Birmingham City’s proposed new stadium is not an AI-designed building. AI imagery may have imagined a futuristic, industrial landmark, but the club’s released concept is the work of Heatherwick Studio and MANICA Architecture, created in collaboration with Birmingham supporter Steven Knight.
The design unveiled on 20 November 2025 is for an approximately 62,000-capacity stadium in Bordesley Green. It features 12 chimney-like towers, a steep football bowl, a retractable roof and a movable pitch. It is intended to anchor the wider Birmingham Sports Quarter, with opening targeted around the 2030–31 football season.

The November 20 reveal has already happened
The original speculation centred on the design reveal held in Digbeth on Thursday, 20 November 2025, marking Birmingham City’s 150th anniversary. The stadium was presented under the working name Birmingham City Powerhouse Stadium. That name may change if naming rights are agreed.
The announcement was significant because the project is much larger than a replacement football ground. The proposed stadium would form the centrepiece of a wider sports, culture and entertainment development in East Birmingham.

What the official stadium is supposed to look like
The released concept has a rounded, almost circular overall form rather than the conventional rectangular profile of many modern grounds. Its most recognisable feature is a ring of 12 tall towers that resemble industrial chimneys.
Those towers are intended to reference Birmingham’s manufacturing, engineering and brickmaking heritage. As a result, the visual language is deliberately industrial and civic: more steelworks and chimneys than anonymous glass-and-steel “spaceship” architecture.

The stated aim is to bring supporters close to the pitch and create a continuous wall of fans around the playing area. Project descriptions have promoted the building as a major landmark visible across the city, with some reports attributing a possible visibility distance of up to 40 miles to the club and project team. That is a promotional claim, not an independently verified measurement.

What is planned inside the ground?
- Approximately 62,000 seats: the proposed capacity would make the stadium one of the largest football venues in England.
- Retractable roof: contemporary reports said the roof could open or close in about 20 minutes. This remains an announced design specification rather than a completed engineering system.
- Movable pitch: the playing surface is intended to move, helping the venue host multiple types of events while protecting the football surface.
- Multi-use operation: the concept is intended for Birmingham City matches, rugby, NFL-style events, concerts and other major entertainment events.
- Hospitality and visitor attractions: project descriptions include a proposed highest bar in Birmingham within one of the towers.
The football-first design is important. Although the stadium is intended to operate throughout the year, the steep bowl and emphasis on supporter proximity suggest that matchday atmosphere is central to the concept rather than an afterthought.
However, these are features of a proposed project. Final engineering details, operating arrangements and the exact event programme may change during planning, detailed design and construction.
What might the AI image have shown?
Without the original image, prompt and model being identified, it is not possible to say precisely how the AI visualisation was created. It would be misleading to claim that ChatGPT, Midjourney, Gemini or another particular system produced it without a source confirming that detail.
An AI-generated interpretation of the project might reasonably include:

- a futuristic stadium silhouette dominating the Birmingham skyline;
- tall chimney-like towers or factory structures;
- an illuminated or partly enclosed roof;
- a dense, steep seating bowl;
- brick, smoke, steel and other industrial imagery;
- Birmingham City’s blue-and-white colours; and
- a dramatic landmark atmosphere.
Those themes would not necessarily demonstrate that AI predicted the official design. They could simply reflect public discussion of Birmingham’s industrial identity, pre-release descriptions, fan expectations or wording included in the prompt.
AI speculation versus the announced proposal
| Feature | AI imagery may suggest | Officially announced position |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial identity | Chimneys, smoke, brick, steel or factory-inspired detailing | Confirmed through 12 chimney-form towers referencing Birmingham’s industrial heritage |
| Scale | A huge skyline landmark | Approximately 62,000 planned seats |
| Roof | A dramatic futuristic or enclosed roof | A retractable roof is part of the concept |
| Pitch | Usually impossible to establish from an exterior image | A movable pitch has been announced |
| Location | An urban skyline or generic city setting | Bordesley Green in East Birmingham |
| Interior atmosphere | Intense lighting, packed stands and exaggerated hospitality areas | A steep bowl and close supporter proximity are stated design aims |
| Buildability | An image can make complex structures look effortless | The project remains a proposal requiring further planning, engineering and delivery stages |
The strongest apparent similarities are therefore visual rather than predictive. If an AI image showed industrial towers and a monumental stadium, it may have captured the mood of the brief. It does not prove that the system independently anticipated the architects’ work.
Where will Birmingham City’s new stadium be built?
The proposed site is in Bordesley Green, East Birmingham, less than a mile from the club’s current St Andrew’s ground according to contemporary reporting. The new venue is planned as part of the Birmingham Sports Quarter, rather than as an isolated stadium development.

This wider context explains the scale of the proposal. A 62,000-seat venue with a retractable roof and movable pitch is being presented as a year-round sports, culture and entertainment destination, not simply as a larger home fixture venue.

Architectural renderings show design intent, not a finished building. The released images should not be treated as construction photographs or as proof that every visible detail has been fixed.
Important points remain subject to future stages:
- planning consent and any conditions attached to it;
- detailed structural and mechanical design;
- final cost and funding arrangements;
- transport, access and matchday logistics;
- the construction timetable;
- the final stadium name and any naming-rights agreement; and
- the confirmed opening date.
Reports have referred to a stadium cost of approximately £1.2 billion and a wider Sports Quarter value or investment figure of more than £3 billion. These should be treated as reported or projected figures, not final audited costs.

So, did AI get Birmingham City’s stadium right?
Only in the broadest visual sense. AI may have anticipated the project’s industrial, futuristic and monumental mood, particularly if its image featured towers, a dramatic roof or a stadium dominating the skyline.
The reliable description comes from the official proposal: a roughly 62,000-capacity football stadium in Bordesley Green, designed by Heatherwick Studio and MANICA Architecture, with 12 industrial-style towers, a steep bowl, a retractable roof and a movable pitch.
AI imagery can also introduce impossible roof mechanics, duplicated spectators, distorted seating, nonsensical entrances and structural details that would not survive engineering review. It is useful as visual speculation, but it cannot establish capacity, construction feasibility, cost, planning status or delivery dates.
