The best fly trap depends on the fly and where it is appearing. A quiet indoor glue trap is not interchangeable with a strong-smelling outdoor bait bag, and neither one will eliminate flies breeding in a drain, trash container, manure, compost, or overwatered plant soil.

For most indoor rooms, the Zevo Flying Insect Trap is the best all-around choice. The RESCUE! Fruit Fly Trap is better for tiny flies around produce and sinks. For large outdoor house-fly populations, choose the RESCUE! Disposable Fly Trap or reusable TERRO Fly Magnet T380. If you want a low-odor electronic outdoor device, the DynaTrap DT1130SR is the strongest fit. The Catchmaster Clear Window Traps are the simplest no-power option for windows, doors, garages, and entry points.

These recommendations are for common U.S. household, garage, patio, workshop, poultry, pet, and outbuilding situations. Traps work best as one part of integrated pest management: remove the breeding material, close entry points, and use the trap to reduce remaining adult flies and monitor whether the problem is declining. Texas A&M AgriLife and UC IPM both caution that traps alone rarely solve an established fly infestation.

First, identify the fly

“Fly” is a broad description, not a single pest. Correct identification matters because attractants are species-specific. A fruit-fly lure may catch little or nothing if the insects are actually drain flies or fungus gnats, while a powerful outdoor bait bag is inappropriate for a kitchen.

University guidance from Utah State University, UC IPM, and UC IPM’s fungus-gnat guidance describes these different breeding habits and control requirements.

1. Zevo Flying Insect Trap: best indoor overall

Best for: small-to-moderate indoor populations of house flies, fruit flies, and gnats when quiet operation, low odor, and discreet capture matter.

The standard Zevo Flying Insect Trap uses blue and UV light to draw flying insects onto a disposable adhesive cartridge. It has no chemical insecticide, liquid bait, odor, or high-voltage zapping grid. Captured insects remain on the adhesive surface behind the cartridge rather than being displayed on an exposed strip. The manufacturer describes the trap and cartridge system in its current FAQ.

How to use it

  • Plug it into a suitable North American 120 V/60 Hz outlet.
  • Place it where insects are active: near a trash container, fruit bowl, sink, houseplants, entryway, or other activity area.
  • Keep it visible to flying insects rather than behind furniture, curtains, a door, or in a corner.
  • Avoid placing it directly beside a bright window, television, or lamp that competes with the trap’s light.
  • For a large or divided room, more than one unit may be needed.

Zevo recommends replacing the adhesive cartridge when it is full or approximately every 30–45 days. Its newer blinking reminder activates after six weeks without the cartridge being checked. Those are maintenance guidelines, not guaranteed lifespans: a heavily infested room can fill a cartridge sooner.

Why it is a good indoor choice

It is quiet, visually discreet, and cleaner around kitchens and living spaces than a zapper. It also covers several common small indoor flying pests instead of relying on one food lure. Independent editorial testing by Bob Vila described the Zevo as discreet and easy to set up, while noting that results can appear slower when insect numbers are low.

Limitations

Zevo is not the strongest choice for a large population of full-size house flies, especially outdoors. Competing light can reduce its performance, and the device cannot remove larvae or breeding material in a drain, trash can, compost bin, or plant pot. “People- and pet-friendly” should be understood as used as directed and kept out of reach—not as permission for children or pets to handle, chew, or ingest the cartridge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. RESCUE! Fruit Fly Trap: best for fruit flies

Best for: tiny fruit flies around produce, wine, beer, kitchen scraps, sinks, garbage disposals, and compost.

This trap uses a food-based liquid lure and funnel-shaped openings. The lure is designed for indoor fruit flies rather than large house flies. RESCUE! says the trap begins catching fruit flies within minutes, includes a 30-day supply of attractant, and can be reused with refill attractant. “Within minutes” is a manufacturer statement; actual results depend on the species, population, placement, and competing odors.

Placement

Set it on a stable counter, table, or windowsill near the activity—but not where it can be knocked over into food or reached by children and pets. Good locations include near a fruit bowl, kitchen trash, compost container, sink, or garbage disposal. Do not hide it inside a cabinet if the flies are active in the open kitchen.

The important warning

RESCUE! specifically states that this product does not target fungus gnats or drain flies. If the insects are emerging from potting soil, use moisture control and sticky cards. If they cluster around a drain, clean the organic film inside the drain rather than continuing to add fruit-fly bait.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A trap can reduce adult fruit flies while new adults continue emerging. Remove overripe produce, rinse bottles and cans, empty food waste, clean sticky residue, and scrub drains and disposals. UC IPM’s fruit-fly guidance treats sanitation and removal of breeding material as essential, not optional.

