A momentary switch changes an electrical circuit only while you press or hold its actuator. Release the button and an internal spring or return mechanism restores the contacts to their normal state. A doorbell, reset button and many starter buttons work this way.
Momentary describes the switch’s operating action—not whether its contacts are normally open or normally closed. The same momentary mechanism can be supplied as NO, NC or changeover (SPDT), so selection depends on both the required circuit behavior and the installation conditions.
How a momentary switch works
In a simple circuit, a switch either interrupts an electrical path (open circuit) or completes it (closed circuit). Pressing a momentary switch moves its contacts, changes that path and, when released, allows the return mechanism to reset it. TE Connectivity describes pushbutton switches and their applications at its pushbutton-switch resource.
Normally open example
Battery positive — Load — Momentary NO switch — Battery negative
- Released: contacts are open and the load is off.
- Pressed: contacts close and the load operates.
- Released again: the circuit opens without a separate off command.
Normally closed example
Battery positive — Load — Momentary NC switch — Battery negative
- Released: contacts are closed and the load is on.
- Pressed: contacts open and the load turns off.
These are low-voltage illustrations only. The supply, wiring, load and switch must all be rated for the actual application.

Momentary versus maintained or latching switches
| Feature | Momentary | Maintained or latching |
|---|---|---|
| State after release | Returns automatically to its resting state | Remains in the selected state |
| Typical action | Hold to operate | Press, toggle or turn to change state |
| Examples | Doorbell, reset, keyboard key, horn | Light toggle, selector or mode switch |
| Mechanism | Spring return or self-resetting action | Detent, latch or holding mechanism |
Omron distinguishes self-resetting momentary operation from alternate operation that holds its position: Omron’s switch-features guide. A momentary button can nevertheless leave equipment running when it controls a latching relay, flip-flop, motor controller or software state. The switch resets; the surrounding system supplies the memory.
Normally open, normally closed and changeover contacts
“Normal” means the specified, unactuated resting condition of the contacts. Schneider Electric defines NO and NC contact behavior in its FAQ at FA238772.
| Configuration | Released | Pressed | Common uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Momentary NO | Open | Closed | Doorbells, start inputs, horns, triggers |
| Momentary NC | Closed | Open | Stop inputs, alarm loops, interlocks, tamper circuits |
| Momentary SPDT | COM connected to one throw | COM transfers to the other throw | Changeover logic or selecting between two paths |
Momentary and NO/NC are separate descriptions. Carling Technologies’ function guide (basic circuit function) likewise covers momentary switches in NO, NC and other contact arrangements.

DPST and DPDT
Double-pole versions switch two circuits together; DPDT versions provide changeover paths for both poles. Pole/throw terminology describes the contact arrangement, not whether the actuator is momentary. An SPDT switch can be momentary or maintained.
Physical styles and applications
Momentary is a function, not a particular shape. Available forms include PCB tactile buttons, panel pushbuttons, illuminated and anti-vandal metal buttons, key switches, plungers, roller or lever switches, foot switches and spring-return automotive or marine controls. Omron explains that pushbutton assemblies typically combine an operating part, mounting parts, a switch unit and a case; illuminated models add a light source.
Common applications include doorbells, calculator and keyboard keys, refrigerator-light switches, reset and test buttons, horns, alarms, control panels and industrial equipment. TE lists these and other transportation, manufacturing and test uses at its product overview.
Actuator choice affects force, travel, feedback and accidental-operation risk. Flat or raised buttons, mushroom heads, guards, keys, levers and rollers suit different users, access conditions and glove requirements.
Emergency-stop qualification
Do not classify every emergency-stop device as momentary. Many emergency stops mechanically latch when pressed and require deliberate resetting. A regular NC pushbutton is not automatically a safety device; emergency-stop suitability requires the complete, safety-engineered control system and applicable standards.

Momentary switches in electronics and microcontrollers
A button connected to a digital input normally needs a defined logic state, commonly through an internal or external pull-up or pull-down resistor. Without one, the input can float and change unpredictably. Keep the input within the controller’s voltage limits.
Contact bounce
Mechanical contacts can make and break rapidly for a short time during pressing or releasing. A microcontroller may interpret that bounce as several presses. Hardware RC filtering, a Schmitt-trigger input, a debounce IC or software state-based debounce can solve it; the suitable timing depends on the switch and application.

