Toys and Kids Furniture Plans: Choose and Build the Right Storage

Choose between a toy-storage bookcase, open bin or lidded chest, then build from that design’s dimensions, cut list, tools and materials.

For a children’s room or play space, start by choosing how kids should reach and put away their things: a bookcase with toy storage, an open book-and-toy bin, or a lidded toy chest. Each plan has its own dimensions, materials, tools, and assembly requirements, so use its cut list—not a generic shopping list—to plan the build.

Choose a storage style for the room

Bookcase with lower toy storage

A combined bookcase and toy-storage unit keeps books and toys in one footprint while giving them separate places. Kreg’s Bookcase with Toy Storage plan includes a PDF and cut list. Its requirements include two full sheets of 3/4-inch plywood, pocket screws and brad nails, and tools such as a circular saw, jigsaw, drill, pocket-hole jig, sander, square, table saw, tape measure and nail gun. Check the complete plan before buying materials: these are requirements for that design, not for every storage project.

Open book-and-toy bin

An open bin makes its contents visible and accessible without opening a lid. Kreg labels its DIY Book and Toy Storage Bin plan easy and lists lumber boards, a pocket-hole jig, sander, drill and saw. The page says dimensions can be modified, so work from the plan’s instructions and adapt the measurements to your space and intended use.

Lidded toy box

A chest keeps toys contained behind a lid, but it introduces a moving part that needs careful attention during construction and use. Kreg’s Toy Box (or storage chest) plan lists lumber, sheet materials, pocket screws, brad nails, wood glue and either a 30-inch piano hinge or soft-close toy-box hinges. Follow the plan’s precautions; the hinge options alone do not establish that a chest is safe.

Humble Crew Kids Toy Organizer with 12 Bins, 4 Tier Storage for Playroom
  • DURABLE AND STURDY: Engineered wood frame with steel dowels and stabilizing braces supports up to 20 lbs per tier so you never have to worry about tipping, bending, or daily wear and tear
  • EASY CLEANUP FOR LITTLE HANDS: 12 removable bins make it simple for kiddos to grab, play, and clean up on their own, helping build independence while keeping your playroom mess under control
  • SPACE SAVING: It’s compact size (34"W x 16"D x 31"H) makes this toy storage ideal for bedrooms, playrooms, classrooms, and smaller spaces
  • REMOVABLE BINS: Includes 12 (8 standard, 4 large) BPA and phthalate-free plastic bins to hold toys, books, games, and art supplies while keeping your playroom organized
  • SAFETY FIRST: Includes stabilizing braces, rounded corners, and a wall anchor anti-tip kit to help prevent tipping so your child’s play space stays safe and secure
  • Dimensions and cut list: Confirm the finished footprint, overall height and storage layout. For a modifiable plan, decide the dimensions before cutting and make sure the revised layout still follows sound construction practice.
  • Materials and thickness: Check board sizes, sheet-goods thickness and quantities. For example, the cited bookcase plan specifies two full sheets of 3/4-inch plywood, while TheDIYPlan’s box lists one 4-by-8-foot sheet of the same thickness.
  • Tools and joinery: Identify which tools the plan actually calls for and whether you have them or a suitable way to make the required cuts and joints. A pocket-hole jig is relevant when the design specifies pocket-hole joinery; match screw length and jig setup to that plan.
  • Access and containment: Decide whether children need open access to a bin or whether a chest’s lid suits the room. A lid adds hinge hardware and calls for attention to the plan’s precautions.
  • Skill and instructions: Note any skill label, cut diagrams and assembly steps. A label such as “easy” describes the plan page’s classification; it does not replace checking the actual operations against your experience.

Build from the selected plan’s list

There is no single materials or tool list for all toy storage furniture. Plywood, lumber, pocket screws, brad nails and wood glue appear in different combinations across the cited designs. Likewise, the plans call for different tools: do not assume that buying one jig or saw covers every project.

  1. Select the design and download its instructions. Review the complete cut list, material quantities, tool list and assembly sequence before purchasing supplies.
  2. Check the fit. Measure the intended location and compare it with the plan’s finished dimensions. For a design that permits changes, settle the revised measurements before laying out cuts.
  3. Prepare the specified materials and tools. Use the thicknesses and hardware named by the plan. If it calls for pocket holes, follow the plan’s jig setup and screw specifications rather than substituting by guesswork.
  4. Follow the assembly instructions and precautions. Make and assemble parts in the sequence the plan gives, paying particular attention to moving parts on a lidded chest.

Understand toy-safety rules and furniture scope

In the United States, the CPSC’s Toy Safety FAQ identifies ASTM F963-23 as the toy safety standard incorporated by 16 C.F.R. part 1250, effective April 20, 2024. The CPSC says toys intended or designed primarily for children 12 and under must be third-party tested by a CPSC-accepted laboratory and certified by the manufacturer or importer in a Children’s Product Certificate, subject to applicable requirements.

That does not mean every piece of furniture built for a child is regulated as a toy. The CPSC’s Toy Safety Business Guidance defines a toy as an object designed, manufactured or marketed as a plaything for children under 14 and lists furniture as excluded, except toy counterparts. The toy-standard scope and testing or certification requirements are distinct; the applicable standard can also depend on the product’s date of manufacture. These rules concern product classification and applicable requirements, not a certification supplied by a DIY plan.

Some indoor play items may be classified differently from ordinary furnishings. CPSC’s Playground Equipment guidance says home playground equipment meant for indoor use, such as a small slide, may be considered a children’s toy depending partly on whether play elements are fixed or portable and on other features. That classification guidance should not be generalized to every playroom furnishing.
