You can deep clean a house in one day if the home is reasonably manageable, you prepare first, and you treat the schedule as flexible—not a promise. The job takes longer when there is more clutter, more rooms, or a long backlog of buildup. For a larger or overdue clean, use the same order over a weekend or focus on the rooms and tasks that matter most.

What counts as a deep clean?

Routine cleaning deals with visible, recurring dirt. A deep clean also tackles neglected buildup and areas that are easy to miss: light fixtures, window and door frames, walls and baseboards, upholstery, cabinet interiors, appliances, grout, and accessible spaces behind furniture.

That scope is why preparation and sequence matter. Marla Mock, president at Molly Maid, a Neighborly company, recommends working high to low: “This approach helps guarantee that no spots are missed and prevents dirt from settling on areas that have already been cleaned.” Stephanie Phillips, owner of Phillips Commercial and Residential Cleaning Services, advises: “The easiest way to deep clean your home is to tackle it one room at a time.”

What to do before you start

  1. Clear clutter. Pick up belongings and clear the work surfaces you need to reach. Tidying before detail cleaning makes the rooms easier to clean.
  2. Start laundry. Wash towels or linens that you can replace when the rooms are finished.
  3. Stage supplies. Gather microfiber cloths, soft-bristle or detail brushes, gloves, a vacuum, broom, mop, and bucket. Add only the cleaners suited to the surfaces in your home.
  4. Check product labels. Follow each cleaner’s directions for use and dwell time. Keep products, particularly harsh cleaners such as bleach or ammonia, out of reach of children and pets. Never mix cleaning products.
  5. Set priorities. Decide which rooms and neglected tasks matter most. If time is tight, leave optional jobs such as carpet extraction for another day.

One expert guide lists all-purpose, glass, grout, countertop, and appliance cleaners, along with baking soda, vinegar, water, and laundry detergent. That is a supply checklist, not a direction to use every product or homemade mixture on every surface. Match the cleaner to the material and follow its label.

What order should you clean the house in?

Work from high to low within each room, and finish with the floor. Dust and debris fall as you clean, so doing floors last keeps you from having to redo them. Move room by room rather than bouncing between unfinished tasks.

  1. Bathroom: Move toiletries out of the way. Clean high fixtures, then treat grout if needed with a product made for it, observing the label’s dwell time. Scrub the sink, tub, and toilet; clean the mirror; then vacuum or sweep and mop. One published schedule gives grout cleaner 20 minutes to sit as an example, but the label on your product—not that example—sets the correct time.
  2. Bedrooms: Dust ceiling fans and the tops of windows and doors, then work down across furniture. Wash bedding and attend to mattresses, mirrors, and windows as appropriate. Vacuum or mop last.
  3. Kitchen: Clear counters; if time allows, empty cabinets or drawers before cleaning their interiors. Wipe cabinets and counters with compatible products, clean appliance interiors and exteriors, and finish with the floor. Give food-preparation surfaces particular attention.
  4. Dining room, living room, and circulation areas: Dust fixtures and high surfaces before tables and furniture. Clean windows and window treatments according to their care instructions. Spot-clean walls, doors, baseboards, and high-touch points; vacuum upholstery and floors.
  5. Final pass: Walk through the rooms, return dry or washable items, and check for unfinished tasks—especially on surfaces used to prepare food.

How to adapt the one-day schedule

Martha Stewart’s April 24, 2026 example starts with the bathroom at 9 a.m., bedrooms at 10 a.m., the kitchen at noon, the dining room at 2 p.m., and the living room at 3 p.m. It allows about two hours for a bedroom and about two hours for the kitchen. Those are planning estimates in an editorial schedule, not measured performance results or times every household can meet; the guide says to modify the timeline for the home’s layout.

Use the sequence as a framework, then adjust the blocks to fit your rooms and the amount of buildup. The kitchen block is especially easy to expand if you plan to empty cabinets or clean appliance interiors; Lauren Doss, owner of Nashville Maids, is the contributor associated with the kitchen time suggestion. For the bathroom, Paulo Filho, owner of Celestial Cleaning Service, advises setting up a workable space before cleaning.

  • A compact, maintained home: Try the full room sequence in a day, allowing extra time for rooms with more detail work.
  • A larger home or one with significant clutter: Clear clutter first and expect the work to run into a second day. A manufacturer’s guide likewise notes that a deep clean may take one day or a weekend depending on the work.
  • Limited time: Prioritize the bathroom, kitchen, and high-touch areas, then tackle less urgent details—such as cabinet interiors or upholstery—later.
  • Working alone: Keep supplies nearby and complete one room before moving on. If the workload does not fit your available time, consider spreading it out or hiring help.

Which supplies are useful?

Choose tools for the task rather than buying a particular brand. Microfiber cloths are a practical general option; soft-bristle or detail brushes help with crevices and grout. Use a vacuum for floors and upholstery, and a broom, mop, and bucket for hard floors as appropriate. Keep surface-specific cleaners limited to the materials that need them.
