If tree roots are showing through your lawn, stop mowing directly over them and cover the affected area with a moderate layer of wood-chip or shredded-wood mulch. Do not cut, grind, or bury the roots under deep soil. Surface roots are common, and their presence alone does not mean the tree is failing.
Why tree roots appear at the surface
Tree roots commonly spread through upper soil layers, where oxygen is available. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension reports that most tree roots grow within the top 4–15 inches of soil; that range is not a universal measurement for every tree or site. Compacted or poorly drained soil, low oxygen, erosion, and the tree’s species and age can all contribute to visible roots. Colorado State University Extension also connects shallow root development with low soil oxygen, including conditions associated with compaction or overwatering.
Exposed roots are living parts of the tree’s root system, not disposable obstacles. They can be damaged by mower blades, repeated foot traffic, and careless planting.
Mulch the area instead of mowing over roots
For most yards, the simplest approach is to remove the turf around the exposed roots and use plain wood-chip or shredded-wood mulch. Purdue University Extension recommends 2–3 inches of wood mulch; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives a range of 2–4 inches for wood-chip or shredded-bark mulch. These are source-specific recommendations, not a single depth established as ideal for every site.

When a little soil can help—and when it can harm
A light soil topdressing may smooth small gaps temporarily. Wisconsin Extension advises using just enough soil to cover roots by about half an inch. Roots continue to thicken, however, so they may become visible again.

More soil is not a durable fix. Excessive fill can reduce oxygen around roots and harm the tree. Iowa State says a 1–2-inch covering is temporary and warns that 4 or more inches may damage a tree. Do not add a deep layer of soil to level the yard over exposed roots.
Planting groundcover or perennials around roots
Groundcover or perennials can replace turf beneath a tree, but plant with care. Dig small pockets by hand between roots, avoid cutting roots, and do not rototill the area. Skip thick soil fill before planting; it can reduce the oxygen available to roots.

Why you should not cut or grind exposed roots
Cutting or grinding roots just to make mowing easier can injure the tree and may affect its stability. Do not treat root removal as a routine lawn repair. If roots are lifting pavement or you are concerned about the tree’s stability, ask a qualified arborist to assess the tree and the specific roots before work begins.

Choose an approach for the problem
| Option | Best use | Limit or caution |
|---|---|---|
| Wood-chip or shredded-wood mulch | Protects the soil surface and avoids mowing directly over roots. Purdue recommends 2–3 inches; Iowa State recommends 2–4 inches. | Keep it off the trunk and avoid deep mounding. Recommendations vary by source; neither establishes one ideal depth for every site. |
| Light soil topdressing | Temporarily smooths small gaps; Wisconsin advises about half an inch of soil over roots. | Roots may reappear as they grow. Excess soil can reduce oxygen; Iowa State warns that 4 or more inches may damage a tree. |
| Groundcover or perennials | Replaces difficult-to-maintain turf beneath a tree. | Plant in small hand-dug pockets between roots; avoid tilling and thick soil fill. |
| Cutting or grinding roots | Not a routine solution for lawn appearance or mowing convenience. | Root injury can harm tree health and may affect stability. Seek qualified arborist advice when roots conflict with pavement or tree safety is in question. |
