The short answer: Real Simple’s most recently confirmed overall bath-towel pick is the Italic Serene Ultraplush Australian Cotton Bath Towel, which the magazine featured in June 2024. However, that is not enough evidence to call it Real Simple’s current 2026 winner. Publicly indexed references to Real Simple’s 2026 guide show inconsistent product counts—10 and 12—and do not reliably expose the complete, current lineup.
That distinction matters. Towel prices, dimensions, materials, colors, availability, and even product specifications can change. The Italic towel earned strong marks for absorbency, softness, and drying speed in the older coverage, but readers should verify the live Real Simple article before treating it as the current best overall pick. For shoppers choosing today, the right towel still depends on the balance of plushness, absorbency, drying speed, size, durability, and price.

Important 2026 buying note: The exact current Real Simple winner, lineup, and prices should be confirmed on the live Real Simple shopping guide before publication or purchase. The evidence available for this article confirms an older winner and several independent 2026 recommendations, but it does not prove that the older Real Simple picks remain current.

The best-supported choices at a glance
These are the most defensible recommendations from the available Real Simple and 2026 independent testing. “Best” means best for a particular use, not a universal ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- Light Weight and not too thick: The reduced thickness makes it more convenient to carry, allows for quick drying & is energy efficient
- This package contains 2 extra large bath towels 30 x 60 in, 2 hand towels 16 x 28 in and 4 washcloths 13 x 13 in
- Designed in Super Fine Cotton to provide a softer texture and feel
- Wash before first use. Wash them on their own, use mild detergent and avoid bleach & fabric softeners. Refrain from ironing
- Use tumble dry on low heat. Over-drying towels can increase linting and reduce lifespan of towels. Shedding is natural on initial wash/dry cycles
| Category | Best-supported choice | Why consider it | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most recently confirmed Real Simple overall pick | Italic Serene Ultraplush Australian Cotton Bath Towel | Older Real Simple coverage reported strong absorbency, retained softness, and a 90-minute drying time. | That recommendation dates to June 2024 and must not automatically be treated as the 2026 winner. |
| Current independent overall contender | Frontgate Resort Collection Bath Towel | Forbes Vetted named it best overall in its June 2026 guide, and Wirecutter has maintained it as a long-running recommendation. | Real Simple’s older testing found it plush but less impressive in absorbency, showing that test methods and preferences matter. |
| Quick-drying | Onsen Supima Waffle | Forbes Vetted selected it as its best waffle towel; the open construction is better suited to humid bathrooms and limited drying space. | Waffle texture is usually less enveloping than dense terry. |
| Value | Everplush Diamond Jacquard or Amazon Basics Quick-Dry | Forbes Vetted named Everplush its best value, while Good Housekeeping included Amazon Basics Quick-Dry among its leading value-oriented picks. | Check the current price per bath towel and set contents rather than comparing package prices alone. |
| Luxury | Matouk Milagro | Forbes Vetted named it best luxury; older Real Simple testing also identified it as the largest towel evaluated. | Premium pricing, greater laundry weight, and shrinkage can reduce its practical advantage. |
| Large coverage | Quince Turkish Ultra Luxe Plush Bath Sheet | Forbes Vetted selected it as its best bath sheet. | A bath sheet takes longer to dry and uses more washer and storage capacity. |
| Organic or sustainability-focused shopping | Verify the current Real Simple organic pick; Brooklinen Organic Ribbed is an older Real Simple lead | Organic certification addresses farming and processing standards, which may matter independently of softness. | Organic labeling alone does not guarantee absorbency, durability, or quick drying. |
What Real Simple’s testing tells us
Real Simple has an established bath-towel testing program rather than selecting products solely from brand claims. The strongest publicly available description of its process says the team evaluated 99 towels in the lab, chose 22 top performers for six weeks of at-home testing, and kept a control towel to compare with a used and laundered sample. The testers considered softness, texture, thickness, absorbency, durability, coverage, air-drying time, snagging, fraying, shedding, discoloration, fading, and shrinkage. The published methodology is available in a publicly mirrored version of Real Simple’s testing material.
