The Best Range Hood for Your Kitchen: How to Choose the Right Type and Size

A practical guide to choosing a range hood: when to vent outdoors, how to compare width and airflow, and what ducting, noise and maintenance mean for your kitchen.

The best range hood for most kitchens is a correctly sized model that vents outdoors. It removes cooking air rather than filtering and returning it, but the right choice depends on whether you can run ductwork, your cooking surface and hood placement, and the airflow your installation can support. If exterior venting is not practical, a recirculating hood is a fallback—not an equivalent substitute—and requires regular carbon-filter replacement.

Start with whether you can vent outdoors

A range hood is the most common kitchen ventilation strategy, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends exhausting combustion products outdoors. Outdoor venting is also preferable for reducing cooking-related particulate matter. EPA identifies airflow, measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM), and sound, usually measured in sones, as key selection criteria. EPA remodeling and indoor-air-quality guidance and EPA indoor particulate-matter guidance.

Ducted hoods

A ducted hood carries air through a duct to an exterior termination. Before choosing one, confirm that there is a feasible route through a wall or ceiling and out of the building, and plan for the duct diameter, length, elbows, termination and any required make-up air. These details affect real-world performance: ENERGY STAR notes that ducting strongly affects a fan’s airflow, noise and energy use, so a maximum-CFM label alone does not tell you how the installed system will perform. Recirculating hoods

A ductless hood draws air through grease and carbon filters, then returns it to the room. It can capture grease and reduce some odors, but it does not exhaust cooking air or combustion products outdoors. Carbon filters also require ongoing replacement: the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) says they cannot be cleaned and should be replaced every 3–6 months, depending on cooking habits. Check that compatible replacement filters are readily available before buying. HVI consumer information and FAQ.

Choose a hood shape that fits the room and cooking surface

Hood width is only part of the fit. The hood must have useful capture area over the burners, and its placement and mounting height affect how well it catches rising heat and cooking emissions. Follow the range and hood manufacturers’ installation instructions and check applicable local requirements.

Common configurations

  • Under-cabinet: Fits below a wall cabinet and can be ducted outdoors or configured for recirculation. Check cabinet depth and the available duct route.
  • Wall chimney: Mounts on the wall above the range, with a visible chimney section concealing or connecting to the duct. It needs suitable wall support and a clear path to the exterior.
  • Island: Hangs above a cooking surface on an island. Because it is exposed on more sides, capture geometry and the route through the ceiling deserve particular attention.
  • Insert: Fits into a custom hood enclosure. Confirm that the insert’s capture area, blower arrangement and service access work with the enclosure design.
  • Downdraft: Draws air down or alongside the cooking surface. Its placement differs from an overhead hood, so its CFM should not be compared directly with an overhead model without accounting for capture geometry and installation.

Size airflow to the installation, not just the hood label

EPA cites 100 CFM as a typical-range reference based on ASHRAE and HVI guidance; it is not a universal minimum or a one-size-fits-all specification. HVI’s 2008 brochure gives context-dependent guidance of 100 CFM per linear foot for a wall installation and 150 CFM per linear foot for an island installation. Those figures are starting points, not substitutes for checking the appliance, hood position, duct design and local code. A 30-inch hood over a 30-inch range may match by width, but that fact alone does not establish adequate capture or airflow. Check the hood’s specified mounting height and coverage, the cooking appliance’s requirements, and whether the planned duct can deliver the needed performance. Larger fan capacity is not automatically better if the installation is poorly matched or creates a pressure problem.

Compare tested airflow and noise fairly

When comparing models, look for HVI certification or another clearly documented test method. HVI maintains a certified-products directory that is updated at least monthly and provides independently tested airflow and sound ratings; its certification program also covers energy. Certification gives shoppers a more consistent basis for comparison than unverified maximum claims. The directory listed more than 2,800 residential ventilation products in HVI’s September 2, 2026 update; that count is time-specific and the listings can change. For noise, compare sones at comparable operating points—ideally the speeds you expect to use—not just each model’s maximum setting. A high-capacity hood may be loud at full speed but quieter at a lower setting; ratings are meaningful only when compared under like conditions. A remote or inline blower may move some fan noise away from the cooking area, but it must be selected and installed as part of a compatible system.

Check ductwork, make-up air and combustion safety

Before purchase, map the duct route and confirm the hood’s required duct diameter, permitted length and elbow configuration against the manufacturer’s instructions. Include the exterior cap or termination and make sure the route does not simply discharge into an attic or another enclosed space. Poorly matched or restrictive ductwork can reduce airflow and increase noise.

Exhausting a large volume of air can depressurize a home. In homes with fuel-burning appliances, that pressure change can contribute to backdrafting, which can draw combustion products indoors. EPA cautions that larger fans may require make-up air. Its Indoor airPLUS Version 2 specifications (2023) recommend demand-controlled exhaust above 160 CFM, and above 200 CFM for gas ranges. These are program reference points, not a replacement for local code or project-specific assessment. For a high-airflow hood or a home with combustion appliances, ask a qualified contractor about make-up air, combustion safety testing and permit requirements before installation. Plan for filter cleaning and replacement parts

Most ducted hoods use washable grease filters, such as mesh or baffle types; follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and schedule. A recirculating model also needs a compatible carbon filter for odor control, and that filter must be replaced rather than washed. Check filter availability, replacement cost and access before committing to a model. Also consider whether bulbs or other lighting components can be replaced and whether the blower and filters are accessible for service.

A practical buying checklist

  • Can you exhaust outdoors, and is there a practical route for the duct?
  • Does the hood cover the cooking surface appropriately for its mounting type and installation height?
  • Are airflow and sound ratings independently tested or clearly documented?
  • Do the duct size, length, elbows and termination match the hood’s installation requirements?
  • Could the fan require make-up air or combustion-safety review in your home?
  • Can you clean the grease filters and obtain replacement carbon filters or service parts?