3. Catchmaster Clear Window Traps: best no-power option

Best for: windows, patio doors, garages, apartments, workshops, and entry points where flies and gnats naturally gather.

Catchmaster’s clear window traps are pesticide-free adhesive sheets designed to stick to glass. They require no electricity, bait, or liquid. The manufacturer lists them for flies, gnats, fruit flies, and other nuisance insects and offers 12-, 48-, and 96-trap packages. When checked, the listed prices were $10.99, $29.99, and $39.99 respectively; prices and stock can change.

Zevo Flying Insect Trap for Fruit Flies & Gnats, 1 Plug-in Base & 1 Refills
  • Catch Flying Insects 24/7: This plug-in flying insect trap uses blue & UV light to attract and catch house flies, fruit flies, gnats, and flying pests. Its continuous attraction helps catch insects day and night for everyday indoor flying pest control.
  • No-Mess Adhesive Cartridge: Disposable glue cartridge works like bug sticky traps by holding trapped insects hidden on the wall-facing adhesive pad, while the no-mess tab makes cartridge removal simple when it is time to toss and replace.
  • Spray-Free, Zap-Free, Odor-Free Design: This quiet fly trap helps quickly and continuously control small flying insects indoors without spraying, zapping or added odors, making it a discreet everyday option in kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, enclosed patios, and other indoor spaces.
  • Family-Friendly Fly Trap: Safe for use around children and pets when used as directed.* Works best placed near the source - fruit bowls, trash bins and indoor plants, where flying insects and fungus gnats gather.
  • Year-Round Indoor Fly Control: Blinking blue light reminds you to check the cartridge every six weeks. Includes 1 device & 1 cartridge for everyday fly control in your kitchen and home. Stock up on refills or choose a Value Pack to keep a fly catcher in every room.

How to position them

  • Clean and dry the glass first.
  • Apply the trap near a window or patio-door edge or lower corner where flies rest.
  • Keep it away from curtains, children, pets, and food.
  • Use it as an entry-point control and monitor, not as a whole-room solution.

Catchmaster claims the adhesive can remain effective for up to 12 months under normal indoor conditions. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed interval. Dust, sunlight, humidity, surface condition, and the number of captured insects all affect service life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The main compromise is appearance: captured insects remain visible. This Old House selected the clear window trap as its best option for windows and reported that it can collect many flies, while also noting removal and appearance complaints.

Removal

Lift an edge slowly instead of pulling sharply. If adhesive remains, follow the product’s cleaning guidance and test any solvent on an inconspicuous area first. Do not assume every painted, stained, or finished surface will release the adhesive without residue; glass is the safest intended surface.

4. RESCUE! Disposable Fly Trap: best disposable outdoor trap

Best for: heavy outdoor activity from house flies, blow flies, blue and green bottle flies, and flesh flies around garbage, pet waste, poultry, livestock, or rural outbuildings.

This is a water-activated outdoor bait trap. To set it up, cut open the top along the marked lines, add water to the fill line, and hang the bag outdoors. The lure pouch dissolves in the water; flies enter through the top cap and drown in the liquid. The manufacturer says it contains no killing agents or poisons and advertises a capacity of up to 20,000 flies. The capacity is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified guarantee for every setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where to hang it

This trap smells strong because the odor is part of the attraction system. RESCUE! recommends placing strong-smelling outdoor fly traps at least 20 feet away from patios, decks, and other outdoor living areas. Put it near—but not directly beside—the source, such as a trash area, pet-waste station, chicken coop, or barn. Do not hang it next to the door, outdoor kitchen, picnic table, children’s play area, or the window you are trying to keep fly-free.

The trap is for outdoor use. Do not use it in a kitchen, garage, enclosed porch, attic, or other occupied interior space. Rain, leakage, or physical damage can compromise the bag, so follow the product’s hanging and placement instructions.

Why choose it

The opaque bag has high capacity, hides its contents, and can be discarded without emptying a container full of dead flies. In Bob Vila’s comparison, the disposable trap performed strongly outdoors, with odor and placement identified as its principal drawbacks.

5. TERRO Fly Magnet T380: best reusable outdoor bait trap

Best for: large outdoor house, barn, and bottle flies when you want a reusable container instead of a disposable bag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TERRO Fly Magnet T380 uses included water-activated bait. Add the bait, fill the trap with warm water, mix it, and place or hang the trap outdoors. Flies enter through the funnel and drown. TERRO says the container contains no chemical insecticides, can be emptied and rebaited, and works best in warm, bright, calm conditions. Replacement bait is sold as T382.

