The water filter’s location depends on the Samsung refrigerator model. Check inside the refrigerator first: common spots are the upper-right corner and the area near the crisper drawers. If you do not find it there, consult the manual for your exact model; some refrigerators use an external filter near the water connection.
Common places to look
- Upper-right interior: Look for a filter housing or cover, sometimes marked “LOCK.”
- Near the crisper drawers: Some models place the filter low inside the refrigerator.
- Outside the refrigerator: Certain models use an inline filter near the appliance or water-supply connection. Samsung’s regional guidance documents external filters, but configurations vary by model and market. See Samsung Australia’s replacement guide for its market-specific information.
Samsung Canada likewise says the position varies by model and advises checking the user manual if you are unsure. Its Fridge Water Filter Finder can help you look up information by refrigerator model.
How to confirm the location and the right filter
- Find the refrigerator’s full model number, usually shown on the appliance label, and consult its user manual or model-specific Samsung support information.
- If a cartridge is already installed, check the number printed on it. Samsung Canada’s finder can also use the refrigerator model to identify filter information.
- Match the replacement to the model or installed cartridge number. Samsung lists HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 among its filter types; those names are not interchangeable compatibility guarantees. Do not rely on a listing that only says “fits Samsung.”
Samsung recommends using a Samsung-provided or approved filter. This is manufacturer guidance; confirm the replacement’s compatibility for your specific refrigerator before buying. See Samsung Canada’s replacement guide.
If you need to replace the cartridge
Use the instructions for your refrigerator model if they differ from these general steps. Samsung Canada advises shutting off the water and dispensing water until the flow stops to relieve pressure before removing the filter.

HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN
- Turn the cartridge counterclockwise to unlock it. Depending on the model, the turn may be 90 or 180 degrees.
- Pull the cartridge straight out.
- Insert the compatible replacement straight into the housing and turn it clockwise to lock. Align the LOCK mark with the housing indicator.
HAFCU1
- Twist the cartridge left to unlock it, then pull it down.
- Align the replacement cartridge notch with the housing arrow, push it upward, and turn it right to secure it.
Reset the indicator and flush the new filter
After installation, reset the filter indicator using the control specified in your model’s instructions. Samsung says the control varies; on most models, hold Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water for three seconds. Its Canada guide recommends dispensing water for about seven minutes—roughly 10–12 large glasses—and discarding it after replacement.
Samsung Canada recommends changing the filter every six months. Follow the replacement schedule and indicator guidance for your refrigerator model.
