Cellulose sponges use plant-origin cellulose for the wiping material; many familiar alternatives use polyurethane foam. A scrub sponge may combine either kind of wiping layer with a separate abrasive scrub side, so its label alone does not tell you what the whole product is made of. Cellulose is useful for soaking up water and spills, but it is not automatically more hygienic or more environmentally friendly. Choose by the task, the full product construction, and how you clean and replace it.
What counts as an “other” kitchen sponge?
There is no single material called an “other kitchen sponge.” The common foam type is often made from polyurethane. A two-sided sponge scourer can have a wiping core of polyurethane foam or cellulose, plus a separate scrubbing layer made with synthetic fibres, latex, resins, or abrasive fillers. A cellulose wiping layer therefore does not prove that the whole sponge is plastic-free, recyclable, or compostable.
Check the product’s material description and disposal instructions rather than relying on the word “cellulose” alone.
How do cellulose and polyurethane compare?
Absorbing water and wiping spills
Cellulose is a practical choice when soaking up liquid is the priority. 3M explains that its cellulose sponges have large pores that fill with water; in its “Float Test” comparison, a saturated cellulose sponge sinks while saturated polyurethane foam sponges float. Bacterial counts in one household study
A 2017 household comparison by Gerba, Sifuentes, and Tamimi found that the tested polyurethane sponges had fewer total bacteria, coliforms, and E. coli than the tested cellulose sponges. The authors also modeled an approximately 82–90% lower infection risk for the tested antimicrobial polyurethane sponge than for the tested antimicrobial cellulose sponge, assuming equal pathogenic E. coli levels. These results apply to the products and methods in that study; they do not establish that every polyurethane sponge is safer than every cellulose sponge. The 2017 study in Food Protection Trends
Disinfectant interaction in that study
In the same study, chlorine residual was unchanged after 30 minutes with the tested polyurethane sponges, while the tested cellulose sponges reduced it by 24%. That specific result is not a comparison of all cleaners or sponge formulations. Study details

Are cellulose sponges more hygienic?
Material alone is not a reliable hygiene strategy. In a 29 June 2026 release, Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) reported that pathogens in its tests multiplied in kitchen sponges within a few days, survived several days of drying, and could transfer to other surfaces with light pressure. Appearance and smell were not reliable indicators of contamination. BfR’s 2026 guidance
BfR recommends regular replacement and says to discard a sponge after using it on surfaces that contacted raw meat. It also identifies dish brushes and microfibre cloths as alternatives that dry faster and can be machine cleaned; follow the care instructions for the particular item. For reducing bacterial load, BfR says to treat a sponge with water above 70 °C for at least 2 minutes, and to use programs of at least 60 °C for brushes or microfibre cloths in a dishwasher or washing machine. These are the institute’s recommendations, not a guarantee that any method prevents cross-contamination.

Which sponge or cleaning tool should you choose?

What do compostability and recycling claims mean?
Environmental claims depend on the exact product and its construction. Spontex describes cellulose as plant-origin and says certain named cellulose sponges and sponge cloths are suitable for domestic compost bins. The company also notes that sponge scourers can include synthetic scrub materials and that mixed-material products are usually unsuitable for recycling in existing facilities. These are manufacturer statements, not guarantees that every local composting system will accept a product. Spontex’s cleaning FAQ
3M says its named Scotch-Brite Pop Up Sponge is compostable and claims it absorbs liquid up to 15 times its own weight. Those claims apply to that product, not to cellulose sponges as a category; check the product’s own disposal guidance and what your local composting service accepts. 3M Scotch-Brite Pop Up Sponges
