The Handy Online Metric Screw, Nut, and Washer Generator is an OpenSCAD-based parametric tool reported to generate customizable metric screws, matching nuts, and washers from approximately M2 through M16. It can reportedly export STL and 3MF files, while advanced users can download the underlying ScrewGenerator.scad source for local editing.
For construction and workshop use, it is best treated as a rapid-prototyping aid—not a substitute for certified steel, stainless-steel, aluminum, brass, or manufactured nylon fasteners. A printed fastener may be useful for a light-duty fixture, temporary assembly, custom jig, or nonconductive enclosure, but nominally correct geometry does not guarantee structural strength or reliable clamping.

What the generator is
The tool is a web interface built around a parametric OpenSCAD model. Instead of drawing every thread and fastener feature manually, you choose dimensions and adjust the available parameters before generating a printable model.
The project was covered by Hackaday on January 31, 2025. That report identifies a MakerWorld project page as the host for the generator and files. Because the specific page could not be independently verified here, its current availability, interface, and download behavior should be treated as subject to change.

What it can generate
According to the Hackaday report, the generator covers metric sizes from M2 to M16 and can produce:
- Metric screws
- Matching nuts
- Washers
- Adjustable thread-related dimensions
- Other configurable fastener features exposed by the interface
The reported output formats are .stl and .3mf. The project also provides an option labelled “Download STL/CAD Files”, including the ScrewGenerator.scad script for local use. The source describes broad customization, but it does not establish a complete list of supported head styles, pitches, standards, or dimensions. Do not assume that every standard configuration is available merely because the tool supports the M2–M16 nominal range.
What M2 through M16 means
The M designation refers primarily to nominal thread diameter:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- M2: approximately 2 mm nominal diameter
- M16: approximately 16 mm nominal diameter
An M-size alone is not a complete fastener specification. A construction drawing or purchasing list may also need thread pitch, length, head style, head dimensions, nut type, washer dimensions, material, strength grade, finish, tolerance, and the applicable standard.
A generated M8 model, for example, should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a particular M8 property-class bolt. The printed model may have different dimensions, tolerances, thread form, strength, and behavior under load.

How to use the online generator
- Open the reported project page. Confirm that the project is available and that you are using the intended version.
- Select the metric size. Choose the required nominal size within the range offered by the interface.
- Adjust the available parameters. Set the thread, length, and other screw, nut, or washer dimensions exposed by the current version.
- Generate or preview the model. Check that the part is the type and approximate size required.
- Download the result. Use STL for broad mesh compatibility or 3MF where your slicer supports its richer project information.
- Import it into your slicer or CAD workflow. Check scale and units before preparing the print.
- Print a short test first. Test the screw and nut together before committing to a long print or using the part in an assembly.
- Measure and revise. Adjust clearance or dimensions for the actual printer, nozzle, material, and print orientation.
Exact button names, parameter locations, preview behavior, and whether generation is performed locally or remotely should be checked against the live project. They may change independently of the original article.
STL or 3MF?
| Format | Best understood as | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
STL |
A widely supported triangle mesh | Usually the safest choice when compatibility with an older slicer or CAD application matters. It carries limited metadata. |
3MF |
A newer 3D-printing container | Often preferable when supported because it can preserve richer project information. Compatibility still depends on the software receiving it. |
Neither format should be assumed to produce better geometry without inspecting the actual files. Confirm that the imported model has the expected units, scale, and orientation.

Why download the OpenSCAD source?
The downloadable ScrewGenerator.scad file is more useful than a finished mesh if you expect to iterate. With OpenSCAD, you can work offline, reproduce a model, inspect its construction, add custom features, automate variants, or combine the fastener with another parametric design.
Local use may require a compatible OpenSCAD installation and may depend on libraries, syntax, or version assumptions in the script. A script that opens successfully is not automatically a standards-compliant engineering model. Inspect the generated geometry and validate it against the real hardware or assembly.
Where printed fasteners make sense
Printed screws, nuts, and washers can be reasonable when the consequences of failure are low and customization is more important than certified performance. Examples include:

Use a manufactured fastener when strength, durability, dimensional consistency, or predictable preload matters. Do not rely on an ordinary FDM print for load-bearing structural connections, safety-critical machinery, pressure vessels, automotive or aircraft systems, medical applications, high-temperature locations, repeated cyclic loading, high-torque clamping, corrosive environments, or assemblies where failure could injure someone or cause significant property damage.
Commercial fasteners are available with known material grades, dimensions, finishes, and manufacturing controls. For many printed assemblies, the better design is to print the surrounding part and install a standard screw with one of these features:
- A clearance hole
- A threaded hole
- A captured nut or nut trap
- A counterbore or countersink
- A heat-set insert pocket
- A captive-screw feature
If a standard screw is inexpensive and readily available, printing the screw is often the least reliable part of the solution.
Why printed threads can fail
A CAD model can look correct while the physical thread performs poorly. Common failure modes include:

