TP-Link announced the Kasa KS200 smart on/off switch, KS220 dimmer switch and EP40A two-outlet outdoor smart plug on December 7, 2022. All three added Apple Home support to the Kasa range, alongside Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings compatibility. The practical choice is straightforward: KS200 for switching compatible loads, KS220 when the lighting circuit and bulbs support dimming, and EP40A for suitable outdoor equipment within its electrical and weather-protection limits.
What TP-Link announced in December 2022
TP-Link’s December 7, 2022 announcement introduced the KS200, KS220 and EP40A as HomeKit-compatible additions to its Kasa smart-home ecosystem. The release described the KS200 as a smart Wi-Fi light switch, the KS220 as a smart Wi-Fi light-switch dimmer, and the EP40A as a smart outdoor plug. TP-Link said all three were available through Amazon at launch.
The launch manufacturer’s suggested retail prices were $24.99 for KS200, $27.99 for KS220 and $29.99 for EP40A. Those figures and the reported Amazon availability are historical launch information, not evidence of today’s price, stock or regional hardware version.

| KS220 | Smart dimmer wall switch | 120 V, 60 Hz; up to 300 W incandescent/halogen or 150 W TRIAC-dimmable LED; leading-edge dimming | Not an outdoor plug | Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; Bluetooth 4.2 for setup |
| EP40A | Two-outlet outdoor smart plug | 125 V, 60 Hz; up to 15 A/1,875 W or 1/2 HP motor | IP64; two outlets individually controlled | Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi |
What is the difference between Kasa KS200 and KS220?
KS200 is the standard on/off switch
The KS200 provides remote and automated power switching; it does not provide brightness control. TP-Link lists a 100–120 V, 50/60 Hz input, a 15 A general-use maximum, up to 600 W of incandescent lighting and a 1/6 HP motor limit. Those are manufacturer ratings, so the connected load and the circuit still need to be suitable for the exact model and local electrical requirements.

KS220 is a dimmer
The KS220 is intended for compatible dimming circuits. Its published limits are 300 W for incandescent or halogen lighting and 150 W for LED lighting that is explicitly TRIAC-dimmable. It uses leading-edge, phase-cut dimming. A bulb being labelled “LED” does not by itself establish compatibility; verify that the lamp is dimmable and suitable for this dimmer technology.
How to choose
- Choose KS200 when you only need on/off control or your load is not approved for dimming.
- Choose KS220 when variable brightness is required and every connected lamp is compatible with its TRIAC/leading-edge specification and wattage limit.
- Before either installation, check the product’s wiring instructions, the circuit configuration, voltage, load and regional version. The published specifications do not establish a universal fit for every home.
Does the Kasa KS200 work with Apple HomeKit?
Yes. TP-Link lists the KS200 as compatible with Apple Home (HomeKit), Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings. The switch uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, while Bluetooth 4.2 is listed for setup. Confirm the model number, hardware revision and platform availability for your country before buying, because regional versions can differ.

Does the KS220 work with the same smart-home platforms?
Yes. The KS220 product information lists Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings, with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 for setup. Platform support does not remove the electrical requirement that the dimmer and the lighting load be compatible.
Is the Kasa EP40A outdoor plug waterproof?
TP-Link describes the EP40A as IP64 dustproof and waterproof for rough outdoor weather conditions. IP64 means protection against dust ingress and water splashing from all directions; it is not a promise that the plug may be submerged or exposed without regard to installation conditions. Keep the included weather-resistant socket cover capping unused outlets, as TP-Link instructs.

Outdoor capacity and outlet control
The EP40A is rated at 125 V, 60 Hz, with a maximum load of 15 A/1,875 W and a 1/2 HP motor rating. Its two sockets have separate power buttons and status LEDs and can be controlled independently. Check the starting current and duty cycle of motors, pumps, tools or lighting before connecting them; the maximum rating alone does not prove suitability for every device.
Wi-Fi placement matters
EP40A uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. TP-Link cites up to 300 feet in an open area, but walls, building materials, obstacles and other network conditions can reduce coverage substantially. Judge reach at the actual outdoor receptacle rather than treating the open-area figure as a guaranteed household distance.

- Identify the exact model and regional hardware version; KS200 and KS220 are wall switches, while EP40A is a plug-in outdoor device.
- For a wall switch, verify the circuit arrangement, voltage, connected load, bulb type and the manufacturer’s wiring requirements before turning off power and installing.
- For KS220, confirm every lamp is dimmable, TRIAC-compatible and below the applicable 300 W incandescent/halogen or 150 W LED limit.
- For EP40A, confirm the appliance or motor stays within 15 A/1,875 W and 1/2 HP, use the cover on unused sockets, and place the unit where its IP64 protection is appropriate.
- Check that reliable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches the installation point. Bluetooth is specified for setup on the switches, not as the ongoing control network.
- After installation, verify local manual operation and each outlet or dimming function before creating automations.
What the launch pricing does—and does not—tell you
The 2022 MSRPs document TP-Link’s launch positioning: KS200 at $24.99, KS220 at $27.99 and EP40A at $29.99. They should not be used as current retail prices. Check a live retailer listing for present price, inventory, shipping region and the exact hardware version.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a KS220 with any LED bulb?
No. The LED must be dimmable and compatible with the KS220’s TRIAC, leading-edge phase-cut method, and the total LED load must remain within 150 W.
Can the EP40A outlets be controlled separately?
Yes. TP-Link specifies individual control, with separate power buttons and status indicators for the two outlets.
Does IP64 mean I can submerge the EP40A?
No. IP64 covers dust protection and water splashing, not immersion. Keep unused sockets capped and follow the installation and electrical limits.
