odor control, choose a dishwasher cleaner that does at least one of two jobs: breaks down organic residue or removes mineral scale that traps grime. In hard-water homes, a citric-acid descaling cleaner is usually the most practical first choice. It helps cut the chalky film, detergent buildup, and greasy residue that hold odor inside the tub, spray arms, sump, and racks.

If the smell is sour, musty, or like old food, start with the filter and sump before running any cleaner. If the smell is metallic, chemical, electrical, rotten egg, or sewer-like, stop treating it like a product problem. Those odors may involve wiring, drain gas, backflow, or failed drainage components.
The best dishwasher cleaner for smell is not one magic product. It is a maintenance sequence:
- Remove and wash the filter by hand.
- Wipe the door gasket, detergent cup, lower door lip, and utensil basket.
- Check spray arm holes for rice, seeds, glass, or label fragments.
- Run a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner on the hottest recommended cycle.
- Inspect for standing water after the cycle finishes.
- If odor returns within 1 to 3 days, inspect the drain hose, air gap, high loop, and disposal connection.
What Dishwasher Odors Usually Mean
A bad dishwasher smell usually falls into one of four categories. Separating them saves time and money.
Old Food or Sour Odor
This is the most common. Food particles, grease, and soap residue collect in the filter, sump screen, door gasket, lower spray arm, and the hidden lower lip of the door. The machine may still wash reasonably well, but the wet organic residue sits between cycles and turns sour.
Common causes include a filter that has not been cleaned in 30 to 90 days, dishes sitting for several days before a cycle, heavy cooking, pet bowls, greasy pans, or too much detergent. Modern dishwashers are designed for scraped dishes, not fully pre-rinsed dishes, but large food chunks should not go into the machine.
Musty or Mildew Odor
A musty smell usually means water is staying where it should not. Look for water pooled under the filter, a clogged sump screen, a partially blocked drain hose, or a door left latched tight in a damp machine. A clean dishwasher should be able to dry out between cycles.
Hard-Water or Mineral Odor
Hard water creates scale. Scale itself may not smell terrible, but it holds detergent residue, grease, and food film. If you see white haze on the tub, cloudy glasses, chalky deposits around spray arms, or crust near the heating element area, use a citric-acid cleaner monthly and review your detergent and rinse-aid settings.
Rotten Egg, Sewer, or Backflow Odor
This is the odor category to take seriously. Sewer-like smells, dirty sink water backing into the dishwasher, standing water after a completed cycle, or water spilling from the air gap point to drainage or plumbing issues. No cleaner fixes a missing high loop, clogged air gap tube, disposal knockout plug left in place, or failed drain pump.

Most dishwasher cleaners are inexpensive enough to try, but they are not all aimed at the same problem. Here is how we explain the options to homeowners.
| Cleaner Type | Best For | Typical 2026 Cost | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citric-acid descaling tablet or powder | Hard-water film, mineral scale, detergent residue, general odor maintenance | $5-$9 single or small pack; $13-$23+ multi-pack | Will not fix drain routing, standing water, or backflow |
| Liquid dishwasher cleaner | Grease film, tub residue, monthly maintenance | About $5-$15 depending on size and pack count | May be less targeted for heavy mineral scale |
| Enzyme or deodorizing cleaner | Organic food odors, sour smells, biofilm | Often $8-$25 depending on brand and count | Not a substitute for hand-cleaning the filter |
| White vinegar | Light odor and mild film in a budget cleanup | $0-$5 if already on hand | Use sparingly; repeated acidic use may be hard on rubber parts over time |
| Baking soda | Light deodorizing after cleaning | $0-$5 if already on hand | Does not descale like citric acid and will not clear a clog |
If you want one cleaner to keep on hand, choose a fragrance-free or lightly scented citric-acid dishwasher cleaner. Heavy fragrance can mask a problem for a few days, which is not helpful if the dishwasher is holding dirty water.

