Choose glue by the two materials you’re joining, then check that the specific product is approved for those materials and the job. This chart is a first screen—not a compatibility guarantee: adhesives in the same family can differ, and load, fit, flexibility, exposure and assembly method all matter.

Start with the materials—and the job

Identify both surfaces as specifically as you can. “Plastic” is not a precise material description: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), acrylic, PVC and other plastics can behave very differently. Then decide what the joint must do. A close-fitting ornament repair is not the same problem as a loaded bracket or an outdoor joint exposed to water and temperature changes.

Karl F. Plitt’s U.S. National Bureau of Standards guide, Adhesives for Everyday Use: A Consumer’s Guide (November 1970), puts the principle plainly: “The end use of the article must be considered.” Use a chart to narrow the options; use the product label and manufacturer’s instructions to confirm a specific adhesive is suitable.

Which glue to use where: a first-pass chart

Materials being joined Starting point What to check before choosing
Wood to wood, close-fitting joint PVA wood glue is a familiar starting point. Check whether the product suits the wood, joint, moisture exposure and expected load. Follow its instructions for surface preparation, working time and clamping.
Wood to a nonporous material Epoxy may be an option for wood and many nonporous materials. Confirm both substrates on the product directions. Epoxy products vary; check mixing, gap, cure and exposure requirements.
Hard plastic to hard plastic, close-fitting repair Cyanoacrylate (super glue) may suit selected plastics. Identify the exact plastic and check the product’s compatibility list. Many products exclude plastics such as PE and PP.
Broad-area laminate or some flexible materials Contact adhesive may suit certain laminating and flexible-material applications. Check the exact materials, application method, ventilation and open time. Some contact adhesives require applying to both surfaces and waiting before assembly; follow the product directions.
Flexible material to flexible or rigid material A rubber-based adhesive or a suitable urethane may be a starting point for some flexible bonds. Check the specific material pair, flexibility after cure, load and exposure. Product formulations are not interchangeable.
Selected sealing or flexible bonding jobs Silicone forms a rubbery bond on selected materials. Confirm that the product is intended to bond—not merely seal—the materials in question, and check exposure and cure instructions.
Small craft or quick assembly, where moderate strength is enough Hot-melt adhesive sets as it cools. It allows little adjustment after joining. The NBS consumer guide describes hot melt as having moderate strength and durability; treat that as historical general guidance, not a specification for a current glue stick.
Metal-to-metal joints An anaerobic adhesive may suit some metal assemblies; other adhesives may also be specified for metal. 3M describes anaerobics as curing where oxygen is absent and metal is present. Check the product’s intended joint and assembly instructions.

These are family-level starting points, not guarantees. The BSI Adhesives selection chart is also organized around substrates and use categories, but its extracted symbols do not establish a specific product recommendation for every pair. Check the named adhesive’s own directions.

ALECPEA Super Glue for Glass, 2 X 30g Thin Clear Adhesive, 6 Droppers
  • 📦 KEEP YOUR PROJECT MOVING – Running out halfway through several repairs is frustrating, while one opened oversized bottle can dry before you need it again. This set includes two 30g bottles, providing 60g total, plus six precision droppers. Keep one bottle sealed while using the other for household glass repairs, repeated craft projects, workshop jobs, or stocking a small glass décor business.
  • 💧 REACH NARROW JOINTS – Thick adhesive can leave a raised ridge while failing to reach the tight seam beneath it. The thin cyanoacrylate formula uses capillary action to wick between clean, closely matched glass edges and fine gaps. Use the six droppers to control placement across glass-to-glass joints, crystal ornaments, mirror décor, glazed ceramic, acrylic, and small glass-to-metal repairs.
  • ✨ SAVE THE LOOK, NOT JUST THE PIECE – White haze and hardened lumps can make repaired glass look worse than the original chip. This clear, low-bloom formula spreads in a fine layer to help reduce visible whitening and excess buildup when applied sparingly. The two-bottle format gives DIY users, repair workers, and craft sellers enough adhesive for multiple transparent or decorative projects.
  • ⚡ SET FAST, FINISH STRONG – Slippery pieces that shift during a slow repair can cure crooked and waste the item you were trying to rescue. On clean, close-fitting surfaces, the adhesive reaches an initial set in 15 seconds and completes its full cure in 12 hours. Keep each repair dry and undisturbed during curing, then use it around routine household water and temperature changes.
  • 🎯 OPEN ONE, STORE ONE – Dried nozzles and wasted glue are especially annoying when you purchased enough for future repairs. Attach one of the six droppers, apply only a thin layer, wipe the nozzle, cap the active bottle tightly, and store both bottles upright in a cool, dry place. The unopened bottle remains ready for later glass crafts, crystal repairs, sink accessories, or fully cured aquarium décor outside structural seams.

