The Pro Way to Eliminate Bathroom Gnats and Stop Them From Coming Back

Bathroom gnats are usually a symptom of drain biofilm, trapped moisture, dry traps, or a small plumbing defect. Here is the contractor-grade process for finding the source, cleaning it correctly, and stopping the cycle.

If you have tiny flies hovering around the bathroom sink, shower, tub, or toilet, the fastest professional answer is this: identify the insect, prove which wet area is producing it, remove the organic sludge where larvae feed, then correct the moisture or plumbing condition that let the problem start. Spraying the room may knock down adults for a day, but it rarely solves bathroom gnats permanently.

In most bathrooms, the culprit is not a true gnat. It is a drain fly, also called a moth fly. Drain flies are small, fuzzy, weak fliers that hang around drains and rest on walls near sinks, tubs, showers, floor drains, and toilets. They breed in the gelatinous biofilm inside plumbing, overflows, and stagnant wet areas. Fruit flies and fungus gnats can also show up in bathrooms, but they point to different sources.

On our job sites, recurring bathroom gnats usually turn out to be a building-maintenance problem before it is a pest-control problem: hair and soap sludge in a trap, a dirty overflow, a dry floor-drain trap, a slow vanity leak, a loose toilet, failed caulk, or a shower assembly that is holding water where it should not. The durable fix is source control.

First, Identify What You Are Dealing With

Before you pour anything down the drain, spend 10 minutes identifying the pest. The treatment changes depending on the source.

Drain flies

Drain flies are about 1/8 inch long, with fuzzy, moth-like wings. They do not fly strongly. You usually see them resting on tile, mirrors, the vanity backsplash, shower walls, or near a floor drain. They are most active when the room has been quiet, often early morning or late evening. Their larvae feed in drain slime, not in open air.

Fruit flies

Fruit flies are smoother-bodied and faster than drain flies. In a bathroom, they often come from a trash can, a forgotten drink, a wet rag, spilled product, or fermenting residue in a vanity drawer. If they also show up in the kitchen, start there before blaming the bathroom plumbing.

Fungus gnats

Fungus gnats are dark, delicate flies that usually come from damp potting soil. If you keep plants in the bathroom, especially in a humid window or on a tub ledge, check the soil. Let the top 1 to 2 inches dry between watering, remove decaying leaves, and consider repotting if the soil stays wet.

If the insects are fuzzy and staying near drains, proceed as if you have drain flies. That is the most common bathroom scenario and the one most likely to keep coming back unless the wet assembly is cleaned correctly.

Pro Diagnosis: Find the Active Source Before Treating

A bathroom can have several wet points: sink drain, sink overflow, tub drain, tub overflow, shower drain, floor drain, toilet base, bidet connection, vanity supply stops, and sometimes a mechanical-room drain nearby. Treating every drain blindly wastes time and can hide the real defect.

Use the tape test. Dry the rim of each drain opening. Place a piece of clear tape sticky-side-down over part of the drain opening, leaving some open space for airflow. Do this overnight after the last water use. Do not fully seal the drain. In the morning, check the tape. If small flies are stuck to it, that drain is active.

Run the test on every suspect drain for 1 to 3 nights. Include the sink, shower, tub, floor drain, and any rarely used bathroom fixture. If you see flies in the room but none on the tape, check the toilet base, wet trash, plants, damp towels, and the vanity cabinet bottom. A slow leak under a sink can create the same damp organic conditions outside the pipe.

We also check the overflow port with a flashlight. Sink and tub overflows are commonly missed because they are not visible from above. Soap film, toothpaste, skin oils, and hair can collect in that channel. If you clean the main drain but leave the overflow dirty, the flies can rebound within a week.

The 7-Day Bathroom Gnat Removal Plan

This schedule works for a typical bathroom sink, tub, or shower drain where the tape test points to drain flies. Plan on 30 to 60 minutes for the first cleaning, then 5 to 10 minutes per night for follow-up treatment. For DIY materials, expect about $15 to $60 for enzyme or bacterial drain gel, a drain brush, disposable gloves, tape, and basic cleaning supplies.

Day 1: Remove hair, sludge, and removable parts

Put on gloves and remove what the drain will let you remove safely: sink stopper, hair strainer, pop-up assembly, shower strainer, or tub stopper. Photograph the assembly first if you are not used to taking it apart. Pull out hair and visible sludge with a drain tool or disposable rag. Clean the underside of the stopper and strainer. This is often where the thickest buildup sits.

Do not start with bleach. Bleach can sanitize surfaces it touches, but drain-fly larvae live in sticky biofilm. Liquid can run through the pipe and leave the food layer attached to the wall. Mechanical cleaning is the difference between a real fix and a short pause.

