Yes—you can reuse an old phone as a basic home-monitoring camera. The fastest setup uses AlfredCamera: install it on the retired phone and your current phone, set one to Camera and the other to Viewer, pair them, then test the live feed and alerts.
This is a low-cost DIY camera—not a professionally monitored security system. It may not provide dependable 24/7 recording, battery backup, tamper protection, weatherproofing, sirens, or emergency dispatch. Basic features may be free, while continuous recording, higher resolution, and cloud history can require a subscription.

What you need
- One retired phone to leave at the monitored location.
- One current phone, tablet, or computer to view the camera.
- Reliable Wi-Fi or another usable internet connection at the camera location.
- A charger, cable, and ventilated place to keep the old phone powered.
- A stable stand, shelf, tripod, or phone mount.
- Enough storage for the app and selected recording features. Alfred recommends at least 400 MB of available internal storage for features such as Activity Detection and Continuous Recording.
Alfred’s current setup documentation lists Android 5.0 or newer and iOS 12 or newer for camera devices. Viewer devices require Android 7.0 or newer or iOS 15 or newer. Check the app store on your specific phone because app compatibility can change.

Set it up in about five minutes
1. Prepare both phones
Charge both devices and connect them to a reliable network. Remove unnecessary files from the old phone, install available operating-system updates, and make sure the camera has adequate storage.
Keep the camera phone connected to power, but do not cover it or place it on bedding, inside a box, or against an insulating surface. A phone running a camera continuously can become hot.
2. Install AlfredCamera
Install AlfredCamera on both devices. The old phone will be the Camera; the current phone will be the Viewer.
3. Sign in
Create an account or sign in using Google, Apple, or email. The simplest route is normally to use the same account on both devices. Because this is an account- and cloud-connected service, review Alfred’s privacy policy and secure the account with a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication where available.
4. Assign the roles
On the old phone, choose Camera and grant the permissions required for video, audio, notifications, and any selected detection features. On the current phone, choose Viewer.
5. Pair the phones
You can usually pair them by signing in to the same account. Alfred also documents a QR-code method:

6. Test before mounting
Open the live feed and confirm that video and audio work. Walk through the monitored area to test motion alerts. If remote viewing matters, switch the viewer to cellular data or another outside network and confirm that the camera is still reachable.
Also test what happens after a brief Wi-Fi interruption or phone restart. On some camera devices, pressing the power or Home button can take the camera offline.
Configure the camera for useful alerts
Depending on the phone, app version, region, and plan, review these settings:
- Motion detection: Enable alerts and test them from several distances.
- Sound detection: Useful for a nursery, pet area, or equipment room where available.
- Push notifications: Check that notifications are allowed on the viewer phone.
- Low-light or night mode: Helpful in dim areas, but it is not necessarily equivalent to infrared night vision on a dedicated camera.
- Camera orientation: Rotate the image and choose the correct front or rear lens.
- Video and audio: Adjust quality, microphone, and speaker settings as needed.
- Privacy controls: Use camera-off schedules or masking options if the app provides them.
- Camera name: Use a clear label such as “Front Door” or “Garage.”
Do not assume that continuous recording, high-resolution video, or long cloud retention is included for free. Alfred’s support documentation associates features such as Full HD, continuous recording, and 30-day cloud storage with paid plans. Its U.S. pricing page lists plans starting at $5.99 per month or $35.99 per year, but prices and features vary by region and can change.

Where to place the old phone
Good locations include an entryway facing the front door, a small room, a garage viewed from inside, a pet area, or a nursery. Position the phone high enough to avoid accidental knocks, while leaving enough of the room in view to detect movement.

Avoid direct sunlight and bright windows behind the subject. If filming through a window, control reflections and glare, and remember that night visibility may be poor because of reflections from the glass.
Keep the phone away from rain, condensation, cooking grease, extreme temperatures, and places where a cable can be pulled. Choose a mount with adjustable angle and cable clearance, but avoid enclosed mounts that trap heat.
What “free” really means
| Feature | What to expect |
|---|---|
| App download | Generally free to install. |
| Live viewing | Basic viewing may be available on the free tier; confirm current limits. |
| Motion or sound alerts | Availability and limits can vary by app version, region, and plan. |
| Continuous recording | Do not assume it is free or unlimited. |
| Cloud history | Often limited or reserved for a paid plan. |
| Remote viewing | Requires the camera to have internet access and should be tested away from home Wi-Fi. |
| Hardware | Only free if you already own a suitable phone, charger, mount, and internet connection. |
There may also be electricity costs, replacement-cable costs, mobile-data charges, subscription fees, and the opportunity cost of selling or recycling the old phone.
Battery and charging safety
Do not use the phone if its battery is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, or lifting the screen or back. Stop using it and follow the phone maker’s safety guidance.
Use a reputable charger and cable. Keep the phone uncovered and ventilated, inspect it periodically, and do not treat a permanently plugged-in aging phone as a set-and-forget device.
Privacy and legal considerations
Tell household members, guests, caregivers, and contractors when audio or video monitoring is active. Do not secretly monitor another adult or record private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms without informed consent.

The camera is offline
- Check that the old phone is powered and, if required, unlocked.
- Confirm that it is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Open AlfredCamera and verify that it is still assigned the Camera role.
- Reopen the viewer app.
- Check whether battery-saver settings have restricted the app.
- Restart the camera phone only if necessary.
- Re-pair the devices if the account or QR link was lost.
No alerts arrive
Confirm that motion or sound detection is enabled, notifications are allowed on the viewer, and the camera has a clear view. Test again while standing in the intended detection area. Some alert features may be limited by the current plan.
The QR code will not pair
Confirm that both devices have internet access, update the app if possible, sign out and back in, then generate a new QR code. If pairing still fails, use the same account on both devices or check Alfred’s current support instructions.
The phone is hot or storage is low
Improve ventilation, lower video quality if available, remove unnecessary files, and stop using the phone if the battery shows damage or abnormal heat. Do not continue operating a suspect battery merely to preserve the camera feed.

It is also not a replacement for smoke, carbon-monoxide, water-leak, door, or window sensors. It generally cannot determine reliably whether motion comes from an intruder, family member, pet, or delivery worker.
Other app options
AlfredCamera is the most straightforward general-purpose choice when you want a fast Android-and-iPhone setup with account-based pairing.
Pylo is an iPhone/iPad option listed in the U.S. App Store at $4.99 at the time of research. Its listing describes local operation, no account, no cloud, Apple Home integration, motion detection, and HomeKit Secure Video support. It is not a free-first, cross-platform recommendation.
Farscope is Android-first and positions itself around local viewing and storage on the camera phone. Its official site lists a free local-Wi-Fi tier and a one-time Owner Pass, but the iPhone version was described as planned rather than currently available.
RECAM advertises support for iPhone 8+, iPad, and Android, along with on-device detection, encrypted streaming, and a free core without mandatory cloud. These are vendor claims, so check current app availability and terms before choosing it.