The official U.S. page listed the T380 at $9.99 when checked. That is a price snapshot, not a permanent price.

Rank #3
Zevo Flying Insect Trap for Fruit Flies & Gnats, 2 Plug-in Bases, 2 Refills
Includes 2 devices & 2 cartridges for everyday fly control in your kitchen and home. Stock up on refills or choose a Value Pack to keep a fly catcher in every room.

Placement and maintenance

  • Use the T380 outdoors only.
  • Keep it away from doors, windows, patios, seating, play areas, and outdoor food.
  • Place it near the fly source, such as garbage, manure, a barn, or a pet-waste area—but not next to the people you want to protect.
  • Use the warm-water and bait quantities specified by the current instructions.
  • Empty and rinse it carefully before rebaiting.

The odor is the principal trade-off. The bait is effective partly because it is attractive to flies, which makes the trap unpleasant beside a home. Emptying it is also messier than throwing away the RESCUE! bag. Bob Vila’s testing rated the T380 well for large flies and outdoor effectiveness while emphasizing those odor and cleanup drawbacks.

6. DynaTrap ½ Acre LED Outdoor Insect Trap, DT1130SR: best large-area electronic option

Best for: yards and outdoor areas where a reusable, low-odor, fan-assisted trap is preferable to a bait bag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DynaTrap DT1130SR uses UV-LED light and a fan to draw flying insects into a collection basket. DynaTrap markets it for mosquitoes, flies, moths, gnats, wasps, yellow jackets, beetles, no-see-ums, and other flying insects. The manufacturer states that it covers yards up to one-half acre, operates continuously, and has an easy-empty basket. The listed official price was $79.99 when checked.

The “one-half acre” figure is a manufacturer coverage claim, not a guarantee that every fly in that area will be captured. Wind, competing lights, nearby garbage, food odors, weather, placement, and insect pressure all affect performance.

Advantages

  • No foul bait odor.
  • Reusable collection system.
  • Fan-assisted capture rather than an exposed electric grid.
  • Suitable for readers who want continuous outdoor operation and relatively low-contact emptying.

In Bob Vila’s hands-on comparison, a DynaTrap half-acre model produced strong overnight catches, operated quietly, and had a convenient collection basket.

Limitations and safety

This is a broad flying-insect trap, not a food-baited house-fly specialist. If flies are concentrated around manure, pet waste, or garbage, a bait trap placed near—but away from—the source may work better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DT1130SR is designed for standard 120 V power and is not intended for direct use on 220–240 V systems. Use an appropriate outdoor-rated power arrangement and follow the current instructions for weather exposure; do not assume a powered device is suitable for an uncovered location merely because it is sold for outdoor use.

DynaTrap says beneficial pollinators such as honeybees and butterflies are not expected to be the intended targets, but it acknowledges that non-target insects may occasionally be captured. Keep the unit away from hive entrances and major bee flight paths.

How we chose these six

This is a category-based buying guide rather than a claim that one trap is universally superior. The selections were compared using current manufacturer instructions and specifications, university extension and IPM guidance, available independent product testing, target pest, indoor or outdoor suitability, odor, mess, placement, refill burden, safety, non-target capture, and likely total ownership cost.

Bob Vila reports a one-month evaluation of multiple trap designs, including adhesive, bait, UV, fan, and zapper products. That is useful practical evidence, but it is observational rather than a controlled laboratory comparison. Tom’s Guide conducted a single-home comparison of three fruit-fly products and found its inexpensive bait trap caught more fruit flies than the light-based products tested. That result should not be generalized to every home, bait formulation, or fly species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Product marketing claims—such as “up to 20,000 flies,” “up to one-half acre,” “eight times better,” or long cartridge life—are labeled as manufacturer claims rather than presented as independently proven performance.

Indoor versus outdoor: do not swap them casually

Indoor traps

For kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms, prioritize quiet operation, low odor, enclosed capture, easy disposal, and protection from children and pets. Light-and-adhesive traps such as Zevo are generally cleaner and less disruptive than bait bags. Window adhesive traps are useful when insects gather at a particular entry point.

Texas A&M recommends placing indoor light traps about 4 to 6 feet above the floor when possible, roughly corresponding to common house-fly flight height. Keep the device away from competing windows, bright lamps, screens, and other lights. Do not place it where the light is readily visible from outdoors, as that may draw insects toward the building.