The lab absorbency test used a shallow bowl of water, while durability testing included abrasion with a scrub brush. At-home towels were laundered in hot water and dried on high heat—even when those settings differed from the manufacturer’s care instructions. That creates a useful stress test for households that wash and dry towels aggressively, but it can also penalize towels designed for cold washing or low-heat drying. Results should therefore be read as performance under that protocol, not as a guarantee of what every towel will do under its recommended care.
The most recently confirmed Real Simple overall selection appeared in the magazine’s June 2024 coverage: the Italic Serene Ultraplush Australian Cotton Bath Towel. Real Simple reported that it absorbed four ounces of water in 10 seconds, dried in 90 minutes, and retained its softness. The listed price was $52 for two at that time. That price, the product’s current specifications, and its place in the 2026 guide need to be rechecked; they are historical figures, not current pricing.
Real Simple’s older picks: useful leads, not confirmed 2026 winners
Several products appeared in publicly available Real Simple testing material or search references to earlier versions of the guide. They remain useful comparison points, but none should be presented as a current 2026 Real Simple winner without checking the live article and current product page.
| Towel | Earlier Real Simple role or finding | Trade-off to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Lands’ End Premium Supima Cotton Bath Towel | Praised for softness, absorption, color retention, stain removal, and resistance to abrasion. | Testers noted shrinkage, and the towel did not have a certification in the cited coverage. |
| Threshold Quick Dry Ribbed Bath Towel Set | Surfaced as an earlier budget or quick-drying pick; a search reference listed $14 at the time. | That price and the current construction must be verified at Target before comparison. |
| Brooklinen Organic Ribbed Bath Towel | Strong absorbency and stain resistance in the cited testing. | It experienced substantial shrinkage and later fraying under the reported test conditions. |
| Mara Organic Waffle Weave Towel from The Citizenry | Soft, cushioned waffle texture, fast drying, low shrinkage, and less bulk in the linen closet. | It is less traditionally plush than dense terry. |
| Better Homes & Gardens Signature Soft Bath Towel | Soft cotton-blend construction, decorative dobby detail, durability, and OEKO-TEX Made in Green certification were highlighted. | Current availability and specifications need to be checked. |
| Southern Living Turkish Cotton & Modal Bath Towel | The cited material describes an 80% Turkish cotton and 20% modal blend with soft, durable zero-twist fibers. | Blends can feel excellent, but the current product and retailer availability are volatile. |
| Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection by RHH | Earlier Real Simple material described lasting softness, durability, and quick drying. | “Bamboo” textiles are generally rayon or viscose regenerated from bamboo pulp, not towels woven from raw bamboo fiber. |
| RH Ultra-Soft Turkish Towel | Oversized long-staple Turkish cotton, OEKO-TEX Made in Green certification, and monogramming were highlighted. | Confirm the current model, certification, dimensions, and price. |
| Matouk Milagro Bath Towel | It was the largest towel in the older Real Simple testing, measuring 30 by 60 inches before washing and 28 by 57 inches afterward. | That example shows why post-wash dimensions matter when buying for coverage. |
How the 2026 independent testing compares
Real Simple’s current lineup should be the authority for an article specifically about Real Simple editors, but independent testing helps identify whether a recommendation is broadly useful or highly protocol-dependent.
Good Housekeeping’s 2026 guide says it has evaluated more than 90 towel styles over six years with laboratory testing and consumer testers. Its process includes a standardized absorbency apparatus and 20 wash cycles for durability. Its categories include overall, value, plush, quick-drying, absorbent, softest, and luxury. The guide highlights Pottery Barn Hydrocotton Quick-Dry, Amazon Basics Quick-Dry, Frontgate Resort Collection, and Everplush Diamond Jacquard among its leading choices.
Forbes Vetted’s June 2026 guide tested 15 towels with a 12-person panel for absorbency, drying efficiency, plushness, and durability. Its category winners were Frontgate Resort Collection for best overall, Brooklinen Plush Turkish Cotton for best midweight, Matouk Milagro for best luxury, Everplush Diamond Jacquard for best value, Brooklinen Super-Plush for best heavyweight, Quince Turkish Ultra Luxe Plush Bath Sheet for best bath sheet, Onsen Supima Waffle for best waffle, and Cozy Earth Ribbed Terry for best ribbed.