Our Practical Ranking: What to Buy First
We do not rank dishwasher cleaners by packaging claims. We rank them by what problem they solve in a real kitchen.
Best First Choice for Most Homes: Citric-Acid Cleaner
Use this when the dishwasher smells stale, has white film, leaves cloudy glasses, or has not been cleaned in a month or more. Citric-acid formulas are useful because they attack mineral deposits and the residue stuck to those deposits. Affresh, Finish, Glisten, Cascade, and Lemi Shine all sit in this practical category.
Typical use is one tablet, pouch, or bottle in an empty dishwasher on a hot cycle. Read the label because some products go in the detergent cup, some sit in the bottom of the tub, and some bottles are placed upside down in the rack.
Best for Strong Food Odor: Filter Cleaning Plus Enzyme Cleaner
If the odor smells like old food, do not start with a scented cleaner. Remove the bottom rack, unlock the filter, rinse it under warm water, scrub it gently with a soft brush, and wipe the sump screen. Then run an enzyme or deodorizing cleaner if odor remains.
This is a 20 to 40 minute job the first time if the filter is neglected. After that, it is usually 5 to 10 minutes monthly.
Best for Hard Water: Descaler Plus Rinse-Aid Adjustment
Hard water homes need a cleaner routine, not a one-time rescue. Run a citric-acid cleaner monthly, keep rinse aid filled, and check whether your dishwasher has a rinse-aid dosage setting. If glasses are cloudy and the tub has white deposits, the machine needs help drying and shedding minerals.

How to Clean a Smelly Dishwasher Step by Step
This is the process we recommend before replacing parts or calling for service.
1. Empty the Dishwasher and Pull the Lower Rack
Remove dishes, racks if needed, and any loose debris. Look in the bottom of the tub for glass, labels, seeds, bones, twist ties, and plastic film. Small debris can block the drain path or jam the pump.
2. Remove and Wash the Filter
Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter assembly at the bottom. Turn it according to the arrows, lift it out, and rinse it under warm water. Use a soft brush, not a wire brush. Check the owner manual if the filter does not release easily.

For a normal household, monthly filter cleaning is a good baseline. Clean it every 1 to 2 weeks if you cook heavily, wash pet bowls, leave dishes sitting for days, have hard water, or notice odor before the month is up.
3. Wipe the Gasket and Door Lip
The lower door edge is one of the dirtiest parts of many dishwashers because it does not get blasted the same way the tub does. Wipe the gasket, corners, detergent dispenser area, and bottom lip with warm water and mild dish soap. Use a toothbrush for tight corners.
4. Check Spray Arms
Spin the spray arms by hand. They should move freely. If the holes are clogged with rice, seeds, paper labels, or scale, remove the arm if your model allows it and rinse it out. A toothpick or small plastic pick can clear holes without damaging them.
5. Run Hot Water at the Sink
If your dishwasher is far from the water heater, run the kitchen sink hot tap until the water is fully hot before starting the dishwasher. This can improve wash performance and reduce greasy residue. Long pipe runs can send a dishwasher several quarts of cold or lukewarm water at the start of a cycle.
6. Run the Cleaner on a Hot Empty Cycle
Use the dishwasher cleaner according to the label. Pick the hottest normal or cleaning cycle the dishwasher allows. Do not add detergent unless the cleaner instructions say to.
7. Check for Standing Water
After the cycle ends, look below the filter area. A small amount of water in the sump can be normal on some models, but visible standing water across the tub floor is not. If water remains, the odor may be drainage-related.
When Cleaner Is Not Enough: Drainage and Installation Issues
A dishwasher is part appliance and part plumbing fixture. Odor complaints after a kitchen remodel, disposal replacement, countertop change, or dishwasher swap often trace back to the drain connection.
Check the Garbage Disposal Knockout Plug
If a new garbage disposal was installed and the dishwasher stopped draining afterward, the disposal knockout plug may still be in place. The dishwasher drain hose connects to a port on the disposal. That port is sealed from the factory. It must be knocked out before the hose is connected.
Recommended Free Tools
This is a common installation miss. Symptoms include standing water, poor draining, and odor within a cycle or two of the disposal work.
Check the High Loop or Air Gap
The dishwasher drain hose must be routed to prevent dirty sink water from flowing back into the dishwasher. Many installations use a high loop, where the drain hose is secured high under the sink cabinet before dropping to the disposal or sink tailpiece. Other jurisdictions require an approved air gap mounted at the sink or countertop.