Outdoor traps

Outdoor bait traps can be highly effective because their odors are attractive to flies. That is also why they should not be placed beside the patio, door, window, or table. Put the trap near the breeding or feeding source and away from people. For RESCUE! outdoor traps, the stated minimum is 20 feet from outdoor living areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outdoor electronic traps avoid bait odor but have broader insect targets and depend on safe power, placement, weather, and light conditions. Neither style creates a guaranteed fly-free boundary around a property.

How to make any fly trap work better

  1. Remove breeding material. Bag pet waste, clean manure and wet organic debris, empty garbage, remove rotting food, and manage compost.
  2. Use tight-lidded containers. Clean residue from the inside and underside of garbage bins rather than only changing the liner.
  3. Repair the building envelope. Replace damaged screens, add or repair door sweeps, close gaps around doors and windows, and seal cracks where practical. This is especially important in garages, workshops, barns, and other construction-related outbuildings.
  4. Clean drains and disposals. Scrub organic film from sink drains, floor drains, shower drains, and garbage disposals. Pouring a product down the drain without removing the film may provide only temporary improvement.
  5. Control plant moisture. Let the soil surface dry between waterings when appropriate for the plant, improve drainage, and remove decaying organic debris. Sticky cards catch adult fungus gnats, but they do not eliminate larvae in wet soil.
  6. Place the trap at the activity point. Keep indoor light traps visible and outdoor bait traps near the source but away from occupied areas.
  7. Reduce competing light. Reposition indoor light traps away from bright windows, televisions, and lamps.
  8. Maintain the trap. Replace full adhesive cartridges, refresh bait, empty collection baskets, and check power connections.
  9. Use more than one trap only when the source is controlled. Adding traps without removing waste, moisture, or entry points can simply increase the number of devices without solving the infestation.

UC IPM identifies sanitation and exclusion as the foundation of house-fly control. Texas A&M similarly says baited traps are most useful alongside breeding-site removal and can help monitor whether the population is declining.

Why your trap may not be working

It catches nothing

  • Wrong insect: A fruit-fly lure will not reliably catch fungus gnats or drain flies. Check the identification table and switch strategies.
  • Wrong location: Move the trap closer to the activity, while keeping smelly outdoor traps away from people.
  • Competing light: Reposition an indoor light trap away from windows, screens, and bright lamps.
  • Inactive trap: Check the outlet, cartridge, bait, collection basket, and installation.
  • Low population: A trap may take longer to show captures when only a few insects are present.

It catches flies, but the infestation continues

New adults are probably emerging from a breeding source. Inspect garbage and recycling containers, drains, disposals, compost, pet areas, poultry or livestock areas, damp plant soil, crawl spaces, attics, wall voids, and any dead animal or decaying organic material. Colorado State University Extension recommends locating and eliminating the developmental site rather than relying on adult control alone.

The bait trap attracts more flies near the house

That can happen if it is too close to a door, patio, window, or outdoor kitchen. Move it toward the source and farther from occupied areas. The trap should intercept flies near their source, not advertise the bait beside the area you are trying to protect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The flies bite

Biting stable flies are not the same control problem as nonbiting house flies. If the insects bite people or animals, identify the species and address moist manure, wet grass, livestock conditions, and other breeding sites; a general indoor fly trap may not be adequate.

Safety, food areas, and non-target insects

  • No insecticide does not mean no risk. Adhesive, bait, electrical parts, and trapped insects should still be kept away from children and pets. Prevent chewing, spilling, and ingestion.
  • Keep liquid bait stable. Place liquid traps where they cannot be knocked over into food, food-preparation surfaces, or animal bowls.
  • Be cautious near food. Even a pesticide-free trap can collect dead insects or contain liquid that should not contact food. Follow the exact product instructions and keep the device out of the food-preparation path.
  • Use zappers selectively. Texas A&M and UC IPM caution that high-voltage zappers can scatter insect fragments. They are better reserved for suitable dry, non-food areas such as some garages or workshops, not used as a default kitchen solution.
  • Consider beneficial insects. Broad-spectrum UV outdoor traps can capture moths, beetles, wasps, and other non-target insects. DynaTrap acknowledges occasional non-target capture and recommends keeping its unit away from hives and major bee flight paths.
  • Verify the exact model. Similar product names can hide different voltage, coverage, bulb, weather, and placement specifications. Follow the current manual for the exact model number.

What about other fly-control options?

