Google ended support on October 25, 2025, for three early Nest Learning Thermostat models: the 1st-generation model, the 2nd-generation model, and the 2nd-generation Europe version. Those thermostats were removed from the Nest and Google Home apps and lost cloud-connected features such as remote control, notifications, voice-assistant control, Home/Away Assist, and Nest Protect thermostat integration.
This does not mean every older Nest thermostat has stopped working, and it does not necessarily mean the heating or cooling equipment immediately stops operating. First identify your exact model, then test its local controls and decide whether local-only operation is acceptable for your home.

How to identify your Nest thermostat
Do not rely on the fact that the thermostat is round. Several Nest generations use a similar circular design.
- Check the model information in the Nest app, if the thermostat is still listed.
- Look at the original packaging, purchase record, or installation paperwork.
- Compare the physical design and display with Google’s model-identification guidance.
- Check the Google Home app as well as the Nest app, but remember that an affected thermostat may have been removed after the shutdown.
If you cannot distinguish a 2nd-generation model from a 3rd-generation model, do not buy a replacement based only on appearance. Confirm the model through Google’s documentation or contact Google Support.
What stopped working?
Google says affected thermostats were unpaired and removed from the Nest or Google Home app. The following connected functions are no longer available or should not be relied upon:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Control through the Nest app or Google Home app
- Remote temperature and mode changes
- Cloud-based schedule editing
- Google Assistant and other connected voice controls
- Home/Away Assist
- Multi-device Eco-mode control
- Third-party integrations
- Cloud notifications and remote status checks
- The thermostat connection to Nest Protect
This is the important distinction: Google removed the thermostat’s cloud services, not necessarily every function available from the wall.
Will the thermostat still heat or cool the home?
An affected thermostat may still be adjustable locally and may continue communicating with the HVAC equipment. However, Google’s announcement confirms the loss of cloud-connected services; it should not be treated as a guarantee that every thermostat, firmware version, schedule, or HVAC configuration will behave identically.

- Nest’s smartest, most advanced thermostat yet, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a beautiful, brilliant way to save energy, keep your home comfortable, and help make sure your heating and cooling systems are running smoothly[4]
- Savings you can count on: The Nest Learning Thermostat can help save up to 31% on heating and cooling bills[2]
- Improved compatibility: It works with most 24V systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump, and radiant, and no C wire is required for installation in most homes; visit the Nest Compatibility Checker for more info[5]
- Easy control in the Google Home app: Adjust on your phone from anywhere[1] or by using your voice with Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant smart speaker[3], it’s easy to install yourself and it’s Matter compatible for simple integration into your smart home[5]
- Beautiful design: With a 60% larger display[11] and Dynamic Farsight, you can see info from across the room[1]; choose the design, like a clock or the weather; it automatically adjusts brightness for the best readability or you can adjust manually
Before relying on the thermostat, test it directly at the wall:
- Set the system to heating and confirm that the heating equipment starts.
- Set it to cooling, when outdoor conditions and your equipment make that safe, and confirm that cooling starts.
- Test the fan setting.
- Check whether the displayed temperature changes as expected.
- Test any existing schedule at more than one time of day.
- Confirm that the home reaches and maintains the expected temperature.
If the thermostat is blank, unresponsive, unable to maintain temperature, or fails to start the HVAC system, do not automatically assume the support shutdown is the cause. Wiring, batteries, power supply, the HVAC equipment, or another fault may be involved.

What happens to schedules?
Schedule behavior needs to be tested rather than assumed. A schedule managed through Google’s cloud services may no longer be editable, while some schedule information may continue to run locally. Google’s shutdown does not justify promising that a schedule will continue indefinitely.
Write down the temperatures and times you need, then check the thermostat manually. If the schedule is unreliable, use manual adjustments or replace the thermostat before extreme winter or summer conditions arrive.
Nest Protect warning
Google says the shutdown removes the thermostat connection to Nest Protect and that the thermostat-linked emergency shutoff function will no longer run.