What changes the right choice?

  • Load and consequence: Consider how much force the joint will bear and what could happen if it fails. A glue chart is not engineering approval. For a heavily loaded or safety-critical connection, consider a designed mechanical fastener, replacement or specialist repair rather than assuming adhesive alone is adequate.
  • Fit and gap: Many fast repair adhesives are intended for close-fitting surfaces. Do not assume a product will fill a gap unless its instructions say so.
  • Rigid or flexible bond: A rigid cured joint may not suit parts that bend or move. Choose a product intended for the required flexibility.
  • Water, temperature and chemicals: Exposure limits vary by product. Verify the actual service conditions on the label or technical information.
  • Working time and cure: “Sets” or “grabs” does not necessarily mean fully cured. Check how long you have to position parts, whether they need to be held or clamped, and when the joint can be loaded.
  • Appearance: Consider whether a visible glue line, squeeze-out or cloudy finish is acceptable. Confirm suitability for the surfaces and finish.
  • Preparation and assembly: Dirt, oil and other surface contaminants can interfere with bonding. Clean and prepare surfaces only as the product specifies, then keep parts in position for the required set or cure period.

Plastic needs a specific compatibility check

Do not choose adhesive based on the word “plastic” alone. Find the resin or material identification where possible, then check the exact product’s list of compatible and incompatible materials. For example, Henkel’s U.S. page for Loctite Super Glue Liquid Professional lists selected hard plastics—including acrylic, polycarbonate, polystyrene and PVC—as compatible. It explicitly excludes PE, PP, PTFE, silicone, foam rubber, polystyrene foam, glass and pure bone china.

That product page identifies a 0.70 oz size and an ethyl cyanoacrylate formula, and states a 15–30 second set time. That timing is the manufacturer’s stated set time for this product, not an independent test or a promise that a repair is ready for full load in that interval. Use it only where the product’s compatibility and application directions fit the repair.

How adhesive families differ

Families describe broad behavior, but they do not replace product-specific instructions. 3M’s overview characterizes epoxies as available in one- and two-part forms; acrylics as two-part adhesives that can bond a wide range of substrates, including some difficult plastics and oily metals; urethanes as elastic bonds for flexible, dissimilar materials; cyanoacrylates as fast-curing adhesives for several low-porosity substrates; anaerobics as curing without oxygen in the presence of metal; and hot melts as setting on cooling. These are 3M’s broad classifications, not guarantees for every formulation.

The NBS guide, issued in November 1970, describes epoxy as a resin combined with a curing agent and notes uses including wood and nonporous materials. It describes rubber adhesives as elastic and useful for flexible materials bonded to flexible or rigid materials. These descriptions help explain why a family might be considered, but current product directions govern what a particular adhesive can do.

Use the product label for preparation and safety

  1. Verify the surfaces. Confirm that the named product covers both materials, including the exact plastic where relevant.
  2. Read the application directions. Follow any specified cleaning, surface preparation, mixing, application and assembly steps. Do not add an improvised treatment that the manufacturer does not direct.
  3. Plan the assembly. Check open time, repositioning limits, holding or clamping needs, set time and full cure guidance before applying adhesive.
  4. Check current safety information. Read the product label and safety data sheet for ventilation, protective equipment, fire precautions and disposal. Solvent-based adhesives can have handling risks; requirements are product-specific.

When a glue chart is not enough

A chart cannot establish whether a joint is structurally adequate, nor can a family name settle compatibility for an unidentified plastic or unusual exposure. If failure could injure someone, damage property or compromise a building component, do not treat a general household chart as design guidance. Use an appropriate fastening or repair method, or consult a qualified professional for the specific application.
