Diatomaceous earth (DE) works as a pest-control dust only when a crawling insect contacts it while it is dry. For best results, identify the pest, address food, water, and shelter where practical, then apply a thin, targeted layer of an EPA-registered product whose label permits the pest and location. Avoid breathing the dust, and follow the product label for application and reapplication.
What diatomaceous earth can—and cannot—do
DE is a dry dust made from fossilized diatoms. It is a contact treatment, not a bait: the EPA label for one product states, “Direct contact with dry dust is required for effective control.” Moisture can reduce its usefulness, and a thick pile is not necessary.

Start with integrated pest management (IPM): identify the pest, monitor whether its numbers warrant treatment, and reduce conditions that attract or shelter it before choosing a control. The EPA describes IPM as “an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices.” EPA: Integrated Pest Management principles

How to apply DE indoors
- Choose the right product. Use an EPA-registered pesticide product whose label covers both the pest and the site. Food-grade and pool-grade powders are not interchangeable with labeled pesticide products.
- Prepare the area. Remove or cover food and feed. Keep people and pets away from treated dust as the label directs.
- Apply sparingly in permitted locations. Use a hand duster to place a light layer in dry cracks and crevices or other label-approved sites, such as along baseboards, around sinks, cabinets, appliances, attics, basements, windowsills, door frames, foundations, or ant trails.
- Keep the dust dry and targeted. Treat locations where insects are likely to contact it. If a surface becomes damp or the dust is disturbed, follow the label for whether and how to reapply.
For the cited EPA label’s food-handling directions, food and feed must be removed or covered, and an individual spot treatment must not exceed 2 square feet. Use only the label’s specified crack-and-crevice or spot-treatment method in these areas; do not apply broadly across food-contact surfaces. EPA DiaSource product label
Using DE in a vegetable garden
A 2026 Cooperative Extension response says food-grade DE can be used safely in a vegetable garden and may be left to incorporate into soil over winter. That does not make every DE product suitable for crops: use it only where the specific product label allows. Cooperative Extension guidance on DE in vegetable gardens

Monitor and identify a damaging pest before treating, rather than dusting plants preventively without cause. DE affects insects that contact the dust, so limit applications to justified areas and times; avoid indiscriminate treatment of blooms. Rain, irrigation, and other moisture can reduce effectiveness. Consult your local Cooperative Extension for crop-specific advice.
Safety: avoid airborne dust
“Natural” does not mean harmless. The cited EPA label warns that DE dust can cause moderate eye irritation, directs users to avoid breathing it, and recommends adequate ventilation. It calls for a suitable NIOSH/MSHA-approved dust mask for prolonged exposure. Wash after handling, and follow the product label’s directions for keeping people, pets, and food away from treated areas. EPA DiaSource product label

For bed bugs, the EPA specifically advises using only desiccant products registered as pesticides and says, “Pool or food grade diatomaceous earth should not be used.” The agency notes that inhalation can be harmful and that pesticide products use a different diatom size. There is no universal dose or fixed reapplication schedule established by the cited authoritative sources. Follow the product label rather than a calendar: reapply only as directed and when the permitted treatment site is dry. If pests persist, reassess the identification, entry points, moisture, food, and shelter conditions, and consider professional IPM. Do not assume DE alone will eradicate an infestation.
