What’s Eating Your Plants? How to Identify the Cause and Respond

Holes, ragged edges, skeletonized leaves, and missing stems offer clues—but not certainty. Use the damage pattern and confirming signs to narrow down what is eating your plants.

Holes in leaves or missing shoots can point to insects, slugs, rabbits, or deer—but a hole alone rarely identifies the culprit. Look at the damage pattern, inspect for confirming signs, and check after dark before choosing a response. The plant, your location, and the timing all help narrow the possibilities.

Start with the damage pattern

Compare where and how the plant has been eaten, not just whether it has holes. The clues below suggest likely causes; they are not proof, because different feeders can leave similar damage. University of Minnesota Extension describes these patterns in its guide to holes and chewing on leaves.

Damage clue Likely possibilities What to check next
Cleanly cut stems or leaves near ground level, with damage appearing suddenly Rabbit Look for tracks and droppings. Rabbit cuts tend to be clean rather than ragged.
Ragged tearing, larger portions missing, or browsing higher on the plant Deer Look for tracks and oblong droppings; deer can browse well above ground level.
Irregular holes that cross leaf veins, sometimes with a shiny trail Slugs Inspect damp, sheltered areas and check after dark for slugs or slime residue.
Leaf tissue eaten between veins, leaving a lace-like skeleton Japanese beetles Look for metallic green adults with copper-brown wing covers during their local active period.
Ragged holes or notched leaf edges, often with nighttime feeding Earwigs, caterpillars, beetles, or other chewing insects Check leaf undersides and daytime hiding places for larvae, adults, frass, or webbing.
Wilting or plant damage with no visible feeder Root feeding or a non-chewing problem are among several possibilities Identify the plant and inspect roots and soil as appropriate; seek local Extension advice rather than assuming a leaf-chewing pest.

UMass Extension’s “What’s Eating My Vegetables?” also emphasizes that chewing can range from small holes to large portions removed, and that animal signs can help distinguish wildlife browsing. Deer and rabbit damage can be confused, so consider the height and character of the missing material along with tracks and droppings.

Inspect for evidence before acting

Take a photo of the whole plant and close-ups of the damage. Note when it appeared and whether it is spreading. Then inspect both leaf surfaces and the places where leaves meet stems. Look for eggs, larvae, adults, small dark droppings, webbing, and other signs that connect a suspected feeder to the plant.

Check at dusk or after dark with a flashlight. Several likely chewing insects and slugs feed at night and hide during the day, as Maryland Extension and Michigan State University Extension note. Also look at the soil and nearby sheltered spots for slime, tracks, droppings, and daytime hiding places.

If the culprit is still elusive, Michigan State University Extension describes simple monitoring approaches: a sticky-tape loop at a leaf-stem junction, a small cup of sweet liquid, or damp cardboard checked in the morning. These are diagnostic suggestions from an Extension response, not universal pest-control methods. Use them to gather clues, not as a substitute for identifying the pest.

Choose a response that fits the likely cause

For a visible insect or slug

Hand-pick and remove the feeder where practical. Maryland Extension suggests knocking some beetles into soapy water; an MSU Extension response also describes hand-picking and soapy water for home vegetable gardens. Check the plant again to see whether fresh damage continues.

For minor damage on an established perennial

Monitoring may be enough. Maryland Extension notes that many leaf-feeding insects are temporary, and established perennials may tolerate damage or outgrow it. Consider the plant’s condition and whether new damage is continuing rather than treating every chewed leaf as an emergency.

For plants that attract pollinators or serve as native host plants

Do not default to insecticide. Maryland Extension warns that sprays can harm other insects, including beneficial species. If a treatment seems necessary, first identify the pest and consult current local Extension guidance and the product label.

For likely insect feeding on a crop

A correctly chosen insect net or floating row cover may act as a physical barrier. Identify the likely pest and crop first, then check whether the crop needs pollinator access and whether the mesh and installation suit the situation. Insect netting is intended to exclude insects; it is not a substitute for fencing against wildlife.

For rabbits or deer

Use a wildlife barrier designed for the animal rather than insect netting. An Associated Press gardening feature describes rabbit fencing with small mesh and a buried lower edge, and taller or angled fencing for deer. The right setup depends on the property and local conditions, so those examples should not be treated as one-size-fits-all specifications.

Refine the identification locally

Many pests produce similar holes, and which species are active varies with plant, season, and location. Once you have a likely culprit, compare your photos and observations with a regional Extension resource for that plant and pest. If there is no clear chewing evidence, ask for local diagnosis before choosing a treatment; wilting or decline alone does not establish that an animal or insect is eating the plant.