Why reviewers disagree about Frontgate
Frontgate is a useful example of why one publication’s winner is not a universal truth. Real Simple’s older testing found it plush but disappointing in absorbency, reporting that water sat on top and produced a “wet blanket” sensation. Forbes Vetted and Wirecutter have rated the same named collection highly for plushness, absorbency, and durability.

- Multipurpose/Versatile/ Dynamic Use- Perfect combination of softness and strength, the towel set is ideal for everyday usage. Use the towels efficiently in a bathroom, at gym, beach, poolside, salon, spa or even camping trip.
- Double Stitched Hemmed Finish- Each towel is finished with a double stitched hems at the border to give them a clean edge while preventing it from unraveling. It also adds to the aesthetics of the towel set.
- Highly Absorbent- Our towels are super absorbent, yet light weighted. Gives the body a soft and delicate touch while helping you dry off your skin gently. To prevent unforeseen color discoloration, it is advised, to avoid the removal of the application of any form of cosmetics, facial creams, or scrubs directly with the towel.
The disagreement may reflect different washing protocols, test conditions, towel versions, tester preferences, or the difference between maximum absorbency and the tactile experience of a wet towel. A shopper who wants a heavy hotel-style towel may prefer Frontgate; someone who dislikes a saturated, weighty towel may be happier with a lighter ribbed or waffle construction.
Choose by bathroom and laundry conditions
For a humid bathroom or weak ventilation
Choose a lower- or medium-weight towel with an open waffle, lattice, or ribbed construction. A dense 700–800 GSM towel can feel luxurious but may stay damp longer in a humid room, particularly when hung over a narrow hook. Hang the towel fully open, use ventilation or a fan, and wash it more often if it cannot dry completely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWaffle and lattice towels have more open space for air circulation and generally create less linen-closet bulk. They are not automatically more absorbent than plush terry, but their faster drying can be more important than maximum water uptake in a damp bathroom.
For a home without a dryer
Prioritize published air-drying results, lower GSM, open weaves, and towels small enough to spread fully on a rack. The Onsen Supima Waffle is the strongest current independent lead for this use. Mara Organic Waffle was also an earlier Real Simple quick-drying lead, but its current availability and status must be confirmed.
Do not treat a claim such as “dries in 30 minutes” as meaningful without knowing whether it refers to a dryer, a warm room, a rack, or a controlled test. Airflow, humidity, temperature, towel size, and whether the towel is folded can change the result dramatically.
For a large family
Look beyond softness. The practical priorities are fast drying, durable hems, low lint, low shrinkage, consistent colors, a reasonable per-towel price, and a set that can be replenished. A very large set is not necessarily a bargain if it includes hand towels and washcloths that your household will not use.
Do not overload the washer with dense bath sheets. Towels need room to move through the wash and enough dryer capacity to dry fully. If several people use the bathroom throughout the day, buying lighter towels may reduce dampness and odor more effectively than buying the heaviest available fabric.
For sensitive skin
Look for a smooth, soft construction and follow the care label. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 can be a useful finished-product safety credential for shoppers who want textile testing for harmful substances. Wash new towels before use with fragrance-free detergent if fragrance is a concern, and avoid rough, highly textured waffle surfaces if they irritate the skin.
Certification is not the same as medical hypoallergenic status. No towel should be described as universally safe for sensitive skin without evidence specific to the individual’s condition.

For children or shorter users
A standard bath towel is usually easier for a child to handle than a bath sheet. Lightweight fabric, fast drying, washable colors, and a manageable size matter more than maximum coverage. Color-coding towels can also reduce mix-ups in a busy household.
For long or thick hair
A smaller, lighter towel is often more practical for hair wrapping than a dense bath sheet. A large body towel can absorb more water, but it also becomes heavier when wet and may place unnecessary weight on hair or the neck. Treat body-drying and hair-wrapping as different jobs.
GSM: useful information, not a quality score
GSM means grams per square meter. It describes fabric weight and helps predict how a towel may feel and behave:
- Below 400 GSM: generally lightweight, easier to wash and dry, and useful for travel, gyms, warm climates, or households without a dryer.
