Keep the exhaust hose short and as straight as possible, preserve the clearance shown in the manual around every grille, connect the supplied window kit, and seal its edges. This arrangement removes hot air outdoors instead of sending it back into the room.
The best location
Choose a spot in the room you want to cool that is near a suitable window, sliding door, or approved through-wall vent. DeLonghi’s official guidance says portable air conditioners generally need space for the appliance, a power outlet, and an external window for the exhaust hose.
- Set the unit on a level, stable floor.
- Keep it close enough to the vent opening for the supplied hose to stay short and straight.
- Leave the manufacturer-specified clearance around intake and outlet grilles.
- Keep the cooled room’s doors and windows closed while the unit operates.
Do not put the unit inside a cabinet, closet, or other enclosure. Restricted intake or outlet airflow can impair cooling and may overheat or damage the appliance.
How close should it be to the window?
Honeywell recommends positioning the unit about 20–40 inches from the venting outlet. The exact distance depends on the model, so use its installation diagram as the controlling requirement. A typical exhaust hose is about 4 feet (120 cm).

Keep the hose short and straight
Route the hose with broad, gentle bends. Do not tightly coil it, stretch it, crush it, or add an extension unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that configuration. Honeywell warns that extending the hose can restrict airflow, reduce cooling, damage the blower, and potentially affect warranty coverage.
Why a longer route performs worse
Every extra length and sharp bend increases resistance in the exhaust path. The unit must work harder to move hot air outdoors, while heat radiated from the hose can add to the room’s heat load. If the only possible location requires a long or sharply bent hose, a different portable-AC model, a properly installed wall vent, or a permanent air-conditioning option may be more suitable.
Use the right opening and seal it
Standard windows
Most portable units include a window panel and adapter for a vertically or horizontally sliding window. Install the panel as directed, attach the hose securely, and close the window against the panel. Seal gaps around the kit; Lowe’s installation guidance identifies this as important because leakage lets cooled air escape and warm outdoor air enter.

Sliding doors
A standard window panel may not span a patio or sliding door. Some models support a wider sliding-door kit. Verify that the accessory fits both the opening and your exact air-conditioner model before installation, and seal the full perimeter.

Casement windows
A sliding-window panel usually will not seal a crank-operated casement window. Use a model-compatible casement adapter or another installation method approved by the manufacturer. Do not improvise a loose fabric or cardboard seal that can leak, collapse into the hose, or leave the opening unsecured.
Through-wall venting
Some portable air conditioners accept a wall kit. A permanent wall penetration should be planned and installed so it is weather-tight, structurally appropriate, and compatible with the unit’s hose and adapter. Follow the appliance manual and local building requirements; do not vent into a cavity, attic, crawlspace, garage, or another enclosed room.

Does a portable AC have to be by a window?
It needs a route to discharge exhaust outdoors, but that route does not always have to be a conventional window. Depending on the model, the approved outlet may be a sliding-door kit or a manufacturer-specified wall kit. Venting into another room is not an alternative: it merely transfers the heat there and eventually raises the temperature of the rest of the home.
Keep airflow and room boundaries under control
Protect the intake and outlet
Keep curtains, furniture, bedding, boxes, and rugs away from every intake and discharge grille by at least the distance shown in the manual. Do not aim the hot exhaust at a wall or block the cool-air outlet. Leave enough space to remove the filter and drain the unit.

Portable air conditioners are primarily intended for a single room. Close interior doors and windows so the cooled air remains where it is needed. A fan can move some cooled air toward an adjacent area, but doing so reduces the cooling available in the original room and does not turn the appliance into a whole-house system.

Match capacity to the room and heat load
Honeywell’s general ASHRAE sizing bands are a starting point, not a guarantee. Windows, insulation, ceiling height, sunlight, appliances, and the number of occupants can change the required capacity.
| Rated capacity | Honeywell general room range | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 8,000 BTU | 250–350 sq ft | Honeywell, 2026; general ASHRAE guidance |
| 10,000 BTU | 350–450 sq ft | Honeywell, 2026; general ASHRAE guidance |
| 12,000 BTU | 450–550 sq ft | Honeywell, 2026; general ASHRAE guidance |
| 14,000 BTU | 550–700 sq ft | Honeywell, 2026; general ASHRAE guidance |
Check whether the label uses ASHRAE or another rating method, and compare the capacity with the room’s actual heat load rather than relying on floor area alone.
Single-hose versus dual-hose placement
A single-hose unit exhausts room air outdoors through one hose. A dual-hose design uses a separate outdoor-air intake and exhaust path. The choice affects how the unit interacts with the room and the installation opening, so confirm that the window or wall kit supplied for the specific model accommodates all required connections. In either design, the hoses must remain unobstructed and the opening must be sealed.

- Clean the filter at the interval specified in the manual.
- Inspect the intake, outlet, hose, and window adapter for dust or obstructions.
- Check that seals remain tight and that warm air is not leaking around the kit.
- Drain condensate as required by the model. Honeywell notes that high humidity can require manual drainage even when some water normally evaporates through the exhaust hose.
Placement checklist
- Identify the room to be cooled and measure its area and ceiling height.
- Locate an exterior window, sliding-door opening, or approved wall-vent position.
- Confirm that the supplied or compatible kit fits that opening.
- Place the unit level, about 20–40 inches from the outlet when that matches the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Route the hose as short and straight as practical; do not extend or tightly coil it.
- Preserve all grille clearances shown in the manual.
- Seal the window or door kit’s perimeter and close other openings in the room.
- Run the unit briefly and check for secure connections, unobstructed airflow, leaks, and any condensate warning.
When the proposed spot is unsuitable
Choose another location or another installation method if the hose must be excessively long, the window cannot be sealed, the grilles would be blocked, the outlet would discharge into an enclosed space, or the floor cannot support the unit level and stable. A properly sized unit with a short, sealed exhaust route will generally outperform a larger unit installed with restricted airflow or a leaking opening.