Day 1: Scrub the drain wall and overflow

Use a flexible drain brush or pipe brush sized for the opening. Scrub the drain wall above the trap, the crossbars, the stopper seat, and the first several inches of pipe. For a sink overflow, use a small bottle brush or flexible brush from the overflow opening down toward the drain. Flush with warm water after scrubbing.

Avoid boiling water, especially with PVC piping, older fittings, porcelain, wax rings, or stressed connections. Hot tap water is usually enough for flushing after mechanical cleaning. Also avoid mixing chemicals. Never combine bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acids, or drain cleaners.

Nights 1 through 5: Apply enzyme or bacterial drain gel

After the last water use of the night, apply an enzyme or bacterial drain gel according to the label. The goal is contact time. Gel products cling to the pipe wall better than thin liquids, giving the treatment several hours to work on organic buildup. Do not run water afterward unless the product directions require it.

Treat the overflow if the label allows it and the product is appropriate for that use. Many callbacks happen because the main drain was treated, but the overflow channel was never touched.

Days 2 through 7: Keep the bathroom dry and monitor

Dry the sink deck, shower curb, tub ledge, and floor after use. Remove wet towels and clean the trash can. Check the tape test again on day 4 or day 5. You should see fewer adults each day because the larval habitat is being removed. Adult flies may continue appearing for several days, but the population should drop sharply within a week.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Day 7: Reinspect the whole wet assembly

If you still see flies after 7 days, repeat the tape test on all drains and inspect for moisture outside the drain. Look under the vanity with a flashlight. Feel the cabinet bottom for swelling. Check the toilet base for movement or staining. Look for soft baseboards, failed caulk, loose grout, damp drywall, or a shower floor that stays wet long after use.

What Not to Do

Several popular remedies are incomplete or risky. They may reduce adults, but they do not remove the larval food source.

Do not rely on aerosol spray as the main treatment. Adult-killing spray does not clean drain biofilm, so eggs and larvae continue the cycle. Do not pour bleach once and assume the pipe is clean. Do not mix drain chemicals with household cleaners. Do not plug or seal a drain in a way that blocks drainage or interferes with trap function. Do not ignore a sewer odor, bubbling drain, or recurring clog. Those are plumbing symptoms, not normal pest problems.

Boiling water is another common recommendation we avoid in many homes. It can soften PVC, stress older joints, crack porcelain in the wrong conditions, and affect wax rings near toilets. Warm water, scrubbing, and the correct drain gel are safer and usually more effective.

Cost to Get Rid of Bathroom Gnats in 2026

The cost depends on whether you have a simple dirty drain, several affected drains, or a plumbing defect behind the infestation. Most homeowners should start with low-cost diagnosis and cleaning unless there are signs of a leak, sewer gas, or drainage failure.

Scope Typical 2026 Cost Best For
DIY drain-fly cleanup $15 to $60 One or two accessible drains, no leaks, no sewer odor, no recurring clogs
Gnat pest control visit $150 to $300 Heavy adult activity, uncertain insect type, or multiple rooms affected
Drain-fly professional cleaning Around $250 Persistent drain flies where the source is known but hard to clean fully
Standard drain cleaning $147 to $549 Slow sink, tub, or shower drain with buildup in the trap or branch line
Simple clogged drain repair $150 to $350 Basic fixture clog without major access problems
Hydro-jetting or severe drain work Often starts around $700 Main-line buildup, heavy sludge, difficult access, or repeated backups

Cost drivers include the number of drains, age of the infestation, whether a floor drain is involved, access behind tile or a vanity, regional labor rates, after-hours service, camera inspection, hydro-jetting, and whether the fix moves from cleaning into plumbing or remodeling. Replacing failed caulk may be minor. Repairing a leaking shower pan, loose toilet flange, failed wax ring, or improperly sloped drain can become a larger construction project.

Dry Traps, Floor Drains, and Code-Aware Fixes

A properly functioning P-trap holds water to block sewer gas and pests from entering the living space. If a guest bath, basement shower, laundry floor drain, or mechanical-room drain sits unused, the water in the trap can evaporate. Once the trap seal is gone, odors and insects have a path into the room.

For rarely used fixtures, flush the drain weekly. Run water in the sink, tub, shower, and floor drain long enough to refill the trap. In dry spaces or floor drains prone to evaporation, ask a licensed plumber about code-approved trap-seal protection. Do not improvise by permanently blocking the drain. A floor drain still needs to accept water when it is needed.

The International Plumbing Code includes trap and trap-seal requirements because trap function is part of sanitary drainage, not decoration. Work involving traps, venting, drain relocation, floor drains, or shower pans should be handled by a licensed plumber. In many jurisdictions, that work may also require a permit, especially during a remodel or when concealed plumbing is changed.

Why Bathroom Gnats Come Back After Cleaning

If flies return after 7 to 14 days of correct drain cleaning, assume there is another source or a building condition feeding the problem. The most common misses are the overflow channel, the underside of the stopper, a nearby floor drain, or damp material outside the pipe.

