For washable clothes, lift off cranberry sauce, flush fresh stains with cool water, then soak in a cool-water mix of laundry pre-treater and detergent for 15–30 minutes. Blot cranberry from carpet and use a carpet-labeled cleaner. For upholstered furniture, check its cleaning code before using water or any product: some fabrics require water-free solvent.
Remove cranberry stains from washable clothes
Cranberry juice and sauce are berry stains. Treat them promptly, and follow the garment’s care label and the directions on each cleaning product.
- Remove excess sauce. Gently lift or scrape it away without pressing it deeper into the fabric.
- Flush fresh stains with cool water. Hold the stained area under cool running water to carry away some of the residue.
- Soak the garment. Mix 1 tablespoon of laundry pre-treater with ½ teaspoon of liquid laundry or dish detergent in 1 quart of cool water. Soak for 15–30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water. These amounts and timings come from the American Cleaning Institute’s berry-stain instructions, which explicitly include cranberries: ACI berry-stain guide.
- Escalate only if the stain remains. Sponge the residue with rubbing alcohol and rinse thoroughly. If it is still visible, soak the garment for 30 minutes in 1 quart of warm water mixed with 1 tablespoon of enzyme presoak product.
- Launder and check before drying. Wash with regular detergent using the warmest water safe for the fabric. Use chlorine or oxygen bleach only if the garment label permits it.
Do not put the garment in the dryer while the stain is visible; heat can set remaining residue. If needed, repeat a compatible treatment and wash again. ACI’s general stain guidance advises keeping stained items out of the dryer until the stain is gone: ACI stain-removal guide.
These steps are for washable garments. For dry-clean-only, delicate, or non-washable items, follow the care label or ask a professional cleaner rather than applying the soak.

Remove cranberry from carpet
- Blot up the spill. Use a clean white absorbent cloth or paper towel, working from the outside toward the center. Dab; do not rub or scrub, which can push the stain into the fibers.
- Use a carpet-safe product. Apply a cleaner labeled for carpet, following its directions and the carpet maker’s care guidance. A laundry stain remover is suitable only if its label specifically permits carpet use. The American Cleaning Institute recommends prompt treatment with carpet cleaner and dabbing rather than rubbing: ACI carpet and rug guidance and ACI: Carpet and Rug Cleaning.
- Follow the installed carpet’s instructions. Carpet fibers and treatments differ, so do not assume a chemical method is safe for every carpet. Beaulieu’s manufacturer guide lists cranberry juice and begins its method with blotting excess, then applying lukewarm water to a clean white towel and blotting after a one-minute wait. Use that or any further steps only if they match your carpet’s own care instructions: Beaulieu carpet-care guide.
Remove cranberry from upholstered furniture
- Blot, don’t rub. Lift excess liquid with a clean cloth. Avoid saturating the fabric.
- Find the furniture’s cleaning code. Check the manufacturer’s care instructions or the tag before applying water or cleaner. Cleaning codes are not interchangeable.
- Use only a compatible method. La-Z-Boy describes code W as allowing water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner, used sparingly after a hidden-area test. Code S calls for water-free dry-cleaning solvent and says not to use water. Follow your furniture maker’s directions, which may differ: La-Z-Boy upholstery-cleaning guidance.
- Test before treating the stain. Try the compatible product on a hidden area and stop if color transfers or the fabric changes. FabricLink’s cranberry-specific guidance suggests minimal water and repeated soak-and-blot cycles, but also directs readers to follow the upholstery maker’s instructions; its suggested peroxide/ammonia step is not a universal treatment: FabricLink cranberry-juice stain guide.
Do not use a water-based treatment on code S or X fabric. If the code is missing or unclear, the fabric is delicate, a hidden-area test transfers color, or a compatible mild method does not remove the stain, stop and contact the furniture maker or a professional upholstery cleaner.
