A Whirlpool washer that will not drain may have a kinked or incorrectly installed drain hose, a cycle or load issue, excess detergent, orโon some front-load modelsโa clogged drain pump filter. Start by checking whether water is actually standing in the drum or whether the clothes are simply wetter than usual; those symptoms point to different checks. The right instructions depend on your washerโs type and exact model.
First, tell standing water from wet clothes
If water remains visible in the drum, check the drain path and, if your model has one, its drain pump filter. If the drum has emptied but clothes are wetter than usual, a low-spin cycle, an unbalanced load, or a tightly packed load may be the issue rather than a drain failure. Redistribute the load and select an appropriate drain-and-spin cycle if your model offers one. Whirlpool discusses both symptoms in its washer troubleshooting guide and top-load washer guidance.
Check these causes in order
- Review the controls and load. For a top-load washer, make sure the lid is closed. Check that the chosen cycle and spin setting are appropriate, and redistribute an uneven or bulky load. Measure detergent according to your washerโs instructions; Whirlpool notes that using too much can interfere with draining and spinning.
- Inspect the drain hose. Look for a visible kink or blockage and check the hose installation against the instructions for your exact model. A hose can also be positioned in a way that lets water siphon out or return to the washer.
- Check the installation measurements in the matching instructions. Whirlpoolโs front-load guidance says to insert the drain hose no more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) into the drainpipe or laundry tub to reduce siphoning. It also says not to tape or seal the hose into the drainpipe: โThere must be a gap between the drain hose and the drain pipe to allow air to flow through.โ A separate Whirlpool troubleshooting guide gives a standpipe range of 30 inches minimum to 96 inches maximum. These measurements appear in different guidance contexts; follow the installation instructions for your washer rather than treating either figure as universal.
- Check for a drain pump filter only if your model has an accessible one. Filter availability and location vary, and some Whirlpool washers do not have an owner-accessible filter. Consult the ownerโs manual before opening anything. For models whose instructions describe filter access, Whirlpoolโs pump-filter cleaning instructions call for switching off the washer and preparing to collect residual water. Follow the model-specific steps; do not improvise access if the manual does not describe it.
What differs between front-load and top-load washers?
Front-load washers
Check hose position and installation first. If the manual identifies an accessible drain pump filter, it may collect lint, dirt, or small objects, but do not assume every front-load model has one. The ownerโs manual determines whether and how you can access it.
Top-load washers
Confirm the lid is shut, then review the cycle and spin setting, detergent amount, and load balance. A tightly packed or unbalanced load may not spin correctly and can leave clothes wetter. Check accessible hose installation, but use the model manual instead of taking apart the machine to look for a filter.

If the washer shows F9 E1

The code alone does not establish that the pump has failed. Use the instructions for your model, and seek service if the problem continues.