That does not mean Nest Protect’s basic smoke and carbon-monoxide alarm functions are automatically disabled. It does mean you should not assume the alarms still provide the same thermostat-related HVAC shutoff behavior. Check the Protect devices independently and consider whether your HVAC system needs another safety strategy.
Did Google offer a replacement?
Google said eligible owners would receive a personalized offer for the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen. A special US price of $149.99 was reported for some affected owners, but that should not be treated as a universal or current price in 2026. Eligibility, location, timing, inventory, and offer expiry can vary.
Check the Google email address associated with your account and look for an offer in your Google Home account. If you believe you qualify but received nothing, Google’s support information says to contact Google Support.
Is the 4th-generation Nest a drop-in replacement?
No—not automatically. The Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen works with many 24-volt HVAC systems, but compatibility depends on the equipment and wiring in your home.
Before buying, use Google’s compatibility checker, particularly if your home has:

The 4th-generation thermostat has a new backplate. The old wall plate and wiring should not be assumed to transfer directly. Installation may require relabeling wires, changing terminal connections, adding a Power Connector, fitting a trim plate, or hiring a professional.
Before disconnecting anything, turn off HVAC power, photograph the wiring, label every wire, and confirm compatibility. If you are unsure about the control board or auxiliary equipment, use a qualified HVAC technician.

Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen
The 4th-generation model is the strongest choice for owners who want to remain in Google’s ecosystem. It uses the Google Home app, supports Matter-compatible smart-home apps and voice assistants, includes one 2nd-generation Nest Temperature Sensor, and supports up to six Nest Temperature Sensors per thermostat.
The US Google Store price observed in the supplied product information was $279.99. Prices and promotions vary by date and location. The official product page is Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen page.
Choose it when you want room sensing, learning features, Matter support, and the most capable current Nest. Avoid treating it as an automatic choice if you want to reduce cloud dependence or your HVAC system has complex controls.

Standard Nest Thermostat
The current standard Nest Thermostat is a lower-cost Google Home option. Its US list price was observed as $129.99, but prices can change.
It does not support the Nest Temperature Sensor and uses guided scheduling rather than the 4th-generation Learning Thermostat’s automatic learning schedule. It may suit a compatible, simpler HVAC system where price matters more than advanced sensing and control. Google says some systems may require a C wire or Power Connector, so compatibility still comes first. See the official Nest Thermostat page.
Another brand or a conventional thermostat
A non-Google thermostat may make sense if you are concerned about vendor lock-in, prefer another smart-home ecosystem, or need HVAC features Nest does not support. A conventional programmable thermostat is the simplest option for reducing dependence on accounts, apps, and cloud services.
Compare the exact model’s current compatibility, installation requirements, support policy, and ongoing costs before buying. Do not assume another brand is automatically cheaper, more reliable, or cloud-free.
Should you keep the affected thermostat temporarily?
Keeping it for a short time can be reasonable if it still controls heating and cooling locally, the property is low-risk, no critical Nest Protect integration is involved, and you are comfortable checking the temperature manually.
Replacement is the safer decision when you need remote access, notifications, reliable scheduling, temperature monitoring for a vacant property, or the former Nest Protect thermostat integration. It is also sensible when the thermostat is already unreliable or your HVAC system needs functions that local-only operation cannot provide.
What to do now
- Identify the exact thermostat model.
- Confirm whether it is one of the three affected generations.
- Test heating, cooling, fan, and schedule behavior at the wall.
- Check whether Nest Protect or another automation depends on the thermostat.
- Look for Google’s personalized replacement offer.
- Run your HVAC system through Google’s compatibility checker before purchasing.
- Check local utility rebates using your ZIP or postal code.
- Choose between the 4th-generation Nest, standard Nest, another smart thermostat, or a conventional model.
- Photograph and label every wire before removing the old thermostat.
- Arrange a backup temperature-control plan for vulnerable occupants, pets, or unoccupied properties.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Google ended cloud support for the 1st-generation, 2nd-generation, and 2nd-generation Europe Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025. Your thermostat may still operate from the wall, but app control, remote access, integrations, and Nest Protect thermostat-linked shutoff are gone. Keep it only if local operation is adequate and low-risk; otherwise confirm HVAC compatibility and replace it with a suitable thermostat or arrange professional installation.