Code requirements vary. Domestic dishwasher drains are treated as a cross-connection and backflow concern, not just an odor concern. Some plumbing codes require indirect discharge through an air gap or air break, and UPC jurisdictions are especially strict about dishwasher air gaps. Your local code and the dishwasher installation manual control the final requirement.
Watch the Air Gap During a Drain Cycle
If your sink has an air gap, run the dishwasher and watch it during the drain portion of the cycle. Water coming out of the air gap usually means there is a clog downstream, often in the tube from the air gap to the disposal or sink drain. Cleaning the dishwasher tub will not solve that.

Look for Kinked or Low Drain Hose Routing
Under-sink cabinets get crowded. Storage bins, cleaning bottles, and disposal work can push the drain hose down or kink it. The hose should not be crushed, sagging full of dirty water, or rubbing against sharp cabinet holes. Cabinet penetrations should be protected so the hose does not get cut over time.
2026 Cost Guide: Cleaner, Repair, or Replacement
The cost decision is straightforward. Spend a small amount on cleaning first when the machine drains normally and the odor is mild to moderate. Stop buying cleaners when there is standing water, backflow, repeated air-gap overflow, leaking, pump noise, or odor that returns almost immediately.
| Fix | Typical 2026 Cost | When It Makes Sense |
|---|---|---|
| DIY hand-cleaning with vinegar or baking soda | $0-$15 | Light odor, dirty filter, mild residue, no standing water |
| Dedicated dishwasher cleaner | $5-$9 single or small pack; $13-$23+ multi-pack | Monthly maintenance, hard-water film, detergent residue |
| Small replacement parts | Varies by OEM model; often low material cost | Damaged filter, gasket, hose clamp, or minor drain part |
| Air gap part | About $10-$30 basic part; $80-$150 pro replacement reported | Missing, damaged, clogged, or finish-matched air gap work |
| Drain-related repair | Commonly $120-$300 | Clog, hose issue, pump concern, or installation defect |
| Professional dishwasher repair | $70-$600 overall; many homeowners spend $160-$300 | Standing water, pump noise, leaks, electrical smell, recurring failures |
| Basic replacement labor | Roughly $144-$500 | Old unit replacement with usable plumbing and electrical |
| New dishwasher installed all-in | Commonly $600-$1,700 | End-of-life appliance, repeated repairs, remodel, code upgrades |
A cleaner is worth trying when the dishwasher is otherwise working. But if you spend $20 to $40 on cleaners over a month and the odor keeps returning in 1 to 3 days, put that money toward diagnosis. Drain problems do not improve with fragrance.

DIY Is Reasonable When
Handle it yourself when the dishwasher drains fully, there are no leaks, the odor is food-like or musty, and the machine runs normally. Cleaning the filter, gasket, spray arms, sump screen, and running a cleaner are homeowner-level tasks. Most people can complete the full process in under an hour.

Hire a Pro When
Call an appliance technician or plumber when there is standing water, repeated air-gap overflow, dirty sink water backing into the tub, sewage odor, leaking, loud drain-pump noise, burning electrical smell, tripped breakers, or odor that started after a remodel or new disposal installation.
For a recently completed kitchen project, the punch list should include more than confirming the dishwasher turns on. On our jobs, we verify the unit is level, the disposal knockout is removed, the drain hose is routed correctly, the high loop or air gap matches the approved installation, cabinet holes are protected, there is no standing water after a cycle, and a test cycle runs before the job is closed.
Safety, Code, and Permit Notes
Dishwasher odor can be a comfort issue, but drainage is a health and code issue. The drain connection is designed to keep contaminated sink or disposal water from entering the dishwasher. That is why air gaps, air breaks, and high loops matter.

