A #6-32 screw has a nominal major diameter of 0.138 inch (3.505 mm) and 32 threads per inch. The “6” identifies the screw size; “32” is the thread count per inch. In the UNC designation, UNC means the Unified coarse thread series. Those details identify the thread—not the screw’s length, head, drive, material, or suitability for a particular assembly.

What does 6-32 mean on a screw?

In “#6-32 UNC,” “#6” is the screw size number, “32” means 32 threads per inch (TPI), and “UNC” identifies the Unified coarse thread series. The thread profile is 60 degrees. [LCA Microwave, September 4, 2026]

The size number is not a diameter in inches. For the #6-32 thread, the nominal major diameter—the largest diameter across the external threads—is 0.138 inch (3.505 mm). Its pitch, the distance from one thread to the next, is approximately 0.0313 inch (0.795 mm). [LCA Microwave, September 4, 2026]

What are the dimensions of a 6-32 screw?

Specification #6-32 UNC value What it describes
Thread series UNC Unified coarse thread series
Threads per inch 32 Number of thread peaks per inch
Nominal major diameter 0.138 inch (3.505 mm) Largest nominal diameter across the external threads
Pitch Approximately 0.0313 inch (0.795 mm) Spacing from one thread to the next
Thread profile angle 60 degrees Angle of the thread form

These are basic thread-identification dimensions, not a complete manufacturing specification. NBK America also lists No. 6-32 UNC in its coarse-thread reference; its dimensional tables distinguish major, pitch, and minor diameters, which are separate measurements. Do not substitute one diameter for another.

Mr. Pen- Machine Screw Assortment Kit, 370 Pcs
  • Mr. Pen machine screw set contains 370 pieces of the most commonly used size #6-32 for home or workplace use, perfect for fastening metal parts together. The 370 screws have a zinc-plated finish, ensuring durability and longevity.
  • The 6 most commonly used sizes are #6*3/4, #6*1, #6*1-1/4, #6*1-1/2, #6*2, #6*3, giving you the variety needed to complete any project. They can be used with nuts or directly into a female threaded receptacle, making them quite versatile.
  • The Phillips flat head design helps to provide extra stability when involved in projects that require multiple screws - such as terminal strips and electrical connections. It also allows the screw to be driven in flush with the surface it is being attached to, avoiding any protrusions that could cause potential safety hazards.
  • Mr. Pen electrician's machine screw kit is quick and easy to install; simply place it into an existing or pre-tapped hole and watch as it fully threads itself in for a secure fit. To ensure proper fitting, pair it with nuts of the same material, finish, and threading.
  • The corrosion-resistant construction ensures that these machine screws will withstand extreme weather conditions, such as high humidity, without rusting or corroding over time. Moreover, the zinc plating adds an extra layer of protection against potential damage caused by wear & tear.

Where are 6-32 screws used?

Hexagon’s machine-screw chart gives standard US computer cases and outlet faceplates as examples of applications for #6-32 UNC screws. [Hexagon machine-screw chart]

These are examples, not a guarantee that every computer case or faceplate has a #6-32 threaded hole. Designs vary. Check the equipment documentation or verify the particular receiving thread before choosing a replacement.

How to choose a complete 6-32 screw

The thread callout tells you what thread to look for; it does not establish whether a screw is the right complete fastener for the job. Before buying or replacing one, check the assembly requirements for:

  • Length: Determine the required under-head length and thread engagement from the mating parts and equipment specification.
  • Head and drive: Match the head shape and drive type to available clearance, access, and the assembly specification.
  • Material and finish: Select for the environment, corrosion resistance, and any electrical-contact requirements.
  • Standard and tolerances: Use supplier drawing and tolerance information where a critical fit is required.
  • Mating thread: Confirm the receiving thread in the documentation or by an appropriate fit check; do not force a screw that does not fit.

The cited references establish thread identification and dimensional values, but they do not establish application-specific strength, torque, or safety limits. Those must come from the assembly design or applicable manufacturer documentation. [LCA Microwave][NBK America]

Does a 6-32 screw tell you what drill or tap to use?

No. The thread designation identifies the external thread, but it is not by itself a complete tapping instruction. A tap-drill recommendation depends on the intended thread and job conditions. Consult current guidance from the tap or tooling manufacturer for the specific tap and application rather than relying on an isolated chart. The references cited here do not establish one universally appropriate drill size.
