Yes—but the headline refers to a specific product, Life Lift Systems’ Vortex Vault Tornado Shelter Bed, not to ordinary telescoping or adjustable bed frames. A 2019 New Atlas report described a steel shelter built into the bed frame and said the unit telescoped upward for access. Its account also reported testing and approval by Texas Tech’s Wind Institute, but that claim has not been independently verified here, and the report does not establish whether the product is available today. A bed frame is not a tornado shelter unless it is specifically designed, tested, installed, and documented for that purpose.
What the Vortex Vault bed was reported to do
In its June 5, 2019 article, New Atlas reported that Life Lift Systems’ Vortex Vault combined a steel protective enclosure with a bed frame. In the telescoping version, a powered mechanism raised the bed structure to allow access to the shelter below. The article described a four-motor scissor lift, household-power operation with a backup battery, and a requirement to secure the unit to a concrete pad.
New Atlas also described slope-top and non-raising platform variants, along with multiple bed sizes. These are details reported in 2019, not independently verified current specifications. The same article said the product had been available through dealers in 20 states at that time and that pricing varied by location; those dated details do not confirm current sellers, stock, installation, or price.
What the testing claim does—and does not—establish
New Atlas attributed an EF5 testing-and-approval claim to Texas Tech’s Wind Institute. Without an underlying test report or current certification listing, that should be treated as a claim reported by the article, not as a verified certification. It also does not mean FEMA approved or endorsed the product.

FEMA’s Safe Rooms for Tornadoes and Hurricanes (FEMA P-361, December 2024 edition) explains safe-room guidance in relation to ICC 500 and includes criteria and best practices beyond that standard’s minimum requirements. Its guidance addresses wind design and protection from wind-borne debris. In the specific context of FEMA funding criteria, residential safe rooms use a 250 mph tornado design speed regardless of location. That is not a universal statement that every shelter everywhere must meet the same requirement.
When assessing any shelter, look for documentation of its design and debris-impact performance, anchoring and site requirements, capacity and access, applicable permits and installation qualifications, and maintenance and emergency-egress provisions. Site conditions matter too, including flood hazards. A label, product description, or resemblance to a reinforced room is not a substitute for applicable design and installation documentation.

Where to shelter if you do not have a documented safe room
FEMA’s tornado safety guidance says, “The safest place to be is an underground shelter, basement, or safe room.” If none is available, go to a small, windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest level of a sturdy building. FEMA advises people in mobile homes to leave for the nearest sturdy building or shelter; a mobile home is not a safe place during a tornado.
Use a weather radio or local media to follow storm updates, as FEMA recommends, but remember that alerts help you decide when to act: they do not physically protect you. A radio is not a shelter.

How to judge a shelter-bed claim before relying on it
- Confirm the exact model. “Telescoping bed frame” describes a mechanism, not a tornado-protection rating.
- Ask for the evidence. Request the applicable test documentation, design criteria, and any current certification or listing, and verify what each one covers.
- Check the installation. Confirm anchoring, foundation, site, permitting, and installer requirements for the specific location.
- Plan for real use. Check occupant capacity, how people enter, whether the mechanism works during a power failure, and how occupants exit in an emergency.
- Verify current support. Establish whether a seller and qualified installer are available, and obtain warranty and maintenance details directly before making a decision.
The 2019 report is useful as a description of the Vortex Vault concept, but it is not enough to establish present-day availability or whether a particular unit meets current needs. Until a product’s documentation and installation are verified, follow established tornado shelter guidance rather than treating a bed frame as protection.
