Some tropical flowers can grow indoors and move outside for summer, but there is no single care recipe for all of them. Choose by the light, temperature, humidity and space you can provide—and treat frost risk as a hard limit. The available plant-specific guidance supports five useful examples, not a verified list of 33, so this guide focuses on those rather than padding the count.
How to choose tropical flowers for your space
Start with the conditions at the plant’s destination, not the word “tropical” on a label. Check whether the spot gets direct sun, filtered light or moderate indirect light; whether winter temperatures approach freezing; and how much room the mature plant will need. Indoors, also consider humidity and whether the plant is likely to flower in the light you have.
- Light: A warm, sunny room suits bird of paradise, while many gesneriads prefer moderate indirect light. Bromeliad preferences vary by type.
- Cold: Frost tolerance differs sharply. Some plants need frost-free conditions outdoors or must come inside before cold weather.
- Space: Check mature dimensions before choosing a plant for a room or conservatory.
- Water and nutrients: Container plants have limited root space, so moisture and nutrient availability can shift quickly and affect growth or flowering.
- Humidity: Dry indoor air can damage foliage or flower buds in some tropical plants.
For general seasonal planning, see University of Illinois Extension’s guide to tropical plants. For container variability, see the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s tropical container garden guidance.
Five tropical flowering plants with documented indoor or outdoor uses
Begonias
Fibrous-rooted and rhizomatous begonias can perform well indoors and in Florida landscapes, according to UF/IFAS. Depending on variety, flowers include red, pink and white. UF/IFAS gives outdoor zones 8b–11 and advises frost protection in cooler parts of Florida; that guidance should not be assumed to apply identically to every cultivar or region. Begonias can be propagated by seed or cuttings, with seed suitability depending on the type and its care needs.

Bromeliads
Bromeliads can grow indoors in bright, diffused light and outdoors in suitable frost-free Florida locations, but light preferences differ among varieties. Check the requirements for the specific bromeliad rather than assuming all tolerate the same sun. UF/IFAS bromeliad guidance covers those placement differences.
Bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae)
The Royal Horticultural Society describes this tender South African plant as suitable for a warm, sunny indoor room or conservatory, or for outdoor growth during summer in the UK. It can reach at least 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide, so allow for its eventual size. See the RHS growing guide for its care requirements.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Gesneriads
Gesneriads are a family that includes many showy-flowered tropical houseplants. Most grow and bloom well in moderate indirect light, and some can grow under fluorescent lights, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. This indoor guidance is family-level; it does not mean every gesneriad is suited to outdoor planting.
Desert rose (Adenium obesum)
UF/IFAS recommends high light for flowering and describes a hot temperature preference of 75–95°F. The plant is not freeze tolerant; UF/IFAS gives USDA zones 10B–12 for year-round outdoor planting. Treat these as the agency’s growing recommendations, not a guarantee of performance in every location. Details are in the UF/IFAS care guide for Adenium obesum.

Moving container plants between indoors and outdoors
A container can make seasonal moves practical, but the plant still needs suitable conditions in both locations. Illinois Extension recommends waiting to put tropicals outdoors until nights remain in the 50°F range and the soil has warmed. For winter, possible approaches include keeping a plant as a houseplant, storing dormant tubers or roots, collecting seed, taking cuttings, or using protected outdoor storage; which method works depends on the plant.
- Check the plant’s cold limits and your local forecast before planning an outdoor season.
- Wait for warm spring conditions: nights should remain in the 50°F range and soil should be warm before moving tropicals outside.
- Match the outdoor position to its light needs. A plant suited to filtered or indirect light may not tolerate a sudden move into strong direct sun.
- Plan the winter method in advance: keep it indoors if appropriate, or use a plant-suitable dormancy, propagation or protected-storage approach.
These seasonal options are described in Illinois Extension’s tropical plant guidance.

Set realistic indoor flowering expectations
A tropical plant may survive indoors without flowering reliably. Light, temperature, water and humidity all affect indoor growth; dry air can harm some tropical foliage and flower buds. Select a plant whose particular requirements match your home rather than assuming ordinary room conditions suit every species. The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension’s indoor plant guide discusses humidity effects, while the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension guide to growing indoor plants covers broader indoor growing factors.
Why a list of 33 needs plant-by-plant checking
A count alone cannot establish that 33 flowers are appropriate for both indoor and outdoor growing. For each candidate, verify its accepted name, flowering habit, light needs, mature size, frost tolerance, indoor feasibility and regional suitability using a reliable plant-specific source. The five examples above illustrate distinct possibilities; they are not a comparative ranking or a claim that all tropical flowers share the same care.
