It is a viscoelastic polyurethane base with gel materials added to the foam matrix, and the exact gel chemistry and amount vary by product and manufacturer. There is no single universal recipe, so the label alone rarely tells you what is inside.
How the polyurethane base is made
Every gel memory foam starts from the same chemical family as other flexible polyurethane foam. The Technical Specialist Group PUR Flexible Foam of the German trade association Fachverband Schaumkunststoffe und Polyurethane e.V. (FSK) describes the process in its product description for PUR gel foam, dated 2017-02-08:
- Diisocyanate and polyalcohols react. The two main raw materials undergo an exothermic polyaddition reaction, which releases heat as the foam forms.
- Catalysts and stabilizers control the reaction. Catalysts speed the reaction, stabilizers hold the foam structure together, and other auxiliaries adjust processing.
- The formulation sets the final properties. According to the FSK, the components and their proportions determine the finished foam, and each quality grade has its own composition.
Memory foam is a specific kind of this polyurethane: a viscoelastic foam whose behaviour depends on how its additives and formulation affect viscosity and elasticity. The Sleep Foundation notes that most memory foam mattresses contain some polyether polyol, which contributes to that elasticity and viscosity. Common flexible polyurethane ingredients listed by the Sleep Foundation include polyols, diisocyanates and blowing agents. The exact blends and processes differ between manufacturers and are often proprietary.
Where the gel comes in
The gel is an addition to the polyurethane, not a replacement for it. The FSK says the term “gel foam” comes from raw materials used in production that are described as gels, partly because of their physicochemical structure, and that these materials are incorporated into the polyurethane matrix. Two construction patterns follow from that wording.

Gel materials built into the foam
In a true gel foam, the gel material sits inside the foam structure itself. The FSK classifies PUR gel foam as a subgroup of PUR flexible foams, so the finished product is still one foam rather than a foam with a separate gel layer.
Gel components used separately
Gel components can also appear in mattresses without the foam being called gel foam. The FSK notes this distinction explicitly, so a product marketed as having a “gel layer” may not have the same construction as one described as “gel foam.” Check which one you are looking at before comparing products.

What the gel may change
According to the FSK document, different gel variants can influence mechanical and physical properties, including gel touch, pressure relief and thermal conductivity. That supports the general point that gel additives alter how a foam feels and behaves.
It does not establish that every gel memory foam sleeps cooler. The sources reviewed contain no standardized comparative results and no universal cooling effect for gel foam. Treat “gel” as a description of construction, not a guarantee of temperature performance.

Ingredient disclosure and certification
What CertiPUR-US covers
CertiPUR-US tests flexible polyurethane foam used in home furnishings for content and emissions, using independent accredited laboratories. Its website says the participating-company directory is updated weekly and recommends that consumers check the directory to confirm a company is participating. A certification tells you that the foam met defined testing criteria. It does not list every ingredient in a proprietary formula.
What manufacturers disclose
Manufacturers do not always publish their formulas. Tempur-Pedic describes its own proprietary foam formula as a trade secret, and its public statements about formaldehyde, latex and PBDEs apply to that company’s products. They should not be generalized to every memory foam or gel foam on the market.

Reading a gel foam label
A retail listing can use the word gel without explaining it. Costco describes its Novaform SoFresh Plus as a gel-infused memory foam topper and lists its fill as 100% polyurethane foam. The listing does not disclose the gel chemistry or the gel percentage. The table below shows what common label claims do and do not tell you.

Questions to ask before buying
- Is the gel mixed into the foam, or is it a separate gel layer?
- What is the foam fill, and is it described as polyurethane foam?
- Which gel material is used, and what share of the product does it make up?
- Is the foam certified, and does the company appear in the CertiPUR-US directory?
- If the company has a proprietary formula, what public test or certification information does it provide?
If a manufacturer cannot answer the first three questions, you cannot compare its gel foam with another product on composition. Compare on the disclosed construction, the layer position and the scope of any certification instead.