The six recommendations cover the most common shopping scenarios, but other products may fit narrower problems:

  • Fungus gnats: Yellow sticky cards are often more targeted than a general fly trap. They should be paired with appropriate moisture control; UC IPM discusses drying practices and larval controls such as Bti when needed.
  • Lower-cost indoor plug-in: The Safer Home SH502 is another indoor adhesive-style option. Verify current cartridge availability and instructions.
  • Katchy: The manufacturer’s product information distinguishes its target insects and warns that its devices are not effective on house flies. Do not buy it for a large-house-fly problem based only on the word “fly” in the product category.
  • Indoor zapper: An Aspectek HR292-5 may suit an appropriate dry, non-food space. Verify the exact model: the current official listing specifies two 10 W UV bulbs, a 2,800 V grid, up to 583 square feet, a removable washable tray, and two replacement bulbs in the listed bundle.
  • Temporary fruit-fly monitor: A homemade vinegar trap can help confirm a fruit-fly problem, but it does not replace sanitation or a purpose-designed trap for a persistent infestation.
  • Persistent or commercial problems: If flies continue after breeding material and entry points have been addressed—or if the infestation involves a food business, livestock operation, wall void, dead animal, or inaccessible structural space—consult a licensed pest professional.

Bottom line

Choose the Zevo for quiet, discreet indoor control; the RESCUE! Fruit Fly Trap for tiny kitchen fruit flies; Catchmaster for no-power window and door monitoring; the RESCUE! Disposable for maximum outdoor bait capacity without emptying; the TERRO T380 for reusable outdoor bait; and the DynaTrap DT1130SR for a low-odor, reusable electronic yard trap.

Whichever you buy, treat the trap as the adult-control portion of the job. Remove the breeding source, improve screens and door seals, control moisture, and place the trap according to the insect’s behavior. That combination is more reliable than buying a stronger trap and leaving the cause untouched.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best fly trap for indoors?

The Zevo Flying Insect Trap is the best general indoor choice for small-to-moderate populations of house flies, fruit flies, and gnats. Its light attracts insects to a hidden adhesive cartridge without odor or a zapping grid. It will not eliminate breeding material in drains, trash, compost, or plant soil.

What is the best trap for large house flies?

For large outdoor house-fly, blow-fly, barn-fly, or bottle-fly populations, choose the RESCUE! Disposable Fly Trap or TERRO Fly Magnet T380. The RESCUE! is easier to discard, while the TERRO is reusable but more unpleasant to empty. For indoor stragglers, use an adhesive or light trap and address the source.

What is the best trap for fruit flies?

The RESCUE! Fruit Fly Trap is the most specifically matched recommendation in this guide. It uses a food-based liquid lure and funnel openings. Remove overripe produce, clean drains and garbage disposals, empty food waste, and rinse containers at the same time.

Will a fly trap eliminate an infestation?

Usually not by itself. Traps remove adult flies, but eggs and larvae may remain in manure, garbage, drains, compost, pet waste, damp potting soil, or decaying organic material. Sanitation, moisture control, exclusion, and source removal are necessary for lasting control.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Where should an outdoor fly trap be placed?

Place it near the fly source—such as garbage, pet waste, a chicken coop, barn, or compost—but away from doors, windows, patios, play areas, and outdoor food. RESCUE! recommends at least 20 feet from patios and decks for strong-smelling outdoor traps.

Are fly traps safe around pets?

Use them as directed and keep them where pets cannot chew, knock over, or ingest the trap, bait, adhesive, cartridge, or trapped insects. “No insecticide” or “non-toxic bait” does not mean unrestricted access is safe.

Are UV fly traps safe near food?

A light-and-adhesive trap is generally cleaner near food than a high-voltage zapper because it does not explode insects across nearby surfaces. Still, keep any device and captured insects away from food and food-preparation surfaces, and follow the exact product instructions.

Why are flies not entering my trap?

Check the insect identification, move the trap closer to activity, reduce competing light, confirm the bait or adhesive is fresh, and inspect for a breeding source. A fruit-fly trap will not reliably catch fungus gnats or drain flies, and a trap cannot compensate for an active garbage, drain, manure, or plant-soil infestation.

Should I use a zapper indoors?

Reserve high-voltage zappers for suitable dry, non-food areas such as some garages or workshops. Extension guidance warns that zappers can scatter insect fragments, making them a poor default choice for kitchens, dining areas, or food-preparation spaces.

What trap works for fungus gnats?

Yellow sticky cards are generally more targeted for adult fungus gnats than a large outdoor bait trap. Reduce excess soil moisture and improve drainage; adult traps alone will not remove larvae developing in damp potting media.

What trap works for drain flies?

Use a sticky trap as a monitor, but clean the drain mechanically. Drain flies develop in the organic film inside drains, so removing that film is more important than repeatedly trapping adults. Chemical treatment without source cleaning is often temporary.