- Layer adhesion: Interlayer strength may be lower than in-plane strength, particularly when the print is oriented unfavorably.
- Thread-flank deformation: Plastic flanks can crush or deform under tightening load.
- Insufficient resolution: Small threads may be too fine for the nozzle, extrusion width, and layer height to reproduce cleanly.
- Dimensional error: Shrinkage, elephant’s foot, over-extrusion, and inaccurate holes can prevent proper fit.
- Creep: Thermoplastics can slowly deform under sustained clamping force, reducing preload.
- Heat: A part that works at room temperature may soften in a warm enclosure, roof space, vehicle, or machine.
- Wear: Repeated assembly can round or strip plastic threads.
- Stringing and supports: Residue or support removal can damage the thread profile.
- Orientation: Print direction changes both strength and surface quality.
- Slicer changes: Perimeters, extrusion width, cooling, seam placement, and speed can change the effective geometry.
The original coverage mentions approximately 0.08 mm layer height as an example of a setting that may help produce useful prints. That is not a universal recommendation. Nozzle diameter, material, printer calibration, thread size, orientation, and intended load matter at least as much.

Start with a fit test
Print a short section of the screw and nut rather than the full part. Check whether the threads engage smoothly, bind, wobble, or strip. Test the actual combination of material, nozzle, layer height, and slicer profile that you plan to use.
Calibrate before changing the model
Check extrusion, horizontal expansion, first-layer behavior, and dimensional accuracy. A nominally correct CAD dimension will not necessarily produce a nominal physical dimension. Measure the printed part with calipers and compare it with the mating hardware or hole.
Use the intended engagement length
Test the full depth over which the screw and nut will engage. A part that works for two turns may fail when loaded over a longer section if the thread is undersized, rough, or misaligned.

| Material | General consideration |
|---|---|
| PLA | Easy to print, but generally a poor choice for heat or long-term sustained load. |
| PETG | Typically tougher and more temperature-resistant than PLA, but it can string and deform. |
| ABS/ASA | Potentially more suitable for heat or outdoor exposure, but more demanding to print. |
| Nylon | Can offer useful toughness and wear resistance, but is moisture-sensitive and often harder to print accurately. |
| TPU | Flexible; usually unsuitable for rigid precision threads unless flexibility is intentional. |
These are general trade-offs, not material ratings. Consult the filament manufacturer’s data and validate the finished part for the actual use.

Small sizes are especially difficult
M2 and M3 parts can be challenging on ordinary FDM printers because thread detail, extrusion width, cooling, and dimensional error become large relative to the part itself. The Hackaday discussion includes user skepticism about reliably printing very small hardware, but it does not provide systematic test data.
For small sizes, consider a resin printer, a finer nozzle where practical, carefully controlled exposure or cooling, and a sacrificial test part. Even then, a purchased metal or nylon fastener may be cheaper and more dependable.
Thread-start geometry and the Higbee discussion
The Hackaday comments include a discussion about whether the thread start should taper into the screw body. One commenter objected to the apparent geometry; another described it as a Higbee-style thread start and argued that the shape was intentional rather than a defect.
The important lesson is that a non-tapered or relieved thread start is not automatically a modeling error. However, the comment discussion should not be treated as independent verification of the current model’s geometry or standards compliance. If the thread start matters to your application, inspect the generated model and test it against the mating part.
Print, buy, or download supplier CAD?
| Option | Choose it when | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Print a custom fastener | You need unusual dimensions, rapid iteration, low loads, or nonconductive/custom hardware. | Strength, heat resistance, wear, and dimensional consistency are limited. |
| Buy a manufactured fastener | You need known performance, durability, preload, or a standard inexpensive part. | Less flexible for unusual dimensions or one-off geometry. |
| Download supplier CAD | You need an accurate representation of a real commercial screw, nut, or washer in an assembly. | The model represents a purchasable part rather than a custom printable design. |
| Print a mounting feature | You are building a 3D-printed assembly that can use a standard screw, nut, or insert. | Requires planning for access, tolerances, and installation. |
For commercial fastener geometry, McMaster-Carr is one possible source of downloadable CAD models. Use the model to represent the real part, and buy the actual hardware when the assembly depends on its mechanical properties.
Alternatives to the web generator
- Edit the OpenSCAD source: Best for parametric, repeatable customisation and offline work.
- Use a conventional CAD package: Better when the fastener must be integrated into a larger engineered assembly or constrained against other components.
- Use a hardware CAD library: Useful when the goal is an accurate representation of a standard purchased component.
- Use physical standard hardware: Usually the right answer for structural, safety-critical, high-temperature, or vibration-heavy work.
Bottom line
This generator is a useful shortcut for creating customizable metric screw, nut, and washer models, especially for prototypes, jigs, low-load fixtures, educational projects, and unusual printed assemblies. Its reported M2–M16 range, STL/3MF exports, and downloadable OpenSCAD source make it more flexible than manually modeling a thread from scratch.
Use the result as a printed plastic part only after testing its fit and considering the load and environment. For reliable construction hardware, known preload, high heat, vibration, structural duty, or any application where failure matters, buy a properly specified manufactured fastener instead.
