You can replace a mailbox lock quickly only when you own or control the compartment, can open it lawfully, and have a replacement that matches the original lock. There is no reliable, tested five-minute procedure for every mailbox. First determine whether the box is privately owned, a private compartment in a cluster unit, or USPS-controlled equipment; the wrong replacement or an unauthorized repair can leave the mailbox unusable.
1. Confirm who controls the mailbox
Ownership determines whether you may replace the lock. For privately owned cluster box units (CBUs), USPS says the builder or property owner provides lock and key service, while USPS provides the master access lock used for delivery. See the USPS Postal Operations Manual 632, section 3-2.

| Mailbox situation | Who should handle the lock | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Individual mailbox or privately owned customer compartment | Owner, property manager, or locksmith | Replace the customer lock only after confirming the correct model and fit. |
| Private CBU serving several residents | Builder, property owner, or property manager | Ask the responsible owner before ordering parts; do not alter the carrier-access lock. |
| USPS-controlled equipment or carrier-access hardware | USPS | Use the Postal Service process and approved models described in Postal Bulletin 22623. |
If you cannot establish ownership or responsibility, stop and contact the property manager or the appropriate USPS office. Do not drill, pry, pick, or force a locked compartment.

- Face diameter
- Lock-body length and diameter
- Mounting or retaining method
- Cam length, profile, and orientation
- Key rotation and removal behavior
Mailbox locks are not one universal size. LSDA lists a kit described as fitting most North American boxes but supplies five cam choices. Its MB5MC specification is a ⅞-inch face diameter and 1³⁄₁₆-inch length; MB5MCE is a 1-inch face diameter and 1-inch length. Those are product specifications, not proof that either part fits your mailbox. Check the LSDA mailbox-lock sheet against your measurements.
Model-specific operating details matter too. For example, CompX’s C8716 mailbox lock specifies clockwise rotation and key removal only when locked, and identifies particular replacement applications. Treat that behavior as a model requirement, not a general rule for every mailbox.

3. Prepare for a controlled replacement
- Have the exact replacement, its supplied cam or cams, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions available.
- Keep the original lock assembled until the new lock’s face, body, cam, and retaining hardware have been compared.
- Work with the door or compartment open so a mismatched cam cannot trap the door closed.
- Keep all keys and small retaining parts together.
4. Replace the lock using the exact model instructions
There is no single safe removal sequence for all mailbox assemblies: retaining nuts, clips, cam positions, and access arrangements differ. Use this model-dependent workflow rather than forcing a generic method:
- Open and support the door. Work only with authorized access and the compartment open.
- Document the old orientation. Photograph the front and inside, including the cam’s position when the lock is unlocked and locked.
- Remove the retaining hardware specified by the manufacturer. Do not bend the door, enlarge the opening, or substitute hardware.
- Transfer or install the matching cam. Match its length, shape, and orientation to the original; use the cam option specified for the lock and mailbox.
- Seat and secure the new lock. The face should sit correctly in the door and the retaining method should be fully engaged without wobble.
- Test before closing. With the door still open, turn the key through the documented positions, confirm the cam clears the strike, and verify the key-removal behavior. Then close and reopen the compartment several times.
If any step conflicts with the mailbox or lock manual, follow that manual. A part that appears to fit but has the wrong cam or rotation can prevent the door from locking, unlocking, or closing.

5. Know when the five-minute goal is unrealistic
The “under five minutes” wording is not a measured or guaranteed installation time. It may be possible for a familiar, already-open private box with a direct-fit replacement, but access, corrosion, missing keys, unusual retaining hardware, or an incorrect cam can make the job longer. Never trade safe identification for speed.
6. Special rules for conventional curbside mailboxes
Traditional and contemporary curbside mailbox designs covered by USPS SPUSPS-STD-7B01 may not use locks. USPS also states that carriers are not responsible for opening locked mailboxes or accepting keys. If your curbside box is a conventional design, verify that a lock is permitted before attempting a modification.

7. Stop and get help if any of these conditions apply
- The compartment is locked and you do not have authorized access.
- You cannot identify the mailbox owner or the carrier-access equipment.
- The replacement’s dimensions or cam do not match.
- The lock is damaged, seized, or mounted in a way the instructions do not cover.
- The mailbox is part of USPS-controlled equipment.
For a privately owned box, a locksmith or property manager can identify and replace an inaccessible assembly. For USPS-controlled equipment, use USPS’s approved service and ordering process rather than a consumer lock kit.
