Non-clumping clay cat litter is the cheapest useful salt alternative when you need grip quickly. It does not melt ice; it gives tires, boots and delivery workers traction on a surface you have already shoveled. For actual melting, use a labeled magnesium-chloride or calcium-magnesium-acetate (CMA) deicer suited to your driveway and the forecast.
What to spread instead of salt
Use non-clumping cat litter or coarse traction sand in a thin layer on residual ice. Both are abrasives, so they improve footing without the plant, concrete, metal and waterway load associated with heavy sodium-chloride use. Cat litter is often the cheapest option if a bag is already in your home; sand is useful when you need a larger quantity.
Neither product is a chemical deicer. A thick blanket will not melt a driveway in minutes, and no controlled time-to-melt figure has been established for cat litter.
How to clear the driveway with less product
- Shovel first. Remove loose snow so grit reaches the pavement rather than being buried in it.
- Break bonded patches. Use an ice chopper or the edge of a shovel carefully, especially on older or cracked concrete.
- Apply traction where it matters. Sprinkle non-clumping clay litter or coarse sand along tire tracks, the walking route and sloped areas. Use a broom or your boots to press it into the surface if it skitters.
- Add a real deicer only when melting is required. Choose a product labeled for your surface and the expected temperature, then follow its application rate. More is not automatically better.
- Clean up after thawing. Sweep litter or sand before rain carries it into storm drains, planting beds or waterways.
Does cat litter melt ice?
No. Cat litter supplies mechanical grip; it does not lower ice’s freezing point. If the goal is to expose pavement rather than merely prevent slipping, a labeled deicer is required. Do not describe litter as a product that de-ices a driveway in a measured number of minutes.

Choosing a chemical deicer
Deicers work by forming brine, but each has a practical temperature range and different trade-offs. The University of Maryland Extension comparison lists these approximate effective temperatures:
| Material | Approximate effective temperature | Key trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium chloride (rock salt) | About 20°F | Widely available and usually inexpensive, but overuse can injure plants, concrete, metal and waterways. |
| Magnesium chloride | About −13°F | Works in colder conditions than sodium chloride; still needs careful dosing and costs more. |
| Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) | About 20°F | Lower-impact choice for vegetation and infrastructure than sodium chloride in the extension comparison, but generally more expensive. |
| Potassium chloride | About 25°F | Higher temperature limit; use cautiously around plants and follow the label. |
| Urea | About 15°F | Limited low-temperature performance and can add nutrient pollution when it runs off. |
These are comparison values, not a guarantee for every formulation. Product concentration, pavement temperature, moisture and wind affect results. Check the package for the approved surface, temperature range and application rate.

- HIGH TRACTION: Stay safe this winter by adding traction to your slippery driveway and paths, without the need for harmful salts
- HOW IT WORKS: Rather than melting, the eco-friendly granules grip into ice and snow, creating a non-slip surface
- NON-CORROSIVE: Safe for concrete, interlocking stones, bricks, wooden deck and metal
- PET FRIENDLY: Safe for pets, this natural product has no added chemicals
- PLANT FRIENDLY: After the winter, simply sweep any leftover granules onto the lawn/garden because it benefits soil & vegetation
Why more rock salt stops helping
Rock salt has a temperature limit. Martin Tirado, CEO of the Snow and Ice Management Association, told the Associated Press in 2026: “And really, when you get to about 15 degrees or colder, you can keep applying more and more rock salt and it’s not going to do any more than it already does.” At that point, shoveling, chipping and traction material are more useful than repeatedly adding salt.
Even in milder weather, excess salt can accumulate in soil, burn vegetation, corrode metal and contribute to polluted runoff. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported that Massachusetts uses nearly half a million tons of road salt annually, illustrating the scale of the broader runoff problem.

- PEOPLE, PLANT & PET SAFE - Gives instant traction on ice and snow. Safe on eyes, skin, paws and if ingested. It’s all-around safe!
- ALL NATURAL - Composed of all-natural minerals and safe ingredients. 100% free of harmful salts, chloride and chemicals
- WORKS AT ALL TEMPERATURES - Works at any temperature and any thickness of ice (even black ice); Superior Absorbency - Very absorbent and abrasive to help clean up messes from animal waste, bodily fluids, oils, paints, and many other viscous liquids.
- SURFACE SAFE - 100% safe on all surfaces including decking, new concrete, pavers, etc; Anti-skid - Creates an instant skid-free, slip-free surface on ice and snow for foot traffic, pet traffic, car traffic and more.
- EXCELLENT SPREAD RATE - Use sparingly while getting excellent traction on large areas for long winters; Non-corrosive and Non-conductive - No damage to delicate machinery and will not short circuit expensive equipment.
How much salt is enough?
As a practical benchmark, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments guidance reproduced by Arlington County in 2026 says a 12-ounce coffee mug of salt is enough for a 20-foot driveway or ten sidewalk squares. Treat that as a maximum-style public guidance point, not a reason to cover every visible patch. Clear snow first and apply the smallest labeled amount that produces melting.
Protecting grass, concrete, pets and drains
- Grass and planting beds: Keep both brine and gritty runoff away from roots. No deicer should be assumed “plant-safe” without a product label and appropriate application.
- Concrete: Avoid aggressive chipping on damaged slabs and never use more chemical than directed. Freeze-thaw damage can worsen when water penetrates existing cracks.
- Metal: Chloride salts can accelerate corrosion on vehicles, railings and fasteners. Rinse tracked residue from metal when conditions permit.
- Pets: Prevent pets from licking treated surfaces and wipe paws after walks. “Pet-safe” is not a universal claim; verify the specific label and still use the minimum amount.
- Stormwater: Sweep up sand and litter after thawing and keep all residue out of catch basins and drains.
Which option fits your problem?
| Need | Best practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate grip on a mostly cleared driveway | Non-clumping cat litter or coarse sand | Fast traction, no melting required and little equipment beyond a shovel and broom. |
| Ice that must melt near the 20°F range | Labeled magnesium chloride, CMA or another suitable deicer | Provides chemical melting; select by surface and package temperature guidance. |
| Very cold conditions | Magnesium chloride, plus shoveling and grit | Its extension-comparison temperature is lower than sodium chloride’s, but performance still depends on the product and conditions. |
| Lowest runoff and residue | Thorough removal, then a light traction layer only where needed | Physical removal reduces chemical use and cleanup. |
Bottom line for an icy driveway
Shovel and chip first, then use a light layer of non-clumping cat litter or sand for traction. Choose magnesium chloride or CMA when you need ice to melt, follow the label, and sweep all abrasive residue up after thawing. The cheap alternative is a grip aid—not a fast ice-melting chemical.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest way to get traction on an icy driveway?
A thin layer of non-clumping cat litter or coarse sand is usually the lowest-cost traction aid, especially when you already have it. It improves grip but does not melt ice.
Can I use cat litter on concrete?
Yes, as a light traction layer after shoveling. Avoid mixing it into cracks or leaving it in place after thawing; sweep it up so residue does not enter soil or drains.
