For most homes in cooling season, set the AC fan to Auto. Auto normally runs the blower only during a heating or cooling call, which avoids unnecessary fan electricity and reduces the chance of moisture being returned to the room in humid weather. Choose On when you specifically need continuous air mixing, want to operate a compatible whole-house air cleaner, or are following ventilation guidance. Thermostat and HVAC controls vary, so confirm the behavior in your equipment manual.
The claim that all HVAC experts agree is too broad: the best setting depends on whether your priority is humidity control, operating cost, temperature mixing, air cleaning, or ventilation.

What Auto and On actually do
| Setting | Typical operation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | The fan runs when the system is actively heating or cooling. | Routine cooling when you want to limit fan runtime, energy use and off-cycle moisture movement. |
| On | The fan keeps running between heating and cooling cycles on the controls described by Honeywell Home and Trane. | More even air mixing, continuous circulation for a compatible air cleaner, or a defined ventilation objective. |
| Circulate | On supported Honeywell thermostats, the fan runs about 35% of the time—roughly 20 minutes per hour—minus time already used for heating or cooling. | A compromise when intermittent mixing is useful without continuous operation. This is not a universal thermostat standard. |
Honeywell Home’s guide was updated September 2, 2025. Trane’s guidance for the XL824, XL850 and XL1050 controls describes the same basic Auto-versus-On distinction, while also noting model-specific exceptions.
Why Auto is usually the cooling-season default
It limits off-cycle fan electricity and heat
With On selected, the blower uses electricity even when the compressor is idle. The fan’s electrical energy becomes heat inside the home, and the air conditioner must remove that heat later. Natural Resources Canada says continuous operation can increase operating costs compared with automatic or on-off operation. The actual difference depends on fan power, runtime, electricity rates and system controls; there is no single universal dollar or kilowatt-hour saving for Auto.

It is safer for humidity in humid climates
During cooling, the evaporator coil collects water from indoor air. If the fan continues after the compressor stops, air can pass over the wet coil and return some of that moisture to the room. Natural Resources Canada identifies this re-evaporation risk in more humid climates. The effect is system- and weather-dependent, not a guaranteed humidity increase in every home.
It matches how efficiency ratings are commonly stated
Natural Resources Canada notes that the cited air-conditioner efficiency rating assumes automatic fan operation. A rating should not be treated as a promise of a particular bill reduction when a system is operated continuously in On mode.

When On can be the better choice
You need more uniform temperatures
Continuous circulation can mix warmer and cooler areas, which may reduce room-to-room temperature differences. It does not fix an undersized system, blocked duct, failed damper or inadequate insulation; persistent hot or cold rooms require diagnosis rather than simply selecting On.

You have a whole-house air cleaner designed for continuous circulation
Natural Resources Canada and AprilAire describe continuous fan operation as useful for electronic or whole-house air-cleaning equipment. Follow the cleaner and HVAC manufacturer’s airflow requirements, because some systems are designed for intermittent operation and others are not.

Your immediate goal is ventilation or air mixing
CDC/NIOSH recommends using the fan On in guidance aimed at increasing air circulation and mixing. That recommendation addresses a ventilation objective; it does not establish that On is more efficient for cooling or better for humidity control. Use the setting that matches the goal you are pursuing.
Does leaving the fan On raise indoor humidity?
It can, particularly in humid climates and on systems that leave a wet evaporator coil after a cooling cycle. The continuing airflow may re-evaporate condensate. The risk is more relevant when the fan runs for long off-cycles, while a system with different coil, duct or control behavior may show a smaller effect.

U.S. Department of Energy Building America work on hot-humid-climate humidity control used controls and airflow strategies intended to improve dehumidification, including minimizing off-cycle ventilation in the studied approach. Those project findings are not a universal setting for every residence.

Humidity-based exceptions
Trane describes a humidity-related fan exception on the cited XL824/850/1050 thermostat models. A thermostat may briefly operate the fan according to humidity logic even when the user selects a mode that appears to imply otherwise.

Manufacturer labels are not interchangeable
Honeywell’s Circulate feature and its approximately 35% runtime description apply to supported Honeywell models, not to every thermostat labeled Circulate. Read the exact manual for your thermostat, air handler and any communicating control system.
A practical way to choose the setting
- Start with Auto for ordinary residential cooling, especially if humidity control and lower unnecessary runtime are priorities.
- Use On temporarily when you need to mix air between rooms, support a compatible whole-house air cleaner or meet a specific circulation plan.
- Consider Circulate if your thermostat offers it and intermittent mixing is enough. On Honeywell models covered by its guide, that means approximately 20 minutes per hour less time already spent heating or cooling.
- Check indoor results. If rooms remain uneven, humidity rises, or the system runs abnormally, inspect filters, registers, ducts, controls and condensate drainage rather than assuming the fan switch is the root cause.
- Use the equipment manual before relying on a mode name, particularly with variable-speed, communicating or humidity-controlled systems.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
- Auto generally reduces off-cycle fan operation compared with On.
- Continuous operation can increase operating cost and, in humid conditions, may return moisture to the space.
- On can improve mixing and support some whole-house air cleaners.
- Ventilation guidance may favor On for air circulation, which is a different objective from cooling efficiency.
- No generalizable study figure establishes one fixed Auto-versus-On bill saving for all homes.
Natural Resources Canada provides the cooling and humidity trade-offs; Honeywell Home and Trane document control behavior for their products; CDC/NIOSH addresses circulation and ventilation; and DOE Building America material concerns hot-humid-climate dehumidification strategies. Together, these sources support a goal- and system-dependent decision, not unanimous expert agreement.
