Why the 1919 Bolens/Gilson machine was not a riding tractor
The key distinction is how the operator used the machine. A powered walk-behind implement may be called a garden tractor, but it is not a riding garden tractor: the operator walks behind it rather than sitting or riding on it.
The Wisconsin Historical Society dates Gilson’s attachment of a gasoline engine to a multipurpose gardening implement to 1919. It describes the resulting machine as a “multi-purpose, walk-behind garden tractor” equipped with cultivator parts. What the John Deere 110 “first” claim means
The Smithsonian describes the 1963 John Deere 110 as “the first garden tractor-riding lawn mower made by John Deere Company.” Its catalog record characterizes it as a suburban tractor with a 7-horsepower engine and forward and reverse gears. The claim is explicitly about the first of this kind made by John Deere; it does not establish that the 110 was the first ride-on garden tractor from any manufacturer. The sources cited here do not identify a definitive first riding garden tractor across the industry. How to read competing “first” claims
- Configuration: Check whether the machine is walk-behind or designed for an operator to ride.
- Scope: A maker’s first is not automatically the industry’s first.
- Purpose: A powered implement carrier with gardening attachments and a riding lawn mower may both be described as garden tractors, but they are different machine types.