- 400–600 GSM: generally medium weight and a practical compromise between softness, absorbency, and drying time.
- Above 600 GSM: generally heavier and plusher, but slower to dry and more demanding on washers, dryers, shelves, and towel bars.
Those ranges come from older Real Simple guidance and are broad categories, not industry guarantees. Fiber length, loop height, density, finishing, weave, towel size, and construction also affect performance. A 500 GSM waffle towel may dry much faster than a 500 GSM dense terry towel, while a very heavy towel may absorb more water but feel cumbersome once saturated.
The 800 GSM figure reported for the older Italic Serene Ultraplush towel helps explain its plush feel, but it does not prove that it is better for every bathroom or household.

Terry, waffle, lattice, and ribbed towels
| Construction | Typical strengths | Typical limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Terry | Raised loops, traditional plushness, strong absorbency, and an enveloping feel. | Often heavier, bulkier, and slower to dry; wet towels can feel weighty. |
| Waffle | Three-dimensional texture, lower bulk, and generally quicker drying. | Usually less cloud-like than plush terry and can feel textured against the skin. |
| Lattice | Open construction that promotes airflow and reduces drying time; often a good no-dryer option. | May sacrifice some thickness and conventional spa-towel softness. |
| Ribbed | Texture can add surface area and may dry faster than dense, smooth terry. | Performance varies widely with pile height and density; the word “ribbed” alone says little about absorbency. |
Which cotton type should you choose?
Fiber names are clues, not guarantees. Real Simple’s experts emphasize high-quality, extra-long-staple cotton because longer fibers can support strength, softness, and absorbency. But construction and finishing can outweigh the name on the label.
- Turkish cotton: often associated with long fibers, softness, lighter weight, and relatively quick drying.
- Egyptian cotton: commonly marketed as especially plush and absorbent. Treat geographic claims cautiously unless the current product information and provenance are independently supported.
- Supima cotton: U.S.-grown extra-long-staple cotton commonly associated with softness and durability.
- Organic cotton: describes agricultural and processing standards, not a guaranteed softness, absorbency, or service life.
- Modal and rayon: regenerated cellulose fibers that can add a silky, soft hand to a blend.
- Bamboo-derived fiber: generally rayon or viscose made from bamboo pulp. It should not be described as raw bamboo fiber woven into a towel.
A cotton blend can perform well. The Southern Living towel in the older Real Simple material, for example, was described as 80% Turkish cotton and 20% modal. The blend may feel softer than a comparable all-cotton towel, but current specifications and availability should be checked rather than assumed from the older listing.
Certifications: what they do and do not prove
Certifications answer different questions. They should not be converted into a general performance ranking.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: tests the finished textile for harmful substances within the standard’s defined scope. It does not mean the product is chemical-free in every sense, automatically organic, or environmentally superior.
- OEKO-TEX Made in Green: combines product-safety testing with supply-chain traceability and production-facility requirements.
- GOTS: covers organic textile requirements across the supply chain, including processing and labeling.
- Fair Trade: addresses labor and trading conditions. It does not by itself guarantee softness, absorbency, fast drying, or durability.
Certification may be decisive for a sustainability- or sourcing-focused shopper, but performance still needs to be evaluated separately.

Bath towel or bath sheet?
A standard bath towel is commonly around 27–30 by 52–56 inches. A bath sheet is substantially larger, often around 35–40 by 60–70 inches. Exact dimensions vary by brand, and washing can reduce them.
Choose a bath sheet if you want maximum body coverage and have enough hanging, washing, and drying capacity. Choose a standard towel if you are shorter, buying for children, have a small washer, lack a dryer, or want a towel that dries quickly. A larger towel is not automatically more luxurious in use: it also becomes heavier when wet, costs more, occupies more shelf space, and may remain damp longer.
Matouk Milagro demonstrates the importance of checking measurements after laundering. In the older Real Simple testing, it went from 30 by 60 inches to 28 by 57 inches. That is still a large towel, but the difference can affect whether it wraps comfortably around an adult.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare towel prices fairly
Prices change too quickly to reuse the older Italic price of $52 for two as a 2026 figure. When checking a product, record the price and date, then calculate:
- Price per bath towel, not just price per package.
