Washing Machine Dilemmas: Expert Advice on Repair vs. Replace

Repair a washer when a diagnosed fault costs a modest share of a comparable replacement and the machine has no repeat-failure pattern. Here is how to read quotes, check warranties, and weigh age.

Repair a washer when a diagnosed fault can be fixed for a modest share of what a comparable replacement would cost, the machine is otherwise sound, and it has no pattern of repeat failures. Replace it when the quote is large, the machine is near the end of its typical life, or it has already needed expensive work. No reliable universal age or percentage cutoff settles this for every washer, so the decision rests on a diagnosis, a complete quote, and a realistic price for a replacement.

Start with a diagnosis, not a symptom

Consumer Reports lists control-panel malfunctions, failure to drain, excessive vibration, leaks, improper drum spinning, a clogged drain pump, and odor, mold, or mildew as common washer problems. None of these names the failed part on its own. A leak can come from a hose, a door seal, a drain pump, or a fill valve, and each has a very different repair cost. Before you approve any work, ask the technician to name the cause, not just the symptom.

Check the warranty, recalls, and manual first

A warranty or recall can change who pays for a repair, and sometimes whether a repair is needed at all. Work through these checks before you call anyone:

  1. Find the model and serial numbers on the rating label. On most machines this is inside the door opening or on the back panel.
  2. Check the warranty in the owner’s manual or on the manufacturer’s site. Note whether it covers parts, labor, or both, and when it expires.
  3. Search the model number for recalls or manufacturer service notices.
  4. Try the simple fixes the manual describes, such as rebalancing a load that is thumping, or cleaning the drain filter if the machine has one. Follow the manual’s steps exactly.

If a recall or warranty covers the fault, the comparison with a replacement changes completely.

Read the quote line by line

A repair quote should separate the diagnostic or service charge, the parts, the labor, and the cost of any repeat visit. Those separate lines matter because the service charge is often the part people overlook. Dean Landers, president of Landers Appliance, told Consumer Reports in its August 16, 2026 washer repair-or-replace guide: “The service charge is going to be at least $100 to $150.” That figure is one provider’s statement, not a fee schedule, and some providers fold the charge into labor instead of listing it separately. Compare total quotes rather than individual line items.

Before you accept a quote, ask three questions:

  • Does the repair address the root cause that the diagnosis identified?
  • What warranty covers the replacement part and the labor, and for how long?
  • Is the quote a firm price, or an estimate that can change once the machine is opened up?

Warranty terms on repair work vary by provider, so get them in writing.

What typical repairs cost

Consumer Reports publishes median repair ranges from its 2024 member survey. These ranges exclude the service quote fee, so a real invoice will often be higher.

Washer type Median repair cost (Consumer Reports, 2024 survey) Notes
Front-load $158–$214 Excludes the service quote fee
Top-load agitator $123–$175 Excludes the service quote fee
Top-load HE $142–$213 Excludes the service quote fee
Compact About $186 Single median figure, not a range; excludes the service quote fee

The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 clothes-washer standards analysis puts the average repair cost at about $241, with a modeled lifetime range of $123–$294. That is a regulatory modeling estimate built from repair-cost inputs, not a price you can expect to be quoted today. Local prices depend on your region and the technician you hire, and the sources here do not establish a current local figure.

How long washers last, and why sources disagree

Lifespan figures differ because each source measures something different. The table below shows what each one covers.

Source Figure What it measures
Consumer Reports, August 16, 2026 guide Close to 10 years on average Consumer Reports’ own estimate of average washer life
U.S. Department of Energy, 2024 clothes-washer standards analysis Average residential lifetime of 13.4 years Estimate derived from field data using a survival-function method
AEG UK support guidance (undated) 7–12 years UK manufacturer guidance, not a U.S. or cross-brand estimate

Two Consumer Reports survey results are often confused. Its 2025 member survey found that only 13 percent of washers broke down during the second through fifth years of ownership. That is a share of machines over a four-year window, not an annual failure rate. Its older longevity survey, published in 2019, found that about 20 percent of washing machines bought between 2011 and 2021 broke or stopped working as intended. Those are different populations and periods, so the two figures should not be compared directly.

Age alone is therefore a weak signal. A ten-year-old machine that has needed one inexpensive repair in its life is in a very different position from one that has needed three major repairs in the last two years.

Why replacement is common, and what that does not prove

In a 2024 nationally representative Consumer Reports survey of 2,154 U.S. adults conducted in summer 2024, 60 percent of respondents said a large appliance had stopped working in the previous five years. Of those households, 58 percent replaced the broken product. The figure covers large appliances as a group, not washers alone, and it does not show whether repair would have been the better financial choice in those cases.

Compare the options using the same inputs

Consumer Reports’ interactive repair-or-replace tool uses appliance age, original price, repair cost, new-product cost, survey data, and depreciation rates. It is useful for framing the decision, but it cannot replace a diagnosis of your specific machine. Work through the following steps with your own numbers:

  1. Confirm the diagnosis and total quote. Use the all-in figure that includes the service fee.
  2. Price a comparable replacement. Match capacity, loading style, and key features. Do not compare a repair quote with a premium model that has features you would not otherwise buy. Include delivery, installation, removal of the old unit, and any hookups, which are local costs you will need to quote separately.
  3. Weigh condition and history. Count previous repairs, how often the machine has been out of service, and whether it still performs its wash cycles properly.
  4. Check parts availability. Specialized parts and tools may be restricted to authorized distributors, which can lengthen the repair or raise its cost.
  5. Compare running costs for any replacement. Look at water and energy use, capacity, dimensions, and your local utility rates. The sources here do not establish a savings figure for any particular household.

A worked example with illustrative numbers

Suppose a six-year-old front-load washer needs a drain pump replaced, and the all-in quote is $260 including the service fee. A comparable replacement, installed and with the old unit removed, comes to $800. The repair is roughly a third of the replacement cost, the machine has no repair history, and the warranty on the new pump covers parts and labor. In that scenario, repair is the stronger choice. If the same machine had needed a control board last year and the new quote was $550, the balance would shift toward replacement. These figures are illustrative, not prices.

When a DIY repair makes sense

Do-it-yourself work is most defensible for a simple, manual-supported task performed by someone with the skills to do it. Examples include rebalancing a load, cleaning a filter, or replacing a control knob, after confirming the exact part for your model. Consumer Reports cautions that modern washers are complex, and unless you have experience in appliance repair, it advises a professional. It states: “Unless you have some experience in appliance repair, you’re probably better off with an expert fix from a more reliable professional.”

  • Unplug the machine and shut off its water supply before any inspection.
  • Do not open electrical enclosures, work on motors, or test live components.
  • Do not guess at a replacement component. Match the part number to your model.
  • Stop and call a professional if a repair requires disassembly you have not done before.

What this guidance does not cover

This is general, U.S.-oriented guidance, not a diagnosis of your machine. It does not establish a current local repair quote, a recommended washer model, installation costs in your area, or the energy savings a new machine would deliver in your home. Those depend on a qualified technician’s diagnosis, your own replacement quotes, and your utility rates.

The clearest test is simple: once you have a full, itemized quote and a price for a comparable replacement, ask whether the machine is worth keeping at that price, given its condition and history.
