An online store is better suited to someone selling tools as an ongoing business.
Prepare the tool and document its condition
Before listing, clean the tool and check what works, what is worn, and what is missing. Replace worn or broken parts if it makes sense, or account for them in the asking price. Be straightforward about defects: accurate condition details help buyers judge whether the tool suits their needs.
Take clear photographs of the actual item from multiple angles. Use a simple background and good lighting, and steady your phone or tablet. Include close views of wear, damage, model labels, and included accessories. WOOD Magazine’s used-tool selling guide recommends showing the item itself rather than substituting manufacturer images.
Gather the owner’s manual and any jigs or accessories included in the sale. State clearly what is and is not included so the buyer knows what they are getting.

Set a price and write a useful listing
Search for comparable tools, ideally the same model and similar condition, before choosing an asking price. Compare like with like and adjust for wear, missing parts, included accessories, and the effort or cost of collection or shipping. An asking price is your decision; a specialist buyer’s offer, by contrast, is a quote to accept or decline.
Use a specific title that identifies the tool and model when possible, rather than a vague heading such as “Saw for sale.” In the description, summarize its features, working condition, defects, and included items. WOOD Magazine suggests that 30–50 words may be enough for many tool descriptions, but add detail whenever it is needed to explain condition or collection arrangements.

For a heavy item, say whether the buyer must collect it and whether loading or delivery help is available. Keep your home address and personal contact details out of the public listing; share necessary handoff details privately when appropriate. These are recommendations from WOOD Magazine’s guide, not universal requirements imposed by every marketplace.
Choose the sales route that fits your tool

A local buyer can make collection easier for a large or heavy machine and avoids preparing it for parcel delivery. You retain control of the asking price, but you also handle buyer messages, payment, and handoff. Before using any marketplace, check its current listing, payment, and safety rules; platform features and guidance can change.

What to know about a specialist buyer in the UK
Sell Tools Online UK says it considers new or used branded hand, power, and air tools, requires items to be in working order, and excludes petrol tools. Its process is offer-based: if the seller accepts, the company says it provides a postage label; the seller packs the item, and payment is by bank transfer after receipt and testing. The company states it pays within 24 hours of receiving an item. That timing is the company’s own claim, not a general service standard. Its page also describes alternatives for large or bulk items. When to build an online store
If you plan to sell tools repeatedly, an owned store gives you a place to present products and manage inventory and orders as a business. Shopify recommends detailed product descriptions and images, promotion through social media and Google, and consideration of competitor prices, location, shipping, logistics, and storage when setting prices. A store also means taking responsibility for ongoing operations; it is usually more work than listing one used tool. Review current platform costs, payment terms, and regional availability before choosing a service.

Arrange a safe handoff and payment
For an in-person sale, screen messages and arrange the meeting with personal safety in mind. WOOD Magazine’s guide recommends meeting in public where possible, bringing another person, and ending a meeting if you feel uncomfortable. Its older guidance prefers cash for local sales; payment options and marketplace protections vary, so check current platform instructions and local advice before agreeing how to be paid.
If you accept cash, inspect it carefully. The WOOD guide mentions a counterfeit detector pen as one possible aid, but a pen is not a guarantee that a banknote is genuine and is not necessary to list or sell a tool. For any transaction, do not hand over the tool until you have confirmed payment in the way you agreed, and do not rely on screenshots or messages as proof that funds have arrived.