- Price per usable body-drying towel when a set includes hand towels, washcloths, or a bath mat.
- Whether the displayed amount is a sale price, membership price, or regular price.
- Shipping, monogramming, and return-policy costs.
- Whether the current product page lists the same fiber blend, dimensions, GSM, and weave as the tested version.
A six-piece set is not automatically a better value than a two-pack. It may contain fewer bath towels, and a cheaper towel can become expensive if it shrinks, frays, sheds heavily, or must be replaced sooner.
What happens after washing?
First-touch softness is a poor standalone buying test. Finishing treatments can make a new towel feel exceptionally soft, while detergent residue, excess softener, or repeated heat can later reduce absorbency and alter the texture.
The older Real Simple material provides useful examples of post-wash trade-offs:
- Italic Serene Ultraplush: retained softness in the reported testing and dried in 90 minutes under the stated conditions.
- Lands’ End Premium Supima: maintained strong softness and absorbency-related performance, but testers noted shrinkage.
- Brooklinen Organic Ribbed: showed good absorbency and stain resistance but substantial shrinkage and later fraying under the test conditions.
- Mara Organic Waffle: showed low shrinkage and quick drying, though its texture was less traditionally plush.
- Matouk Milagro: remained oversized but shrank measurably, from 30 by 60 inches to 28 by 57 inches.
For other products, the independent guides report repeated laundering and durability testing, but the exact shrinkage, lint, odor, and post-wash measurements are not interchangeable between publications. Good Housekeeping used 20 wash cycles, while Real Simple’s older at-home protocol used hot water and high heat. Always read a result alongside its test conditions.

Care that preserves absorbency and reduces odor
Most bath towels can be used about three to four times before washing when they dry fully between uses. A separate Real Simple care article syndicated in February 2026 gives a broader three-to-five-use range and recommends washing on a cold cycle, avoiding repeated high heat, separating towels from clothing, avoiding an overloaded washer, moderating detergent, and skipping routine fabric softener and dryer sheets.
Best Value
- Hotel Collection - 8-Piece bathroom towel set contains 2 bathroom towels (27 x 54 inches), 2 hand towels (16 x 30 inches), and 4 washcloths (13 x 13 inches); Each towel is spun from 100% turkish cotton - durable, quick-dry, and wonderfully absorbent
- Wrap Into Blissful Luxury - At the end of a long day, or at the start of a new one, you deserve a little luxury; Transform your bathroom into a mini spa with the help of White Classic deliciously soft, comfy elegant bath towels set

- Highly Absorbent, Fast Drying, No Lint - Our plush towels and washcloths sets, made from top-grade turkish cotton, boast exceptional absorbency and quick-drying features, complemented by a lint-free experience
- Easy Maintenance - These cotton towels for bathroom are hassle-free to maintain – simply machine wash them; They fluff up nicely and become even softer after the first wash, with minimal lint release that does not affect their aesthetics, functionality
That is practical guidance, not a universal hygiene rule. Wash sooner if a towel remains damp, smells sour, is used during illness, touches pets, or is shared by people with particular skin or health concerns.
- Hang the towel fully open. Do not bunch it on the floor or fold it over a narrow hook. Trapped moisture slows drying and can contribute to musty or mildew odors. This risk is also described in Real Simple’s syndicated towel-hanging guidance.
- Give the towel airflow. Use a wide bar, heated rail, fan, or bathroom ventilation where available.
- Do not overload the washer. Dense towels need room to move and rinse properly.
- Use moderate detergent. Excess detergent can leave residue that makes fibers feel stiff and reduces absorbency.
- Be cautious with softener and dryer sheets. They can coat fibers and reduce water absorption. Follow the towel manufacturer’s care instructions if they differ.
- Dry completely before storage. Never put a damp towel in a hamper or linen closet.
Hard water, mineral deposits, hair products, makeup, self-tanner, and acne treatments can also affect towel feel or color. White towels are easier to brighten or bleach, but bleach can damage fibers when overused. Do not treat vinegar as a guaranteed repair; the product’s care label and local water conditions should guide any special treatment.