Do not ignore sewage odor or backflow. Do not keep running a dishwasher with an electrical burning smell. If you remove toe-kick panels for inspection, turn off power at the breaker when working near wiring or the junction box. If plumbing or electrical modifications are needed, local permit and inspection rules may apply, especially during kitchen remodels, appliance relocation, new circuits, GFCI updates, or countertop changes for an air gap.
Local requirements differ by city and state. Some areas allow a high loop when installed according to the manufacturer. Others require a countertop or sink-mounted air gap. The correct answer is the stricter of the local code, the adopted plumbing code, and the appliance installation instructions.
How to Prevent Dishwasher Smell From Coming Back
The best long-term odor control is routine maintenance plus correct installation. Use this schedule as a starting point:
- After each load: scrape dishes, remove large food pieces, and leave the door cracked briefly if the tub stays damp.
- Weekly: wipe the door edge and check the bottom of the tub for debris.
- Monthly: clean the filter and run a dishwasher cleaner if you have odor, hard water, or visible film.
- Every 3 to 6 months: inspect the under-sink drain hose, high loop or air gap, and disposal connection.
- After any disposal or dishwasher installation: run a full test cycle and confirm the tub drains completely.
Use the dishwasher as designed. Current efficiency guidance for modern dishwashers is to scrape dishes rather than fully pre-rinse them. Heavy pre-rinsing wastes water and can interfere with soil-sensor behavior. Scrape off chunks, load correctly, and let the machine and detergent do their work.
Also match the cycle to the load. A quick or eco cycle may be fine for lightly soiled dishes, but greasy pans, casserole dishes, and packed loads need enough heat, time, and detergent action to break down residue. Chronic odor sometimes comes from asking a short cycle to do heavy-cycle work.
Bottom Line
The best dishwasher cleaner for smell is a citric-acid cleaner used after a proper hand-cleaning of the filter, gasket, spray arms, and sump area. Budget $5 to $9 for a single-use cleaner or $13 to $23 and up for multi-packs. Use it monthly if you have hard water, visible film, or recurring mild odor.
If the odor returns within a few days, stop treating the dishwasher like a dirty box and start treating it like a connected home system. Check for standing water, air-gap overflow, a missing high loop, a clogged disposal connection, or a drain hose problem. That is where a $120 to $300 drain repair or installation correction can solve what $50 worth of cleaners never will.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best dishwasher cleaner for smell in 2026?
For most homes, a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner is the best first choice because it removes mineral scale, detergent residue, and grime that hold odor. Clean the filter and gasket by hand before running it.
Why does my dishwasher still smell bad after using a cleaner?
If the smell returns in 1 to 3 days, the cause is often a dirty filter, standing water, clogged drain hose, disposal knockout plug, air-gap blockage, missing high loop, or backflow from the sink drain.
Is vinegar safe to use in a dishwasher to remove odors?
White vinegar can help with light odor and mild film, but use it sparingly. Repeated acidic cleaning may be hard on rubber parts over time, and vinegar will not fix clogs, backflow, or drain-pump issues.
How often should I clean my dishwasher filter?
Monthly is a good baseline. Clean it every 1 to 2 weeks if you cook heavily, wash pet bowls, have hard water, leave dishes sitting for days, or notice odor before the month is up.
What is the difference between a dishwasher air gap and a high loop?
An air gap is a physical fitting, usually mounted at the sink or countertop, that helps prevent backflow. A high loop routes the drain hose high under the sink cabinet. Local code and the dishwasher manual determine which is allowed.
