That result is promising, but it does not mean raw coffee grounds can be mixed into concrete or that every coffee-biochar mix will perform the same way.
What did the coffee-concrete study actually test?
The 2023 paper, Transforming spent coffee grounds into a valuable resource for the enhancement of concrete strength, investigated spent coffee grounds as a partial replacement for fine aggregate (sand). It compared untreated grounds with coffee biochar, which is produced by heating biomass through pyrolysis, and tested different replacement rates and production temperatures. The reported peak was a 29.3% increase in compressive strength for the mix using biochar produced at 350 °C; the highlighted mix replaced 15% of the sand by volume. The study record and Monash University’s publication record describe the work.
“30% stronger” is a rounded headline for that reported 29.3% compressive-strength result. It is not a general rating for concrete containing coffee waste. The result applies to the tested formulation and processing conditions, not automatically to other mixes, production methods, or construction applications.
Why can’t you just add used coffee grounds?
The study found that raw spent coffee grounds leached organic compounds that interfered with cement hydration, the chemical reactions by which cement hardens. That interference reduced strength. The promising result involved coffee grounds first converted to biochar, not untreated grounds added directly to a concrete batch.
#1 Best Overall
- FOR EASY REPAIRS — It's the ideal concrete patch repair mix, neatly fixing cracks and spalls so your property looks like new. It's even textured for a more seamless blend with the existing structure
- TOUGH AND DURABLE — Formulated to avoid shrinking or cracking, the ready-to-use premixed cement patch offers good adhesion and high strength so your slabs, walls & walkways/sidewalks perform as good as ever
- EASY CLEANUP — Sika concrete patch is acrylic-based, so once application is done, it cleans up using only water. No need for special cleaners and chemicals
- GREEN — It follows regulations concerning the use of volatile organic compounds (VOC), helping to keep the air we breathe cleaner and fresher
- A BREEZE TO USE — Minimal prep is required, since it comes premixed. Just use a putty or trowel to spread where repairs are needed. It takes only a few hours to set and about a day for a full cure
For construction use, that distinction matters: the feedstock preparation is part of the material specification. Changing the treatment temperature or the proportion of sand replaced may change the outcome, so the laboratory result is not a DIY recipe.
What does the 2025 field evaluation tell us?
A 2025 paper, Translating lab success to the field: Evaluating coffee biochar-enhanced concrete in real-world construction, describes a field evaluation undertaken with a local council and independent performance testing. It considered measures including slump, compressive strength, cored slab performance, flexural strength, and shrinkage. The available publication summary does not give the numerical results needed to establish that the field mix matched the laboratory’s 29.3% increase.

- QUICK SETTING: Sets in 20 minutes
- VERSATILE: Indoor, and outdoor use
- EASY TO USE: Ready to use! Just add water, mix, and use!
- MULTIPLE SURFACES: Handrails, bolts, poles, fixtures, and more
- PRACTICAL SIZE: 10 pound bag saves your back while providing plenty of cover
The field work also exposed a production challenge: the commercial-scale biochar producer’s equipment could not operate at the laboratory study’s optimal 350 °C because of operational constraints. The authors identify supply-chain limitations as an issue to address before coffee biochar could become a mainstream construction material. The 2025 field-study record describes this evaluation.
What the strength result does—and does not—establish
Compressive strength is one important property, but it cannot by itself establish whether a concrete mix is suitable for a particular project. A construction decision also depends on relevant performance measures, consistent production, and whether the material meets applicable project specifications and regulatory requirements.

- QUIKRETE COMPANIES
- Established by the highlighted study: a specific coffee-biochar mix achieved a reported 29.3% increase in compressive strength under the stated laboratory conditions.
- Not established by that number alone: tensile or flexural performance, long-term durability, code compliance, safety for a particular use, cost-effectiveness, or a quantified life-cycle emissions benefit.
- For evaluating other mixes: compare feedstock and pyrolysis temperature, replacement material and proportion, curing age and test method, workability, strength and shrinkage results, supply consistency, and any full life-cycle assessment.
The cited study summaries do not establish widespread commercial availability, code approval, long-term durability, or a quantified environmental benefit for this particular mix. Those questions require evidence beyond a single compressive-strength finding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could coffee-biochar concrete be used on a real project?
It has moved beyond a laboratory-only question: the 2025 paper reports a field evaluation. But that is not the same as evidence that the laboratory strength gain has been reproduced at construction scale or that a standardized, widely available product is ready for routine specification. The temperature constraint and supply limitations reported in the field evaluation show why scale-up depends on reliable biochar production as well as concrete performance.

- This product adds a great value
For now, the defensible takeaway is that biochar made from spent coffee grounds is a promising material under investigation—not a proven drop-in replacement for sand or a ready-made mix for site use.