How long should a bath towel last?
A Real Simple syndicated care article attributes an estimate of about two years for a typical towel cared for properly to a Weezie executive. That is an attributed rule of thumb, not a service-life guarantee. Heavy household use can shorten it, while a mostly decorative towel may last longer.

A practical decision guide
- Want the latest Real Simple answer? Verify the live article’s exact winner, update date, product version, current price, and set contents. Do not assume that the June 2024 Italic selection remains the 2026 winner.
- Want a heavy hotel-style feel? Compare the current Real Simple plush pick with Frontgate Resort Collection, Brooklinen Super-Plush, or Matouk Milagro. Expect longer drying times and greater wet weight.
- Hate damp or musty towels? Choose a waffle, lattice, ribbed, or lower-GSM towel, such as Onsen Supima Waffle among the current independent recommendations.
- Need to replace towels for a whole household? Compare price per bath towel, low shrinkage, durable hems, color availability, lint, and drying speed. A replenishable value set matters more than a luxurious first touch.
- Want maximum coverage? Consider Quince Turkish Ultra Luxe Plush Bath Sheet or another verified bath sheet, but confirm dimensions, washer capacity, and drying space.
- Want organic materials or supply-chain credentials? Verify the exact certification—GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, or OEKO-TEX Made in Green—and judge it separately from softness and absorbency.
- Want a design-forward or monogrammable towel? The older Real Simple material highlighted RH Ultra-Soft Turkish Towel for oversized coverage and monogramming, but current model details, certification, and pricing require verification.
- Have sensitive skin? Choose a smooth, soft surface, wash with fragrance-free detergent, and consider a finished-product certification such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 without calling it medically hypoallergenic.
Bottom line
The most recently confirmed Real Simple best-overall towel is the Italic Serene Ultraplush Australian Cotton Bath Towel, but its recommendation and $52-for-two price belong to June 2024, not verified 2026 coverage. The current Real Simple page should decide the 2026 answer once its exact lineup is confirmed.
For a purchase decision independent of that unresolved lineup, Frontgate is a strong plush, hotel-style contender backed by Forbes Vetted and Wirecutter, Onsen Supima Waffle is the better direction for quick drying, and Quince’s Turkish Ultra Luxe Plush Bath Sheet is the leading large-size option identified by Forbes Vetted. Choose based on how quickly your bathroom can dry a towel—not simply on which one feels softest in the package.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Italic Serene Ultraplush still Real Simple’s best bath towel in 2026?
It is the most recently confirmed Real Simple overall pick in the available evidence, appearing in June 2024 coverage. Publicly indexed 2026 references do not reliably confirm that it remains the current winner, so check the live Real Simple article before treating it as a 2026 recommendation.
Is a higher GSM bath towel better?
Not necessarily. Higher GSM usually means a denser, heavier, plusher towel that may absorb more but dry more slowly. Lower-GSM waffle, lattice, and ribbed towels can be more practical in humid bathrooms, homes without dryers, gyms, and large households.
How often should bath towels be washed?
A practical range is every three to five uses when the towel dries completely between uses. Wash sooner if it stays damp, develops an odor, is shared during illness, or is used in a humid, poorly ventilated bathroom.
Are bath sheets better than bath towels?
Bath sheets provide more coverage but cost more, weigh more when wet, take longer to dry, and need more washer and storage space. Standard bath towels are often more practical for children, shorter adults, small bathrooms, and homes without dryers.
Does OEKO-TEX mean a towel is organic or chemical-free?
No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests finished textiles for harmful substances within its defined scope. It does not mean a towel is organic, chemical-free in every sense, or automatically more absorbent. GOTS addresses organic textile requirements across the supply chain, while OEKO-TEX Made in Green adds traceability and production requirements.
The Bottom Line
Best advice: Treat Real Simple’s current live page as the authority for its 2026 lineup, but choose your own winner by matching construction and weight to your drying conditions. Dense terry maximizes plushness; waffle, lattice, and lighter ribbed towels maximize practicality. Then compare post-wash behavior, size after shrinkage, certification scope, and price per bath towel—not just the softness or package price on day one.
