Manual citrus juicers fall into three useful categories: reamers, handheld squeezers, and countertop lever presses. They differ in how they handle effort, mess, batch size, and storage.

These are comparative findings from Epicurious’s manual citrus juicer testing, published September 7, 2022. The outlet noted that actual juice yield depends on the individual fruit, so the findings do not establish a guaranteed yield for a particular orange or model.
Check that the juicer actually fits your oranges
Do not assume that every citrus juicer handles oranges equally well. Check the manufacturer’s fruit guidance and the size of the juicing surface. Some reamer sets have different sizes for different fruit.

For a reamer
The Oxo Good Grips 2-in-1, as described in Epicurious’s 2022 comparison, includes a larger reamer attachment for grapefruit and orange juice and a collection cup with a capacity of 1.5 cups (350 milliliters). That capacity is a product specification, not a general measure of how much juice a juicer will produce.
For a countertop press
Omcan’s instructions list small oranges among the fruit suitable for its press. Treat that as model-specific guidance: it does not establish that the press suits larger oranges or that other presses share the same fruit range.

Choose by batch size, effort, and storage
- For an occasional glass: A reamer with a cup may make more sense than storing a large press. Check whether the cup holds enough for your usual serving.
- For repeated servings: A countertop press may reduce repetitive hand squeezing, but only if it fits your counter and can be used stably.
- If grip strength is a concern: A lever press offers leverage, while a handheld squeezer relies on hand strength. A reamer is another option, though it involves manually rotating the fruit against the reamer.
- If you want a contained process: A handheld squeezer can limit mess around the tool, but may require more hand strength and may leave juice behind.
- If you have limited storage: Compare the tool’s assembled size and where it will live between uses. Countertop presses are generally harder to store because of their size.
Epicurious’s authors, Emily Farris and Danielle Centoni, describe cleaning as an important part of evaluating citrus juicers: “Citrus juicers, especially handheld ones, shouldn’t require complex disassembly for cleaning.” That is a useful selection principle, not a guarantee that any particular model is easy to clean.
Verify stability and cleaning instructions before buying
A large press needs a stable setup. Follow the placement and securing instructions for the specific model rather than assuming its weight alone will keep it in place. Omcan’s guidance is one example of manufacturer instructions that should be checked for the exact press and fruit being used.

Cleaning requirements also vary by model. HENDI says the BarUp press cup, juicing cup, and strainer are removable and dishwasher-safe. Omcan says its removable stainless-steel funnel should be washed by hand and that the machine is not dishwasher-safe. These are model-specific care instructions; do not generalize them to other presses or juicers.

- Which parts touch the juice, and how does the manufacturer say to clean them?