Check the vanity cabinet. A slow drip at a P-trap nut or supply stop can soak wood or stored paper products. Check the toilet. A loose toilet can compromise the wax ring and allow moisture and odor at the base. Look at the shower. Failed caulk, cracked grout, a flat curb, or a shower pan leak can hold water below the finished surface. Soft baseboards, staining, musty odor, or flooring movement are not normal.

Also consider what changed recently. If gnats appeared after a bathroom remodel, the cause may be construction debris in the trap, an unused new fixture, a floor drain with no maintained trap seal, an unsealed pipe penetration, incorrect drain slope, or a waterproofing issue at the shower pan or curb. In construction work, a small slope or sealing mistake can create a wet pocket that becomes a pest source before it becomes an obvious leak.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when the flies are clearly coming from one accessible sink, tub, or shower drain; the drain works normally; there is no sewer odor; and you can remove the stopper or strainer for cleaning. Spend the $15 to $60, clean mechanically, apply drain gel for several nights, and monitor for a week.

Call pest control when you cannot identify the insect, activity is spread across several rooms, or you need help reducing a heavy adult population while the source is being corrected. Pest control can be useful, but for drain flies it should support source removal, not replace it.

Call a licensed plumber when you have sewer odor, recurring clogs, gurgling or bubbling drains, a floor drain that dries out repeatedly, a loose toilet, water under the vanity, slow drainage in multiple fixtures, or flies returning after 7 to 14 days of source cleaning. Call a remodeler or qualified bathroom contractor when the clues point to failed caulk, wet subfloor, shower pan seepage, soft trim, tile movement, or a problem that requires opening walls or floors.

Safety Notes Homeowners Should Follow

Wear gloves and eye protection when cleaning drains. Ventilate the room. Read product labels and use drain treatments only as directed. Never mix chemicals. Protect stone, metal finishes, painted cabinetry, and acrylic tubs from harsh products. If you remove a stopper or trap component, keep parts in order and avoid overtightening plastic slip nuts when reassembling.

If you smell sewer gas, stop treating it like a cosmetic pest issue. Sewer odor can indicate a dry trap, failed seal, venting issue, or drainage defect. If you see water damage, mold-like growth, soft flooring, or a loose toilet, do not keep adding chemicals to the drain. Find the moisture source.

A Pro-Level Prevention Routine

Once the infestation is gone, prevention is straightforward. Clean sink and shower strainers weekly. Remove hair before it reaches the trap. Flush guest-bath fixtures weekly. Keep floor drains charged with water or code-approved trap-seal protection. Dry shower curbs and corners after use. Repair failed caulk and grout before water reaches the substrate. Keep the vanity cabinet empty enough that you can spot leaks early.

For bathrooms with heavy use, schedule a deeper drain cleaning every 30 to 60 days. That does not mean harsh chemicals. It means removing the stopper, clearing hair, brushing accessible buildup, flushing with warm water, and using an enzyme or bacterial maintenance product if the drain tends to collect biofilm.

Bathroom gnats are not solved by making the room smell clean. They are solved by removing the wet organic layer they breed in and correcting the reason that layer keeps forming. That is the professional approach: identify the source, clean the assembly completely, protect the trap seal, and investigate hidden moisture when the flies do not stay gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are bathroom gnats the same as drain flies?

Usually, yes. Most small gnats found around bathroom sinks, tubs, and showers are drain flies. They are fuzzy, moth-like, weak fliers that breed in drain biofilm. Fruit flies and fungus gnats can also appear, but they usually point to fermenting material or wet plant soil.

How do I tell if gnats are coming from my bathroom drain?

Place clear tape sticky-side-down over part of the drain opening overnight without fully blocking airflow. If flies are stuck to the tape in the morning, that drain is an active source. Test every sink, tub, shower, and floor drain.

Will bleach kill drain flies permanently?

Bleach may kill some organisms it touches, but it often flows past the sticky biofilm where larvae feed. Permanent control requires mechanical cleaning of the drain, stopper, strainer, and overflow, followed by a clinging enzyme or bacterial drain gel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the fastest way to get rid of gnats in a bathroom?

Confirm the source with a tape test, remove hair and sludge, scrub the drain and overflow, then apply enzyme drain gel at night for several days. Most light infestations improve within 3 to 7 days if the source is cleaned thoroughly.

When should I call a plumber instead of pest control?

Call a plumber if you notice sewer odor, bubbling drains, recurring clogs, a dry floor drain, a loose toilet, water under the vanity, or flies returning after 7 to 14 days of correct cleaning. Those signs point to plumbing or moisture problems.

Do bathroom gnats mean I have a leak or mold problem?

Not always, but recurring gnats can be a warning sign. If the drains are clean and flies persist, check for hidden moisture at the vanity, toilet base, shower pan, baseboards, caulk joints, grout, and nearby floor drains.
