Before buying, check the selected model’s installation guide and confirm local make-up-air requirements; no single CFM figure is right for every kitchen.
A hood at least as wide as the cooktop is a sensible starting point. Broan-NuTone’s sizing guide recommends a hood 48 inches or larger for a 48-inch cooktop, while its guidance and Thermador’s planning guide make clear that airflow depends on factors including cooktop type, cooking intensity, and duct design. Compare complete installations rather than choosing by headline CFM alone.
Start With the Range and Kitchen Layout
Identify the range or cooktop and its manufacturer’s ventilation recommendations before choosing a hood. Consider the appliance’s fuel and output, how often you cook at high heat, whether you use a griddle or grill, whether the hood is on a wall or over an island, and the route to an outdoor termination.
There is no universal CFM target for every 48-inch range. Thermador identifies range BTU as an important planning input, while Broan also highlights cooktop type, cooking intensity, hood width, and duct design. Use those factors with the selected hood’s current documentation and, where needed, advice from a qualified installer.

Compare 48-Inch Hood Options
Models with the same width can have different airflow ratings, duct requirements, and noise specifications. The figures below are manufacturer-listed examples, not independent test results or a ranking.
| Manufacturer example | Listed airflow | Other listed specification |
|---|---|---|
| Dacor DHD48U990WM/DA | 1,200 CFM; convertible to 780 CFM | 48-inch chimney wall hood; four speeds |
| GE Appliances UVW9484SPSS | 820 CFM | 11.0 sones at boost; 10-inch duct required |
| Bertazzoni 48-inch wall-mount example | 600 CFM | 6-inch duct listed |
| Vent-A-Hood 48-inch configurations | Examples include 600, 900, and 1,200 CFM | Check the selected model’s specifications; some figures are described by the manufacturer as equivalent airflow |

Choose the Hood Type and Capture Area
Wall-mounted hoods
Wall-mounted canopy hoods are a common choice for ranges against a wall. Check the hood’s width and depth against the cooktop and follow the specified mounting height. Added capture area may help, but the right size and placement depend on the installation and cooking pattern.
Under-cabinet hoods and inserts
Under-cabinet models fit below cabinetry, while inserts or liners are installed inside a custom hood surround. Confirm dimensions, clearances, filter access, duct connection, and service access against the exact model’s documentation before cabinets or a surround are fabricated.

Island hoods
An island installation is exposed to cross drafts and differs from a wall installation. Compare capture area, airflow, and installation requirements for the intended location rather than assuming a wall-mounted model will perform the same way over an island.

Ducted and recirculating models
Check whether the chosen model exhausts outdoors or is configured to recirculate air. These are different arrangements; confirm what the model and configuration are designed to do, and whether they suit the range and local requirements.
How to Choose the Right Power for a Range Hood
Airflow ratings are useful for comparing models, but they do not by themselves predict capture in a particular kitchen. Compare the blower configuration and listed airflow alongside hood position and capture area, duct diameter and route, termination, and noise at the speeds you expect to use.
Manufacturer examples illustrate why model-specific checking matters: Vent-A-Hood lists 48-inch configurations at several airflow ratings, while the cited GE model lists 820 CFM and the cited Bertazzoni model lists 600 CFM. These figures are not directly comparable performance tests. Check how the manufacturer describes the rating, including whether an “equivalent” figure is being used.
Ducting and Exterior Termination
Follow the chosen hood’s installation guide for duct diameter, allowable route and elbows, termination, clearances, and blower arrangement. Requirements vary by model: the cited GE model specifies a 10-inch duct, while the cited Bertazzoni example lists a 6-inch duct. Do not reduce a specified duct size unless the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
Broan-NuTone says range hoods must use metal duct and prefers smooth metal to flexible metal because ridges can create turbulence and reduce airflow. It also says not to use dryer duct or plastic duct. Have the installer verify the outdoor termination and other installation details for the selected model and home.

Check Make-Up Air Rules Locally
Exhausting indoor air outdoors can affect pressure in a home, particularly where other combustion equipment is present. Broan reproduces model-code language calling for make-up air for systems capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM, but also warns that states and cities may amend the threshold. Treat 400 CFM as a code reference, not a universal local rule.
Before purchase, identify the locally adopted code and amendments and ask the local building department or mechanical inspector what applies. Have the installer consider the selected hood’s applicable airflow rating, the home, and any other combustion equipment.

Compare noise ratings at similar operating speeds where manufacturers provide them, especially at the speed you expect to use. For example, GE lists 11.0 sones at boost for the cited model; that is a model-specific figure, not a general rating for 48-inch hoods.
Also check filter access, lighting, controls, parts availability, and the hood’s listing and installation instructions. For an insert or custom enclosure, confirm the exact dimensions and clearances before building the surround.

Common Buying Mistakes
- Choosing by CFM alone without checking capture area, ducting, and installation location.
- Assuming every 48-inch hood has the same duct requirement or performance.
- Reducing a specified duct size without the manufacturer’s approval.
- Using flexible, plastic, or dryer duct where the hood instructions require metal duct.
- Treating the model-code 400 CFM make-up-air reference as a universal local requirement.
- Ordering cabinets or a custom surround before confirming the selected hood’s dimensions and clearances.
- Comparing noise ratings that refer to different operating speeds.
Practical Recommendation
Start with a hood at least as wide as the 48-inch cooktop, then compare appropriate models for capture area, listed airflow and blower configuration, duct requirements, noise, and make-up-air implications. Match the final choice to the exact range and installation, and confirm the current documentation and local rules before ordering.

FAQ
How much CFM do you need for a range hood?
There is no universal CFM figure for every 48-inch range. Consider the range, cooking intensity, mounting position, capture area, and duct design, then check the selected hood’s specifications and the range maker’s recommendations.
Should a hood be wider than a 48-inch cooktop?
Broan-NuTone’s guide recommends a hood 48 inches or larger for a 48-inch cooktop. A 48-inch hood is a starting point; whether additional capture area is useful depends on the installation and cooking.
Does a 48-inch range hood need make-up air?
Broan reproduces model-code language concerning systems capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM, but says local amendments vary. Check the locally adopted rules with the relevant authority before choosing a hood.
What duct size should I use for a 48-inch hood?
Use the size specified in the selected model’s current installation guide. Requirements vary: the cited GE example specifies a 10-inch duct, while the cited Bertazzoni example lists a 6-inch duct.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How should I compare range-hood noise?
Compare manufacturer noise ratings at comparable operating speeds and focus on speeds you expect to use. The cited GE model’s 11.0 sones rating is specifically listed at boost, not as a rating for all 48-inch hoods.
