For light soil, Oregon Metro’s baking-soda-and-salt paste takes five minutes to sit; for heavier buildup, its damp baking-soda method sits overnight. A separate 3M recipe uses baking soda paste for 12 hours and vinegar during cleanup. These are published recipes, not comparative test results, and they are not suitable for every oven. Check your model’s manual before applying any homemade cleaner.
Choose a method that suits your oven
Start with the owner’s manual for your exact model and the surface you plan to clean. Manufacturer guidance can differ: Bosch recommends warm, soapy water and a soft cloth for its ovens, while Oregon Metro and 3M publish baking-soda recipes. Bosch also says vinegar is not necessary or advisable for its ovens. Treat each recipe below as source-specific guidance—not a universal instruction.

Recipe 1: Salt and baking-soda paste for general grime
Oregon Metro’s general oven-cleaning recipe combines equal parts salt and baking soda with enough water to make a paste. It recommends applying the paste to oven walls, avoiding heating elements and wiring.
- Mix equal parts salt and baking soda in a bowl.
- Add water gradually until the mixture forms a spreadable paste.
- Apply it to soiled oven walls, keeping it away from heating elements and wiring.
- Let it stand for 5 minutes.
- Wipe with a damp cloth. For heavier spills, brush them and rinse the area.
Oregon Metro’s safe cleaning recipes provide the quantities and directions; the five-minute interval is the recipe’s dwell time, not a measured performance claim.

Recipe 2: Damp baking soda for heavier buildup
For more stubborn soil, Oregon Metro advises covering the dirty area with baking soda and keeping it very damp overnight. This approach takes longer and requires checking the oven periodically to stop the powder from drying out.
- Cover the dirty area with baking soda.
- Spray with water until the baking soda is very damp.
- Re-spray every few hours to keep it moist.
- Leave it overnight, then scoop away the loosened material.
- Rinse the oven well. Oregon Metro says a blunt knife may help lift large crusty material.
Oregon Metro also describes substituting washing soda for half the baking soda on particularly tough jobs. It cautions that washing soda is more caustic, and advises wearing gloves and rinsing thoroughly. This is a stronger optional variation, not the default recipe; use it only if your oven’s instructions permit it.

Recipe 3: 3M’s overnight baking-soda paste
3M / Scotch-Brite lists a paste of 1/2 cup baking soda and 3 tablespoons water, along with 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar, cleaning sponges, and gloves. Its page does not state a publication year. The instructions call for removing racks, applying the paste to non-heating surfaces and corners, and leaving it for 12 hours.
- Remove the oven racks.
- Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 3 tablespoons water to make a paste.
- Spread the paste on non-heating surfaces and in corners.
- Leave it for 12 hours.
- Use a damp zero-scratch sponge to remove the paste.
- For remaining paste, 3M’s instructions say to spray vinegar to make it foam, then wipe with a damp sponge. Use more vinegar or water as needed.
This is 3M / Scotch-Brite’s published method, not evidence that vinegar or the paste is appropriate for every oven. Bosch’s advice for Bosch ovens differs: “Cleaning an oven with vinegar is neither necessary nor advisable.”

When warm, soapy water is the better choice
Bosch recommends warm, soapy water and a soft cloth for its ovens. If your manual does not approve a homemade paste or vinegar—or you are unsure which surfaces can tolerate them—follow the model’s instructions instead. See Bosch’s oven-cleaner guidance and its advice about vinegar.
Protect the oven while cleaning
- Check the manual first. Confirm the approved cleaner and method for your exact model, interior surface, and cleaning mode. Bosch directs owners to the manual for self-cleaning instructions.
- Keep cleaner off heating elements and wiring. Oregon Metro specifically gives this caution for its paste method.
- Protect the door gasket. GE warns that cleaner on the gasket can deteriorate it. Its vinegar-solution or baking-soda-paste suggestions apply to the inner oven door, not automatically to every oven surface. Follow GE’s inner-door guidance for the relevant area.
- Remove racks and accessories before a self-cleaning cycle. Bosch and KitchenAid both instruct owners to remove racks before using the feature; KitchenAid also says to remove cookware. Check your own manual for the exact procedure. See KitchenAid’s self-cleaning steps.
- Rinse residue away. Oregon Metro calls for thorough rinsing after its heavier-grime method and its washing-soda variation.
How to decide between the recipes
- Compatibility comes first: choose only a method allowed for your model and the surface being cleaned.
- Match the method to the soil: the five-minute paste is Oregon Metro’s general option; damp baking soda left overnight is its heavier-soil option.
- Allow for the time and cleanup: the published methods range from a five-minute dwell to an overnight wait, and the longer methods require more attention to removal and rinsing.
- Use the specified tools: the 3M method calls for a damp zero-scratch sponge; Oregon Metro mentions a damp cloth or brush for its general recipe.
The cited recipes do not establish a comparative success rate or prove that one works better than another. Follow the appliance maker’s instructions when they differ from a recipe.