A momentary switch does not inherently generate a fixed-width pulse. Use a timer, one-shot, relay module or software timing when a precise pulse is required.
How to choose the right momentary switch
- Choose the action: select momentary when the command should exist only while actuated; select maintained when the physical control must retain a mode.
- Select contacts: decide NO, NC or SPDT, then verify pole/throw count, terminal arrangement and whether COM is identified.
- Check electrical ratings: confirm maximum voltage and current for the actual AC or DC circuit, load type, switching frequency and duty. Motors, solenoids, lamps and capacitive loads can have inrush or arcing that makes a generic current label inadequate.
- Check signal suitability: for a logic input, verify minimum switching current, contact resistance and low-level reliability—not merely a headline 12 V rating.
- Match mechanics: confirm panel cutout or PCB footprint, body depth, mounting thread, terminal orientation, actuator travel, operating force and expected press frequency.
- Check life ratings: distinguish mechanical cycles from electrical life under your load. A product’s published life applies only under its stated conditions.
- Match the environment: consider dust, water, IP rating, temperature, vibration, shock, corrosion, UV, chemicals and outdoor or marine exposure. TE’s sealed and IP-rated families, for example, are product-specific; installation conditions determine actual protection.
- Evaluate the interface: choose illumination, color, tactile or audible feedback, guarding and accessibility appropriate to the operator.
For context, a Littelfuse 90036-02 example is listed as SPST, normally open, 12 V and 35 A continuous, with spring return; those figures apply to that exact model and conditions, not to momentary switches generally (product page). Littelfuse’s 9095-BX is listed as a normally open, 12 VDC, 20 A momentary push-pull switch with two screw terminals (product page). Use such specifications only after confirming the exact load and installation.
Wiring and testing basics
- Disconnect power and verify that the circuit is de-energized before examining terminals.
- Read the datasheet for COM, NO and NC identification; do not infer terminal functions from physical position or wire color.
- With the switch isolated, set a multimeter to continuity or resistance mode.
- Measure each relevant pair released, then pressed. The pair that changes state identifies the contacts; record COM/NO/NC before wiring.
- Reconnect only after checking polarity, insulation, strain relief and ratings. Keep beginner tests to safe low-voltage circuits.
An illuminated switch may have separate LED terminals, a required polarity and a resistor or specified supply. Its lamp circuit and switching contacts can have different ratings.

Common problems and their causes
“The device stays on after I release the button”
The switch may be driving a latching relay, controller memory, flip-flop or software state. That is system behavior, not proof that the switch is maintained.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The button works backward”
Possible causes include using NC instead of NO, wiring COM to the wrong throw, an active-low input or software that defines a low level as pressed.
“It works on the meter but not in the equipment”
The real load may exceed the rating, have high inrush, require a DC rating, or demand signal-level contacts. Floating logic inputs, poor crimps and loose terminals are also common.
“One press registers several presses”
That is usually contact bounce. Add suitable hardware or software debounce rather than assuming the switch is defective.
“It fails after repeated use”
Check mechanical and electrical life, inductive arcing, current and voltage, vibration, moisture, contamination and whether actuator travel or force matches the design.

Safety boundaries
Momentary operation does not make a component safe for every use. For mains wiring, isolate and verify the circuit, use components and enclosures rated for the installation, follow local electrical codes and involve a qualified electrician where required. For hazardous machinery, guarding, emergency stops and life-critical controls, use the specified safety-rated device and validated control architecture. An NC contact by itself is not a complete fail-safe design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a pushbutton the same as a momentary switch?
A pushbutton describes the actuator style. Many pushbuttons are momentary, but pushbuttons can also use maintained or latching mechanisms.
Can a momentary switch stay on?
The switch returns to its resting contact state when released. A relay, controller or software can nevertheless keep the controlled equipment on.
What do COM, NO and NC mean?
COM is the common terminal; NO is connected to COM when actuated (for a momentary changeover switch); NC is connected to COM at rest and opens when actuated.
