Temperature ratings help compare bags; they cannot guarantee that every sleeper will feel comfortable.
What makes a sleeping bag suitable for indoor use?
Indoor use can mean a child’s sleepover, an overnight cabin stay or an extra bed for a guest. REI lists sleepovers and cabin stays among sleeping-bag use cases, and distinguishes campground bags—which prioritize comfort over low weight and compact packing—from backpacking bags. That makes room and ease of use sensible priorities for occasional indoor sleeping. The cited guidance does not establish which bag is best for routine bedroom use.
Before choosing, consider who will sleep in the bag, how much room they want to move, and how cool the room is likely to be. A bag intended for carrying on a hike may prioritize weight and packability over the spacious feel that matters more at home.
How to choose a temperature rating for each season
Start with the expected room temperature, then compare the rating type shown for each bag. REI defines a comfort rating as the temperature at which a cold sleeper might feel comfortable, and a lower-limit rating as the temperature at which a warm sleeper might still feel comfortable. Those figures describe different conditions, so do not treat them as interchangeable.

A rating is a comparison aid, not a personal comfort promise. REI notes that warmth in actual use varies with the sleeper and conditions, including whether someone tends to sleep warm or cold, metabolism and the sleeping pad. For seasonal use, check the room’s likely temperature and the exact rating stated by the manufacturer rather than assuming that a “four-season” label guarantees comfort in every season or home.
Choose a shape that feels comfortable
Shape affects both roominess and the volume inside the bag that needs to be warmed. A rectangular or roomy design gives more space to move, while a more tapered shape is less spacious. For indoor sleepovers or guest use, prioritize the fit and shape the product specification actually describes; do not assume every bag with a particular label offers the same amount of room.

Down or synthetic insulation?
There is no universal insulation choice for indoor sleeping. Consider the particular setting and product details rather than assuming one type is always warmer or more comfortable. REI notes that synthetic insulation can be used in moisture-prone areas such as a footbox and draft collar. Check the bag’s own description for its insulation and construction before deciding whether it suits the intended use.
When is a sleeping-bag liner useful?
A liner is optional. It can be used on its own on hot nights or placed inside a bag for a modest warmth boost; the guidance does not specify a temperature increase. A liner can also provide a washable layer between the sleeper and the bag, helping protect the bag from body dirt, oils, sweat and sunscreen. Check the sleeping bag’s manufacturer instructions for cleaning and care rather than assuming every bag can be washed the same way.

A simple checklist before you choose
- Use: Identify whether the bag is for a sleepover, cabin stay, guest bed or regular bedroom use.
- Space: Compare the stated shape and fit with the sleeper’s preference for room to move.
- Warmth: Match the expected room temperature to the rating type the product actually lists.
- Conditions: Account for whether the sleeper tends to feel warm or cold and what sleeping surface will be used.
- Care: Consider a liner if you want a separate washable layer, and follow the bag’s own care instructions.
REI’s guidance provides useful use cases and selection criteria, but it is not an indoor comparative test and does not name a model-level winner. Choose based on the intended sleeper, room temperature, fit and the particular bag’s disclosed specifications.
